Traditional Family Room with built-in custom cabinetry, fireplace and TV, that converts into a Home-Theater with a large movie screen with a push of a button. The Control/Shift House is perched on the high side of the site which takes advantage of the view to the southeast. A gradual descending path navigates the change in terrain from the street to the entry of the house. A series of low retaining walls/planter beds gather and release the earth upon the descent resulting in a fairly flat level for the house to sit on the top one third of the site. The entry axis is aligned with the celebrated stair volume and then re-centers on the actual entry axis once you approach the forecourt of the house. The initial desire was for an “H” scheme house with common entertaining spaces bridging the gap between the more private spaces. After an investigation considering the site, program, and view, a key move was made: unfold the east wing of the “H” scheme to open all rooms to the southeast view resulting in a “T” scheme. The new derivation allows for both a swim pool which is on axis with the entry and main gathering space and a lap pool which occurs on the cross axis extending along the lengthy edge of the master suite, providing direct access for morning exercise and a view of the water throughout the day. The Control/Shift House was derived from a clever way of following the “rules.” Strict HOA guidelines required very specific exterior massing restrictions which limits the lengths of unbroken elevations and promotes varying sizes of masses. The solution most often used in this neighborhood is one of addition - an aggregation of masses and program randomly attached to the inner core of the house which often results in a parasitic plan. The approach taken with the Control/Shift House was to push and pull program/massing to delineate and define the layout of the house. Massing is intentional and reiterated by the careful selection of materiality that tracks through the house. Voids and relief in the plan are a natural result of this method and allow for light and air to circulate throughout every space of the house, even into the most inner core. In addition to gaining storage and study areas, could these twins show off their big personalities? Absolutely, we said! MOTIV Interiors tackled the rooms of these youngsters living in Nashville's 12th South Neighborhood and created an environment where the dynamic duo can learn, create, and grow together for years to come. Design Solution: In her room, we wanted to create a fun-filled space that supports softball, sleepovers, science, and anything else a girl might want to get into. The star of the show is a beautiful hand-printed wallpaper by Brooklyn designer Aimee Wilder, whose FSC-certified papers contain no VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). That means that in addition to packing a powerful visual punch, they meet our standard for excellent indoor air quality. We also love this wallpaper because it is composed of so many different neutral colors - this room can organically evolve over time without necessarily replacing the paper (which was installed with a no-VOC adhesive). We refreshed the remaining walls with a scrubbable no-VOC paint from Sherwin Williams (7008 Alabaster) and gave the carpets in both of the twins’ rooms a good cleaning and simple stretch as opposed to replacing them. In order to provide more functional light in her room, we incorporated a corner floor lamp for reading, a telescoping desk lamp for studying, and an eye-catching LED flower pendant on a dimmer switch sourced from Lightology. Custom window treatments in a linen/cotton blend emphasize the height of the room and bring in a little “bling” with antiqued gold hardware. Before we even thought about aesthetics, however, MOTIV Interiors got to work right away on increasing functionality. We added a spacious storage unit with plenty of baskets for all of our young client’s animal friends, and we made sure to include ample shelf space for books and hobbies as she finds new passions to explore down the road. We always prefer eco-friendly furnishings that are manufactured responsibly, made with sustainably harvested wood (FSC Certified), and use no glue or non-toxic glues and paints. The bedding in this project is 100% cotton and contains no synthetic fibers. When purchasing bedding, check for the GOTS Certification (Global Organic Textile Standard). The introduction of a desk and drawer unit created a calming space to study and reflect, or write a letter to a friend. People can sit back and relax under the porch roof of the cabana, grab a beverage out of one of the two beverage refrigerators and view a game on the television. Glass doors on the beverage refrigerators make selecting one's beverage of choice quick and easy. The granite countertops have plenty of space for a pitcher of water or a buffet of snacks. The whole beverage area gets extra protection from the elements at a push of a button -- when hidden roll-down shutters descend from the ceiling to the porch floor.

Drama created with simple lines and a bold finish that draws all eyes, this entertainment credenza will be the star of the show with its stunningly artistic Engineered Contrast Ebony finish. The case offers four push-to-open doors that easily store any entertainment or gaming equipment, and is supported by four black diagonal legs joined by horizontal and vertical stretchers.

The vertical slatted oak wood panelling provides visual interest and texture while also helping to absorb unwanted noise. KAZE Interior Design Studio designed a home for a family of 5 and their dog. The space needed to be family friendly with the kitchen at its heart. A small corner was set aside for a computer work area and a play corner created right next to the kitchen so that the kids can do their homework without being alienated in a room upstairs. The kitchen has two ovens so that pizzas and a roast can be cooked at the same time. Sofa style seating is also placed close to the kitchen to provide a relaxed area where the kids can play games and do craft activities. The dining area is situated at the very end as this is only used when guests are invited to dine. The large TV and playroom and kids’ rooms upstairs are hardly used as all social events take place downstairs. In the parent’s room, a walk in closet and bathroom is made “en-suite” and the shower is pushed out to the terrace so that talking a shower in the morning is like waking up in a resort. Wood is used as a material throughout the entire house and in that sense, it reflects the Nordic touch and idea of our heritage.
