Step into the primary suite of my beloved home, The French Chateau. Designing bedrooms is always a very personal endeavor, and designing our own bedroom was no exception. The space must serve as a sanctuary, providing solace at the end of each day, while also uplifting and inspiring us each morning. However, the task always becomes more complex when we are designing a primary suite for two individuals who may not always share the same vision or aesthetic preferences; my husband and I are no different.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In crafting this space, I desired a room that would bring a smile to our faces whether we were entering or leaving. It needed to encompass beauty that resonated with my love for French, feminine design while also providing comfort for my husband, who has a preference for a richer, more masculine palette.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The design of this primary suite revolves around neutral colors, with a touch of blue—a hue that both of us appreciate—as an accent color. The indulgence of luxurious linens eagerly welcomes us, creating an anticipation for rest after long and bustling days. Throughout the room, you'll notice various cherished family photos adorning our dressers, capturing precious memories. Additionally, a captivating original painting graces a sidewall, showcasing our favorite place, the Jardin des Tuileries at the Louvre in Paris. These personal touches imbue the space with a profound sense of home, rejuvenating our souls and infusing the atmosphere with a unique warmth.

The Mazama Cabin is located at the end of a beautiful meadow in the Methow Valley, on the east slope of the North Cascades Mountains in Washington state. The 1500 SF cabin is a superb place for a weekend get-a-way, with a garage below and compact living space above. The roof is “lifted” by a continuous band of clerestory windows, and the upstairs living space has a large glass wall facing a beautiful view of the mountain face known locally as Goat Wall. The project is characterized by sustainable cedar siding and
recycled metal roofing; the walls and roof have 40% higher insulation values than typical construction.
The cabin will become a guest house when the main house is completed in late 2012.

In the realm of luxury interior design, the layout and placement of furniture are as important as the pieces themselves. How we arrange our furniture within a living room not only dictates the flow and functionality of the space but also significantly influences its aesthetic and emotional impact. In this article, Krish Kothari delves into insights of how the arrangement of furniture is akin to composing a symphony, further discussing that every piece must work in harmony with the next to create an environment that exudes both elegance and comfort.
The Philosophy of Furniture Placement
At its core, furniture placement is about balance—striking the perfect equilibrium between form and function. In luxury interiors, this requires a considered approach where each piece of furniture serves both a practical and aesthetic purpose. "A well-placed chair or sofa can transform the way a room feels," Krish explains. "It’s not just about where furniture goes, it’s about how it interacts with the architecture, the light, and the people who use the space."
Luxury living rooms are often grand and spacious, but with such expansiveness comes the challenge of creating intimacy without sacrificing elegance. This is where thoughtful furniture placement comes into play. By organising the room in zones—whether for conversation, relaxation, or entertainment—one can create a dynamic space that feels inviting yet refined.
Creating Flow Through Placement
One of the most important principles of furniture placement is creating a natural flow. In a luxury living room, the arrangement should guide movement effortlessly, ensuring that the space feels open and accessible. Krish emphasises the importance of this flow, stating, "Furniture should never obstruct movement; it should invite you into the space, guiding you seamlessly from one area to the next."
The placement of larger furniture items, such as sofas and armchairs, should be oriented in a way that encourages interaction without compromising the overall balance of the room. For example, arranging seating around a central focal point—whether it’s a fireplace, a piece of art, or a panoramic view—creates a sense of coherence and invites conversation. At the same time, leaving enough space between furniture ensures that the room feels airy and uncluttered, a key element in luxury design.
Defining Zones for Living
In large living rooms, furniture placement can be used to define different functional zones within the same space. By thoughtfully arranging seating, tables, and accessories, designers can create distinct areas for lounging, socialising, and even working, without the need for physical partitions. Krish often approaches luxury living rooms as multi-functional spaces, where zoning through furniture allows for different activities to coexist in harmony.
For example, a seating area arranged around a coffee table may serve as the social heart of the room, perfect for entertaining guests, while a pair of armchairs positioned by a window could create a quiet nook for reading or reflection. The key is to ensure that each zone feels connected yet distinct, maintaining a flow that is both functional and visually appealing.
