Our overall design concept for the renovation of this space was to optimize the functional space for a family of five and accentuate the existing window. In the renovation, we eliminated a huge centrally located kitchen island which acted as an obstacle to the feeling of the space and focused on creating an elegant and balanced plan promoting movement, simplicity and precisely executed details. We held strong to having the kitchen cabinets, wherever possible, float off the floor to give the subtle impression of lightness avoiding a bottom heavy look. The cabinets were painted a pale tinted green to reduce the empty effect of light flooding a white kitchen leaving a softness and complementing the gray tiles. To integrate the existing dining room with the kitchen, we simply added some classic dining chairs and a dynamic light fixture, juxtaposing the geometry of the boxy kitchen with organic curves and triangular lights to balance the clean design with an inviting warmth.

This busy family wanted to update the main floor of their two-story house. They loved the area but wanted to have a fresher contemporary feel in their home. It all started with the kitchen. We redesigned this, added a big island, and changed flooring, lighting, some furnishings, and wall decor. We also added some architectural detailing in the front hallway. Our busy Silicon Valley clients asked us to convert their tight-quartered 1960’s ranch house to a gracious family home that would meet their long term needs. Ease of living was paramount, both in functionality and in ordered design. The project was completed on a moderate budget.While retaining most of the structure of the existing house to avoid costly structural changes, we opened walls to improve the sight lines and flow of the house and bring in more light. We made small additions at the front and back bedrooms to gain space for the family and relatives. An existing underused patio area was improved with a simple outdoor kitchen and overhang to extend the living space to the outside. Costs were kept down with choices of modest materials. Everything was made to be functional. Ample storage has been built into the right places. The details of the kitchen were carefully worked out to accommodate all the wishes of the various cooks in the family. The house is set up to be easy to keep clean. Acoustic walls separate living from bedroom spaces so adults can enjoy time together while children sleep. The outdoor kitchen has easy access to the indoor kitchen and the garage, and its setup promotes socializing while cooking outdoors. A large part of the narrow back yard was previously unusable space due to a steep slope up to a neighbor’s higher fence. With a new retaining wall and some re-grading we took back more of the yard for the patio and play space on a new lawn. The remodeled house is a mix of contemporary and traditional elements. Cool colors have a calming effect. Traditional items such as prairie style windows, trellis, mosaic tiles, and Shaker style cabinets, break down the scale in an otherwise streamlined, contemporary design. A new gabled roof with a broad arch at the front of the house marks the entry and resolves a challenging form where the central entry is set back from walls on both sides. This master bathroom remodel has a lot of fantastic features. The semi-frameless shower glass makes the space feel open and inviting. We created an inspiring workspace that doubles as a craft area, promising to boost energy and promote relaxation. We started with Thibaut's eye-catching Dynasty collection wallcovering, which served as an inspiration for the space and satisfied the client's love of mood-boosting color. Charming floral-inspired hardware from Modern Matter (with original roots as a jewelry atelier) serves as a nod to the client's love of fine detail and complements the room's botanical wallcovering. We also carved out a dedicated jewelry-making area, which serves as a relaxing break from day-to-day pressures. Built-in desks, cabinets, and tall storage from California Closets make organizing a breeze. At the same time, plants, improved LED lighting, a music system, and vibrant colors enhance the space's mood-boosting benefits promoting creativity, focus, and energy – a perfect antidote to a hectic digital lifestyle.​​​​​​​​

This bathroom features a custom floating vanity, recessed into a drywall niche. Shelves framed in matching wood are tucked into either side of this niche and provide tons of additional storage. A large custom vanity mirror is framed by navy herringbone tiles and gold fixtures. This herringbone tile is repeated on the shower walls, while the shower floor is composed of large tiles cut into triangular shapes to promote drainage while minimizing grout lines. The sleek soaking tub is a great place to unwind from a busy day in a soothing, spa-like environment.
