A family of three designed the ideal home to age in place and care for their adult son. Designing a Unique Space For years, the Bronks had a clear idea of what their master suite should look like. Their unique design even began appearing on HGTV shows, much to their amusement. The layout was essential to accommodating their schedules without disturbing each other's sleep. The house is ingeniously split into two units. The main living area features three bedrooms—one serves as Dale's home office, another as his wife's art studio, and the third is their master suite. Connected by a wall, there's a separate 700-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment with its own laundry, kitchen, and living room. This separate apartment is home to their unique needs adult son. "Having a place where he's connected to the family but has his own autonomous space was crucial," Dale explained. By focusing on patient comfort and operational efficiency, the redesign aimed to enhance the overall experience for visitors and staff. A standout feature of this remodel was the installation of glass doors. These doors not only served a practical purpose but also added a modern touch to the clinic. The use of glass allowed for increased natural light to flow into the space, promoting an open and airy feel. This design choice aligns with current trends in healthcare architecture, where patient comfort is prioritized. Additionally, the choice of materials played a crucial role in the renovation. The installation of travertine tile throughout the walls and desk created a sense of elegance and durability. Travertine is a natural stone that not only provides a high-end look but also offers practical benefits, such as easy maintenance and longevity. The incorporation of engineered wood floors further enhanced the clinic's design. The warmth of wood can help in mitigating the often sterile feeling of medical environments, thereby promoting a more welcoming atmosphere. All windows on the upper ground floor slide away to promote cross ventilation and promote indoor/outdoor living. The large expanse of Low-E glass captures views into the forest from both levels, whilst maintaining a good thermal performance The rainwater collected from the 15000 litre harvesting system will be used to flush toilets and irrigate the landscaping. The indigenous green roof not only reduces heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter, it also serves to visually integrate the built environment with the natural surrounding vegetation.