Achieving Balance Through Symmetry and Asymmetry
Balance is a fundamental aspect of luxury design, and furniture placement plays a pivotal role in achieving this balance. While symmetry can lend a sense of order and formality, asymmetry often adds interest and dynamism to a space. Krish notes, "It’s about finding the right balance between harmony and contrast, where the placement of each piece contributes to the overall rhythm of the room."
In formal living rooms, symmetrical arrangements—such as placing matching sofas or armchairs on either side of a central coffee table—can create a sense of grandeur and refinement. On the other hand, asymmetrical layouts, such as an off-centre arrangement of furniture or the strategic use of statement pieces, can inject a modern, relaxed feel into the space, adding depth and intrigue.
Layering with Accessories
While furniture forms the foundation of a luxury living room, the careful layering of accessories—such as rugs, lighting, and artwork—adds the finishing touch to a well-curated space. Rugs, in particular, play a critical role in anchoring furniture and creating visual zones within the room. "A rug should never feel like an afterthought," Krish suggests. "It should be chosen with the same care as the furniture itself, both in terms of texture and scale."
Lighting, too, plays a crucial role in enhancing the arrangement of furniture. By using a combination of overhead lighting, floor lamps, and accent lights, designers can create depth and highlight key areas of the room. A well-placed floor lamp beside an armchair not only serves a functional purpose but also adds to the room's aesthetic by introducing layers of light and shadow.
Comfort as a Key Element
Above all, furniture placement in a luxury living room must prioritise comfort. While aesthetic appeal is essential, the space must also be inviting and livable. "Luxury is about creating a space that not only looks beautiful but feels comfortable," Krish explains. The positioning of furniture should foster an environment where people can relax, engage, and feel at ease.
Comfort is achieved not just through the selection of plush, high-quality furniture but also through the thoughtful placement of each piece. Sofas should be positioned to take advantage of natural light, chairs should be placed at convenient distances from tables, and all seating arrangements should encourage conversation and interaction.
The Future of Furniture Placement in Luxury Design
As living spaces continue to evolve, so too does the approach to furniture placement. The future of luxury interiors will likely see a greater emphasis on flexibility and adaptability, where furniture can be easily rearranged to suit different occasions or changing lifestyles. Modular furniture, for instance, is gaining popularity in luxury homes, offering the ability to reconfigure seating arrangements to meet the needs of the moment.
Ultimately, the art of furniture placement is about more than just positioning pieces within a room—it is about creating a living environment that balances style, comfort, and functionality. By approaching furniture placement as an integral part of the design process, we can craft luxury living rooms that are not only visually striking but also deeply personal and profoundly comfortable.

Designed to maximize function with minimal impact, the studio serves up adaptable square footage in a wrapping almost healthy enough to eat.
The open interior space organically transitions from personal to communal with the guidance of an angled roof plane. Beneath the tallest elevation, a sunny workspace awaits creative endeavors. The high ceiling provides room for big ideas in a small space, while a cluster of windows offers a glimpse of the structure’s soaring eave. Solid walls hugging the workspace add both privacy and anchors for wall-mounted storage. Towards the studio’s southern end, the ceiling plane slopes downward into a more intimate gathering space with playfully angled lines.
The building is as sustainable as it is versatile. Its all-wood construction includes interior paneling sourced locally from the Wood Mill of Maine. Lengths of eastern white pine span up to 16 feet to reach from floor to ceiling, creating visual warmth from a material that doubles as a natural insulator. Non-toxic wood fiber insulation, made from sawdust and wax, partners with triple-glazed windows to further insulate against extreme weather. During the winter, the interior temperature is able to reach 70 degrees without any heat on.
As it neared completion, the studio became a family project with Jesse, Betsy, and their kids working together to add the finishing touches. “Our whole life is a bit of an architectural experiment”, says Jesse, “but this has become an incredibly useful space.”

An Ensuite Transformation in Richmond Hill
This project showcases how we helped a wonderful retired couple in Richmond Hill transform their dated and dysfunctional master ensuite into a tranquil spa-like retreat. These lovely empty nesters, in their mid to late 70s, envisioned a space where they could truly relax and enjoy their time at home, especially when their family and grandkids came to visit. We were so honored to help them bring that vision to life.
