Find the right local pro for your project

The owners requested a Private Resort that catered to their love for entertaining friends and family, a place where 2 people would feel just as comfortable as 42. Located on the western edge of a Wisconsin lake, the site provides a range of natural ecosystems from forest to prairie to water, allowing the building to have a more complex relationship with the lake - not merely creating large unencumbered views in that direction. The gently sloping site to the lake is atypical in many ways to most lakeside lots - as its main trajectory is not directly to the lake views - allowing for focus to be pushed in other directions such as a courtyard and into a nearby forest.
The biggest challenge was accommodating the large scale gathering spaces, while not overwhelming the natural setting with a single massive structure. Our solution was found in breaking down the scale of the project into digestible pieces and organizing them in a Camp-like collection of elements:
- Main Lodge: Providing the proper entry to the Camp and a Mess Hall
- Bunk House: A communal sleeping area and social space.
- Party Barn: An entertainment facility that opens directly on to a swimming pool & outdoor room.
- Guest Cottages: A series of smaller guest quarters.
- Private Quarters: The owners private space that directly links to the Main Lodge.
These elements are joined by a series green roof connectors, that merge with the landscape and allow the out buildings to retain their own identity. This Camp feel was further magnified through the materiality - specifically the use of Doug Fir, creating a modern Northwoods setting that is warm and inviting. The use of local limestone and poured concrete walls ground the buildings to the sloping site and serve as a cradle for the wood volumes that rest gently on them. The connections between these materials provided an opportunity to add a delicate reading to the spaces and re-enforce the camp aesthetic.
The oscillation between large communal spaces and private, intimate zones is explored on the interior and in the outdoor rooms. From the large courtyard to the private balcony - accommodating a variety of opportunities to engage the landscape was at the heart of the concept.

This was a large job with many challenges. The space was large and the items in it are as well. The space is used for private parties and has all the accomodations any group would ever need. We created nearly 200 square feet of countertops in a black wash stain with areas of exposed aggregate. The curved lower bartop is over 21 feet long with an apron front farm sink and 2 ice basins to keep beverages cool. The back bar holds the double tap for the drafts. The galley kitchen consists of over 10 linear feet of top with a cook top and a 10 foot long counter with an oversized farm sink with an apron front and drain boards flanking either side. The drainboards are designed to hold cutting boards for extra work space. We also created a 22 foot long curved fireplace hearth that matches the counters, tying the pieces together and adding additional seating during large gatherings.
Everyone’s favorite pieces are the two vanity sinks. These sinks were cast into live edge walnut vanity tops. The shape of the sinks follow the grain of the wood creating a natural flow. We hand formed the sink molds to be as organic as the wood they sat in. The most interesting of the sinks is the vanity that contains a knot. We couldn’t bring ourselves to eliminate the beautiful knot, so we created the sink to drop underneath it. If you were to peer into the knot you will see all of the water disappear into the drain.
This job had challenges of an extremely tight deadline, the creation of 6 custom sinks, the large pieces, intricate shapes and the installation in and around the custom woodwork and large wooden posts. Definitely a one of a kind project!

Design of a 90' x 200' steel framed arena and six stall barn for a private party. The arena was designed with open arched side walls, stucco siding, and a composition roof.

A 6,000 square foot 2-story new home complex in Milpitas was designed to facilitate the owners’ large business parties and gatherings, to have rooms for the kids to come back to upstairs, and a ground floor master suite with a huge walk-in closet. Several separate structures make up the dwelling: The main house, 3-car garage with carport for overflow parking, and a separate entertainment and recreation building separated by a courtyard from the main house.
The business activities include gatherings in the hundreds of people, so parking was maximized and guests can flow in through a separate gate to party in the courtyard and recreation building. Inside this structure is a wet bar, billiard room, workout gym and home theater. The main house ground floor has formal and informal living rooms, open kitchen and master suite with views and expansive windows in every direction. The house is sited on the crestline of a hill with views of the San Francisco Bay and private golf course below. The indoor-outdoor aspect of the house is further accentuated with outside living and dining areas.
High ceilings and expansive glass walls dissolve the sense of enclosure taking advantage of the site’s openness and privacy. The owner’s suite is downstairs in anticipation of aging-in-place, and upstairs there are three bedrooms and four bathrooms plus a sitting area lounge and casual TV loft area.
The house sits on one acre at the top of a low hill range overlooking Milpitas. The city was very cognizant of the importance of keeping a low profile at this crestline and required extensive story poles and photo evidence of the proper height and siting so as not to be seen from certain selected vantage points.

Before the front doors of the house, a soft and beautiful planter of carefully selected, low-growing annuals and perennials marks the edge to the tile carpet in front of the door. A clean, modern fountain adds the water element at the planter's center.
