My client wanted a new entry way that matched the existing Spanish architecture of the house. We were able to design these beautifully curved stairs with a flagstone path that matched the warm hues of the existing tiles and added decorative tiles that picked up and complimented the flowering plants. All the plants in this garden were California Native only as this was a prerequisite of my wonderful client.

The project involved substantial alterations and additions to an existing Split Level style residence. The additions included an inviting Front Portico, sizeable Kitchen, Great Room, and rear Porch on the main floor, and a Master Suite on the upper level. As part of the renovation the Entrance Hall was made into an two-storey space, and various rooms were reconfigured on the main floor to create a Study Room for the family’s two sons, a large Walk-in Pantry, and a Mud Room.
Important prerequisites established by the Clients were that we design comfortable, livable rooms, avoid superfluous spaces, and make sure that the Great Room was filled with natural light. Finally, a cozy Porch to enjoy “cafecitos” and “la tertulia” were a must. The construction was completed in nine months, and the project is a success by every metric of the Clients’ goals for their home transformation.

As an additional prerequisite for the design team, the homeowners wanted to create an outdoor kitchen that would not necessitate a ventilation hood over the grills as would be needed if the roof structure were fabricated from wood. This made the all-aluminum R-Shade the ideal solution. The design team went a step further, integrating a ceiling fan beam into the R-Blade. With the addition of a pergola fan, the homeowners could increase the cooling airflow on hot and humid days, or ramp up the fan when grilling for friends and family. To ensure the outdoor space was well lit for evening entertaining, integrated LED strip lights were incorporated into the pergola roof as well.