Understanding Their Needs:
From our initial conversations, it was clear how much this couple valued comfort and tranquility. The existing ensuite, unfortunately, fell short of providing either. For the wife, the leaky deck-mount tub was a major disappointment, as she deeply cherished her long, hot baths. The husband, meanwhile, was eager to replace the outdated and cumbersome toilet/bidet combo with a modern, single-piece smart toilet – a desire for both convenience and a touch of modern luxury. The shower stall was cramped, dark, and plagued by mold, while the large double vanity, despite its size, lacked functional storage. It simply wasn't the relaxing oasis they deserved.
Addressing Their Concerns:
We understood that undertaking a renovation can be stressful, especially when you're not going to be on-site for much of the process. This couple was understandably concerned about potential delays, workmanship quality, and the possibility of unforeseen issues arising while they were away. We made it our priority to address each of these concerns with transparency, open communication, and a commitment to delivering on our promises.
Our Personalized Solutions:
We worked closely with the couple to develop solutions that perfectly matched their needs and desires:
● A Sanctuary for Soaking: The leaky deck-mount tub was replaced with a beautiful, freestanding oval tub – easier to access and offering a more contemporary aesthetic. The wife's vision of a small decorative table nearby for her bath essentials added a personal touch, creating a true spa-like experience.
● Modern Comfort and Convenience: The separate toilet and bidet were replaced with a sleek, high-tech smart toilet, fulfilling the husband's wish and adding a touch of modern luxury to their daily routine.
● A Bright and Inviting Shower: The cramped and moldy shower stall was completely transformed. We demolished the existing bulkhead and built a custom walk-in shower with frameless glass, a built-in bench, and a niche for toiletries. The result was a dramatically brighter and more spacious shower experience.
● Storage and Style: A semi-custom double vanity with ample cabinets and drawers was installed, finally providing each of them with dedicated storage and eliminating
countertop clutter. This seemingly small change made a huge difference in their daily lives.
● A Calming Atmosphere: We carefully selected a calming spa-like color palette, incorporating muted, neutral tones and high-quality finishes to create a truly relaxing and inviting atmosphere.
Navigating the Challenges Together:
Renovations rarely go perfectly smoothly, and this project was no exception. We encountered delays with plumbing fixture deliveries, which threatened our timeline. However, by leveraging our established relationships with reliable suppliers, we were able to find alternative solutions
and minimize the impact on the project schedule. We also faced a minor setback when the initially chosen grey vanity went out of stock. Working closely with the couple, we explored other options and ultimately selected a stunning sandstone-stained maple finish, which, as it turned out, complemented the other design elements beautifully. These moments reinforced the importance of open communication and collaboration throughout the process.
The Joy of Transformation:
The final result was truly remarkable. The transformed ensuite is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and meticulous execution. The space now features large-format, light-colored concrete-look porcelain tiles, creating a bright and airy feel. The sandstone-stained maple vanity, topped with a quartz countertop, serves as a beautiful focal point against the muted green walls. Matte black plumbing fixtures, hardware, and accessories add a touch of modern sophistication. The custom frameless shower glass enclosure enhances the spaciousness of the shower, while the smart toilet provides the ultimate in comfort and convenience.
A Space to Cherish:
The renovation has made a profound difference in this couple's daily lives. The wife can now indulge in her beloved long, hot baths in a truly tranquil setting. The husband enjoys the modern convenience of his new smart toilet. The spacious and bright walk-in shower is both beautiful and functional. And the new vanity provides ample storage, keeping the countertop clutter-free and contributing to the overall sense of peace and calm. This ensuite is no longer just a bathroom; it's a personal spa, a sanctuary within their home, where they can relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy their time together.
Memorable Moments and Hiccups:
● Budget Adjustment: After finalizing the initial design, we worked closely with the clients to reselect the freestanding tub to ensure it aligned perfectly with their budget. ● Vanity Setback: The unexpected out-of-stock situation with the original vanity color required a quick and effective re-selection process, which ultimately led to an even better design outcome. This highlighted the importance of flexibility and collaboration during a renovation.

Warm shades, red bricks and floors covered in large antique teak boards typify the beguiling atmosphere of this Venetian villa, which vaunts an enviable location on the edge of a forest. Vast windows enable the property to benefit from views across the garden to the surrounding woodland, meaning that the rooms are bathed in the light and colors of the lush nature all round.
A masterful interpretation means that the house enjoys fluidity and openness between the various rooms, which intersect in a celebration of conviviality, fulfilling the owners’ wishes. The art-collecting house owners wanted to craft a home in which they could display international works of art, while enhancing their value. Every item reveals the personality of the proprietors.
