Home to a young family of four, this new house blends in the tightly woven fabric of this traditional residential neighborhood. Yet CYAN Horticulture was mandated to pack in this limited space an ambitious program of children-minded activities, in a ‘warm contemporary’ way. The front yard hence accommodates a boxwood parterre/soccer field and a secret dirtbike track, a rain barrel as well as mixed monochromatic plantings in greens and whites.

Staircase - transitional staircase idea in Philadelphia

When this homeowner’s neighbor removed two, two- story-high Ficus trees, her side-yard became baron and sunbaked. Concrete covers virtually the whole area from the house to the property line, but because the side-yard has a lot of foot traffic and serves as a sitting area to the basement apartment, the owner did not want to remove any of the concrete. The solution was to put up fencing to block the view of the neighbor’s house, then upcycle wine barrels and 55-gallon drums into huge planters. The drums are large enough to accommodate a full-sized tree and provide the added advantage of giving height to smaller trees to provide further screening of the neighbor’s house. Everything was painted in bright colors to give the space a cheery Caribbean feel. The neighbor’s tree removal ended up as a blessing in disguise, because what had been a drab trough-way was transformed into a happy patio.

Lighting became another way to integrate simplicity and harmony to the home’s overall design; but like every other element of our project, modernity and time honored practices of craftsmanship needed to fuse. In the master suite, fabricating the light troughs proved to be an interesting challenge. Given the extreme length of the faces and bottoms of the light trough (after 15), using solid cherry for their construction was impractical. A thin birch plywood substrate was built and 1/8" thick cherry veneers were applied. The resulting material was used for the faces and bottoms of the trough. The resultant birch/cherry composite material was reinforced with an elaborate lamination process that included a thin fiberglass veil for strength and flexibility. Other lighting was chosen to wash light over surfaces or to hang—lantern style to provide soft light and aesthetic embellishment. Here again, the design is highly influenced by the Japanese aesthetic.

JAC 140 - Twilight in Space by Jon Allen The Jon Allen Collection is an exclusive, hand-selected group of my most personal work to date. Each piece is hand-painted on aluminum. My art itself and my chosen medium, aluminum, are blissfully married. You may not think of the word organic when you hear the word metal, but this is some of my most organic art and that’s simply because metal allows my work to achieve true sentience. Aluminum’s naturally reflective nature enables each color, shape, and stroke to reach its full potential. A new aspect of the painting will reveal itself to you as it basks in the light that surrounds, evades, or envelops it in that moment. When you see the piece from different angles, you will appreciate how vibrant, dynamic, and environmentally influenced these pieces are. What you may see and feel by morning is not what you’ll see or feel by dusk and in many ways, and as such I feel these pieces capture the ever-ebbing and complex nature of human emotion and perception. Some of these pieces are truly abstract while others are modern takes on traditional landscapes, marine life, and portraits. I hope you enjoy them a fraction of how much I enjoyed creating them. A&E Construction. Our Pennington NJ client had recently moved into this home and was dissatisfied with the way the kitchen functioned. As it was before, the kitchen was closed off from the rest of the home with the single entrance being on the far end of the main first-floor hallway, next to the door to the garage. A&E Construction developed a design for her kitchen remodel that both creates a better flow between the kitchen and the rest of the house, and also offers a better option for eating/work space.
