Designed to maximize function with minimal impact, the studio serves up adaptable square footage in a wrapping almost healthy enough to eat.
The open interior space organically transitions from personal to communal with the guidance of an angled roof plane. Beneath the tallest elevation, a sunny workspace awaits creative endeavors. The high ceiling provides room for big ideas in a small space, while a cluster of windows offers a glimpse of the structure’s soaring eave. Solid walls hugging the workspace add both privacy and anchors for wall-mounted storage. Towards the studio’s southern end, the ceiling plane slopes downward into a more intimate gathering space with playfully angled lines.
The building is as sustainable as it is versatile. Its all-wood construction includes interior paneling sourced locally from the Wood Mill of Maine. Lengths of eastern white pine span up to 16 feet to reach from floor to ceiling, creating visual warmth from a material that doubles as a natural insulator. Non-toxic wood fiber insulation, made from sawdust and wax, partners with triple-glazed windows to further insulate against extreme weather. During the winter, the interior temperature is able to reach 70 degrees without any heat on.
As it neared completion, the studio became a family project with Jesse, Betsy, and their kids working together to add the finishing touches. “Our whole life is a bit of an architectural experiment”, says Jesse, “but this has become an incredibly useful space.”

Modern Style your living room or bedroom into an exquisite retreat with the perfect area rug, an essential element that combines both style and practicality. A thoughtfully selected rug not only anchors the space but also infuses it with warmth, texture, and personality. Whether you're enhancing a cozy bedroom or designing a spacious living area, choosing the right rug is crucial to creating a harmonious and inviting environment.
The design of your area rug can profoundly influence the overall ambiance of your room. For a touch of opulence, consider hand-tufted or hand-knotted rugs, which are renowned for their intricate patterns and luxurious textures. These rugs, crafted with meticulous attention to detail, make a sophisticated statement in any setting. If a contemporary aesthetic appeals to you, machine-woven rugs are an excellent choice. They are available in an array of vibrant patterns and hues and are engineered to endure high foot traffic with their durable heat-set fibers. For a versatile and classic option, flat-woven rugs, such as kilims, offer a reversible design that seamlessly integrates with both modern and traditional decor.
When selecting a rug, the choice of material significantly impacts both its look and feel. Shag and flokati rugs are ideal for creating a sumptuous, inviting atmosphere. Their long, soft fibers provide unparalleled comfort underfoot, enhancing the coziness of your living room or bedroom. Hand-loomed rugs deliver unique textures and artisanal craftsmanship, while braided and hand-hooked rugs bring a delightful, handcrafted charm. For ease of maintenance, machine washable rugs are highly practical. They allow for effortless cleaning and help maintain a pristine appearance with minimal effort.
In addition to aesthetics, the functionality of your rug is paramount. Stain-resistant and water-resistant rugs are perfect for managing spills and everyday wear, ensuring your rug remains pristine over time. Non-slip and adhesive backings are crucial for safety, particularly on hardwood floors, preventing any risk of slipping and ensuring the rug stays securely in place. Furthermore, cushioned rugs enhance comfort, making your space not only stylish but also extraordinarily comfortable.
Personalize your space with bespoke or custom rug options. An 8x10 area rug is ideal for covering substantial areas and can be customized to fit specific dimensions or design preferences. Custom features, such as elegant fringe details or organic textures, allow you to craft a rug that reflects your unique style and complements your existing decor.
The selection of the top 15 area rugs available today encompasses a wide range of styles and features to meet diverse needs. From distressed designs that impart character to sleek contemporary patterns that offer a modern touch, there is a rug to suit every taste. Large rugs for living rooms and bedrooms can define and unify the space, while oversized carpets can create a dramatic focal point. Consider the practical aspects of each rug to ensure it not only enhances your decor but also withstands the rigors of daily use.
Ultimately, selecting the ideal area rug involves a delicate balance between aesthetic appeal and functional utility. Whether you opt for a luxurious hand-tufted piece, a resilient machine-woven design, or a versatile flat-woven style, the right rug will elevate your living space into a stylish and comfortable haven. By exploring a variety of options and carefully considering both design and practicality, you can find the perfect rug to transform your room into a beautifully appointed retreat.

Step into the primary suite of my beloved home, The French Chateau. Designing bedrooms is always a very personal endeavor, and designing our own bedroom was no exception. The space must serve as a sanctuary, providing solace at the end of each day, while also uplifting and inspiring us each morning. However, the task always becomes more complex when we are designing a primary suite for two individuals who may not always share the same vision or aesthetic preferences; my husband and I are no different.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In crafting this space, I desired a room that would bring a smile to our faces whether we were entering or leaving. It needed to encompass beauty that resonated with my love for French, feminine design while also providing comfort for my husband, who has a preference for a richer, more masculine palette.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The design of this primary suite revolves around neutral colors, with a touch of blue—a hue that both of us appreciate—as an accent color. The indulgence of luxurious linens eagerly welcomes us, creating an anticipation for rest after long and bustling days. Throughout the room, you'll notice various cherished family photos adorning our dressers, capturing precious memories. Additionally, a captivating original painting graces a sidewall, showcasing our favorite place, the Jardin des Tuileries at the Louvre in Paris. These personal touches imbue the space with a profound sense of home, rejuvenating our souls and infusing the atmosphere with a unique warmth.

The shaker doors add to the modern design and the space allows for closed long term storage up above each locker for seasonal items like swim gear, gloves and scarves.

Large stone landings and landscape boulders create a much more natural feeling landscape. Large Arctic Willows , blankets of Sweet Woodruff, and clusters of various Hosta species soften the edges.

A current interior design trend is the use of floor-to-ceiling color saturation, where paint colors envelop an entire space. When designing the primary en-suite bathroom for my personal residence, "The French Chateau," I wanted to explore this trend. Selecting Sherwin Williams' "Sleepy Blue" as the paint color, we adorned the bathroom from base to crown, creating a spa-like ambiance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I embarked on the journey of selecting art and accentuating the space, I found it challenging to source art that would infuse the ideal color scheme and fit the space perfectly. I decided that commissioning a custom piece would be the best solution. Eventually I realized that I, myself, was the ideal artist. Being an art major in college and passionate about all forms of creativity, the notion of crafting such an intimate piece for a personal space felt right.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I began painting this piece, drawing inspiration from my own story. The artwork encompasses multiple layers, mirroring the chapters of my journey. The initial layer exudes sweetness and simplicity, reflecting the innocence of childhood. Subsequent layers illustrate warm and joyful tones, symbolizing adolescence and falling in love. As the story unfolds, layers of hurt and pain emerge, portraying challenging times, lost friendships, infertility, the closure of my cherished boutique in 2016, and other profound moments in my life. Each stroke captures both gentleness and intensity, blending seamlessly or resonating with emotional fervor.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Finally, I adorned the painting with gold leaf, not only adding beauty but also symbolizing my own refinement through the fires of life. Every time I step into my bathroom, I am greeted by my own creation, which serves as a reminder of the beauty, both sweet and painful, that weaves through my story. It fills me with anticipation for the future too.