As culinary connoisseurs, the owners also wanted to make the kitchen into the very heart of the home: a place in which to exhibit, live and shape. The result is an elegant, warm and welcoming kitchen that is profoundly connected with the rest of the home.
The single-block kitchen with a professional island by Officine Gullo is an invitation to partake. Providing plenty of room for the “chef”, the kitchen encourages socializing, while allowing the person who’s cooking to chat with others in the surrounding spaces.
The Officine Gullo made-to-measure island kitchen stands almost 4 meters long with ample space and a plethora of cooking methods provided by the professional elements taken straight from top restaurant kitchens, such as the smooth fry top, cooktop
with 4 burners, central coup de feu, ceramic glass electric plate and electric pasta cooker, as well as generous steel worktops for food preparation. The lower section contains the spacious multifunction fan oven made entirely in stainless steel, food warmer, and several compartments and drawers. The steel washbasin with faucets and integrated hood complete the island.
The structure is manufactured in steel sheets measuring up to 3mm thick, powder-coated in Pearl Beige, and finished with the
finest solid brass and brushed nickel details.
This kitchen is not only a place where meals are made. It’s also a multifunctional place where friends and family gather to spend quality time together, where the workspace is accessorized to the highest standard and remains open to the rest of the house.

A Monument to Time | Trullo Vacation Villa in Southern Italy
In the Valle d'Itria, located in the Puglia region of southern Italy, lies a distinctive form of vernacular architecture — the Trullo. These conical-roofed structures, constructed from limestone, have become emblematic of the region. The walls are traditionally coated with white lime, while the roofs are formed by stacking limestone tiles in a conical shape, often adorned with religious symbols or motifs, and topped with various stone ornaments. The oldest surviving Trullo can be traced back to the 16th century.
When the Franco family approached us to design a summer retreat, the existing three weathered Trulli on the site immediately captured our attention — these very structures were the reason the family chose this location. Surrounded by olive groves and imbued with the southern Italian charm, the site not only offered historical significance but also a deep connection to the land. The brief was clear: restore and renovate these ancient conical buildings, adding extensions and a pool, to create a vacation experience that merges history with modernity. This is part of a broader resurgence in the Puglia region, where ancient structures are being revitalized with a fresh perspective.
When designing residential spaces, we usually let the spirit of the owner guide the design. In this case, however, the building itself already carries a rich historical essence. The stone, having weathered over millennia, carries its own stories, and thus the "soul" of the building is profoundly rich. The Franco family, with their dynamic and colorful personalities, presents another layer of complexity. The family, originally from southern Italy, lives and works in Milan. The mother is a renowned marketing professor at a business school, the father works in fashion, and their two sons work in the creative and financial sectors in various European countries. Every summer, the family returns to Puglia for a vacation. The challenge here was balancing the strong personalities of the owners with the equally strong soul of the historic building—an approach distinct from other typical vacation homes.
Before starting the design, we conducted extensive research into the history and the development of the Trullo, the existing buildings, and the materials used, hoping to draw inspiration from the structure itself and the surrounding environment. The three Trullo buildings’ exact age is untraceable, but we speculate they were built around four to five hundred years ago based on their architectural state and regional context. Adjacent to the Trullo structures is a square-shaped building, an extension from about a century ago. Based on its architectural style, it was likely a former farm tool shed, and the gap of several centuries between the original Trullo and the expansion is thought-provoking, raising the question of how the buildings evolved over time.
From the conical Trullo to the expanded stone house, the construction techniques changed over the centuries. The stones used in the Trullo are smaller, whereas the stones in the expanded building are larger and more intact. We approached this as a timeline and aimed to preserve the textures of the different materials to tell the story of time. On the side of the expanded stone house, we extended the design with two additional volumes, using modern cutting techniques that resulted in a neat façade. This created another new timeline, juxtaposing the old and new architectural forms.
The stones from different historical periods are arranged from left to right, in order from old to new. As time passes, the new stones will also develop their unique textures, reflecting the marks of time. Ultimately, this lightweight design approach achieves a dynamic balance between restoration and expansion. By creating a gradient of time, it showcases the architectural layering and temporal essence, symbolizing the continuation of family bonds and the integration of heritage with innovation in historical architecture.
