This stunning renovation and extension by Smith & Sons Takapuna is a project that all involved are very proud of. Intentionally designed to be a modern addition to the traditional early 1900’s cottage, this extension replaced much of the rear of the existing house. It is clad in a mixture of dark stained board & batten vertical cladding and a lighter stained ship-lapped horizontal weatherboard. Beautiful polished native rimu floorboards compliment the lovely modern kitchen and lounge area. The resulting showcase of quality workmanship and design, complemented by a very well managed project meant these clients were very happy with their new family home. Quality of Workmanship: The stair is made entirely from African mahogany and is finished on all sides. Custom turned balusters were designed to meet the challenge of the tight quickly climbing radius of inside handrail and stringer. Technical Challenge: The stringers were transported fully assembled as one unit. The structure is supported only by the lattice landing at the top and free-standing concentric stringers. Inside volute was designed to nest inside the inner stringer.

Reconfigured over time, the historic orientation of this beautiful residence was reversed, posing an architectural challenge for Morpurgo Architects. Our design created facades that would function with the original entry yet face the great lawn in the back of the house. We conceived a two-story, open living space that utilizes the exterior stone on the fireplace and along an interior wall. We fashioned a sculptural staircase that emulates details of an existing stair, reduced to an elegant simplicity. Our additions and restoration of the structure were supported by our client’s desire to maintain the quality and workmanship of the historic residence. The stonework, which was hand-cut, dressed and aged to duplicate the 200-year old masonry, is an example of our mutual commitment to the preservation of our treasured past.
