During the design process it grew to having a living space above the studio, which grew to having a small house attached to the studio forming a compound. At this point it became clear to the client; the project was outgrowing the neighborhood. After re-evaluating the project, the live / work compound is currently sited in a natural protected nest with post card views of Mount Sopris & the Roaring Fork Valley. The courtyard compound consist of the central south facing piece being the studio flanked by a simple 2500 sq ft 2 bedroom, 2 story house one the west side, and a multi purpose guest wing /studio on the east side. The evolution of this compound came to include the desire to have the building blend into the surrounding landscape, and at the same time become the backdrop to create and display his sculpture.

MLB Design Group"I want a big island that everybody can gather around," said the client, and that was an important driver for our design development work. The homeowners love to cook and entertain, and often are joined by their two teenage daughters for also enjoy cooking and socializing in this important room.
After considering other options, we decided the best design solution was to add space to the kitchen. Basically we added the "missing corner" to the existing L-shaped space to create the room you see. The doorway to the dining room was enlarged - and the hardwoods extended and refinished - to tie these rooms together visually and functionally. Now guests and family can be in the dining room, but still part of the kitchen activities. A new folding glass door at the dining room leads out to the deck, so now it's possible to easily circulate from kitchen to deck to dining.
The beam is wrapped in a custom-stained rustic wood meant to blend with the darker cabinet finish. (This beam shows up in the BEFORE picture as a painted thing.) In our renovation, we decided to play up the strong horizontal line of this beam -- we extended that element around the space by adding "non-structural boards" at the top of the surrounding walls. You'll see other "posts and beams" in other views of this room.

A colleague of ours spent part of his winter months searching for cedar logs with a matching curve, radius and diameter to meet the specifications for this entry way.