The main entrance of the vacation home lies within the extension, and the design opens into a living area and modern bathrooms. The Franco family's lifestyle revolves around this central area, which connects the past on the left and the present on the right. To increase natural light, we enlarged the small window openings in the thick stone walls and replaced them with large square windows, flooding the interior with natural light. The built-in sofa, designed to blend seamlessly with the architectural space, creates a subtle transition between the traditional and the modern. We believe that the renovation of historical buildings should not simply preserve the status quo like a museum exhibit; instead, it should provide spaces that serve modern needs, allowing history to be reinterpreted and given new life.
The heart of the new space is the kitchen, a central gathering place for the family, particularly in southern Italy, where food is a critical connector. The kitchen features a custom concrete island that serves both as a countertop and a dining table. The stainless steel work surface by the window allows the cook to look out onto the olive groves, bringing a sense of serenity and connection to the outdoors. These custom pieces of furniture are designed to harmonize the old and the new, creating a seamless blend of the two. Large windows and sliding glass doors open onto the expansive views of the estate, offering a backdrop of rolling hills and olive trees, allowing the family to enjoy a poetic, tranquil experience as they gather for meals.
The master bedroom is located at the end of the new extension, with an entrance through an antique wooden door, adding a sense of nostalgia. The fixed furniture — including the bed and headboard — is traditionally built into the structure, and the room exudes a serene, minimalist atmosphere. The rooms for the sons, located in the oldest Trullo, each have their own distinct spaces, forming a cluster of small, cave-like rooms. We preserved as much of the original texture and character of the space as possible. In this five-hundred-year journey through time, we aimed to delicately enhance the historical details with minimal intervention. Light, perhaps the most ephemeral element, became our primary tool to highlight the space, with subtle lighting design that draws attention to the wooden beams, alcoves, and the natural undulations of the stone walls. The main lighting source comes from recessed spotlights that wash the ceiling with light, illuminating the room while emphasizing the unique atmosphere of the stone structure. Wall-mounted lamps in alcoves provide a gentle warmth, creating a cozy and intimate ambiance.
During the renovation, we faced significant challenges due to the nature of the Trullo as a traditional and iconic structure. Since the conical roofs had largely collapsed due to their age, we had to repair the damaged areas using original materials to maintain historical accuracy while fulfilling modern functional requirements. The traditional building method involves stacking limestone on a cylindrical base to form the conical roof, and the double-layered stone walls contain a layer of rubble for insulation. This technique is still used today and showcases ancient Italian craftsmanship. To ensure authenticity, we collaborated with Cosimo, a master stone mason who has worked on Trullo constructions for generations, to restore the structure. However, Cosimo’s traditional building methods, while expert, were difficult to reconcile with the precision of modern architectural plans, as he relied on intuition and experience rather than detailed coordinates and specifications.
This difference in approach led to some delays, but after multiple attempts and discussions, we found an innovative solution: we used colored spray paint to mark construction points directly on the walls and floor, allowing for a more visual and direct communication of design intent. Through ongoing dialogue and shared visual references like photos and renderings, Cosimo and his team gradually came to understand the modern design concepts and successfully integrated contemporary elements into the traditional craftsmanship. Eventually, the three Trullo buildings were restored to retain their iconic white stone walls and conical roofs while integrating the convenience and aesthetic qualities of modern life.
For the landscape, we chose to leave the land in its natural state, showcasing the raw, red soil. One particularly striking olive tree is framed as a feature, with a cactus garden providing a leisure platform. A clear, reflective pool mirrors the lush olive groves and the bright sky. The villa is decorated with local art pieces that subtly blend into the space, enhancing the authenticity of the environment without distracting from the architecture. Soft furnishings and lighting were chosen to complement the space, allowing the architecture to shine.
Bathed in the warm southern Italian sun, this vacation villa offers a rare experience that blends ancient history with modern living. It is a tribute to time, where nature and culture converge to create a one-of-a-kind vacation experience. The slow, tranquil rhythm of life at the villa allows the Franco family to enjoy a peaceful retreat. The Trullo is more than just a vacation home for the family; it is a monument to time itself. Through this project, we not only established a fruitful collaboration with local artisans but also ignited a deep dialogue between tradition and modernity, demonstrating the potential for historic buildings to evolve in the context of contemporary life.
