Inspiration for a huge modern home design remodel in Other

This single family residential project in River Forest juxtaposes a contemporary home style and modern metal roof with traditional exterior materials – in this case, some beautiful “Medium Pink” reclaimed Chicago Common brick. The homeowner was drawn to using reclaimed brick for its unique texture and color pallet. Fortunately, the architects at Moment Design and Steve from Mondo Builders knew the perfect place to source it! The homeowners, builder, and architect all visited our Chicago yard to view samples, and appreciated the opportunity to see, feel, and compare colors of the available stock in person. The 3/8″-size mortar joints were chosen based entirely on seeing the mockup panels in real life – initial drawings originally planned for a larger joint, but the aesthetics just worked better with the smaller size. Two different batches of reclaimed brick were ultimately used, but the difference is imperceptible thanks to careful brick selection and matching in the field.

It’s about a shoemaker sometimes having no shoes. One day our own interior designer, Nathan Drewes, took a hard look at the guest suite in the dependency of his hundred-sixty-year-old house. What he saw made him aesthetically tank. While there may have been a few pieces of beloved family furniture, everything else looked dowdy, dusty, even drab. Tout suite he went right to the cobbler’s bench to reimagine the rooms. Clearly a few random patches weren’t going to be enough. The space needed total transformation. He realized a slick minimalist look would never work in those old rooms or make sense with the rest of the house. To be honest, it really didn’t reflect his taste anyway. Nathan happened to have a budding neo-classical collection, begun while still in college. For some time he had been itching to reassemble it in an appropriate setting. Despite being a millennial, his instincts led him to evoke a reverie of a luxury-loving 19th century New Orleans gentleman. Inspired by strong palettes of the past and textured interiors, he salvaged curtains and carpets from a former apartment in Lyon, found a local artisan to frame a batch of early 19th century engravings, selected rich feeling fabrics, and splurged on interesting lighting. The results are anything but drab. With rooms that conjure a shaded feeling against the intrusive tropic sun, the effect is dense with polished woods, lush with fabrics. After meeting with Mark, we determined that the goal of his remodel was that he wanted to convert his typical 2000s master bath into a transitional and functional area and get more storage. The standard cultured marble walls and soaking tub wasn’t exactly what he wanted any longer. After learning about his style, we determined a large format tile and larger base cabinets would do the trick. From the white cabinetry, and striking vein large format tile and deep soaking tub. The white shaker cabinets are for Sollid Cabinetry. We minimized the sink bases so that Mark could control what is under those cabinets, however do you see those drawer bases? They are large enough to hold anything you desire. The two-toned shower and tub deck tile feature a striking vein that appears to go on for days. The wall tiles size is a large format tile measuring at 24X48. This size allows for two great design elements. The first, allowing the vein to be continuous. Second, less wall grout. A total of 9 tiles used on the walls. To accentuate this vein we installed an oversized niche allows for a spotlight for the pebble mosaic to be a feature on the wall and the shower pan. The tub deck and curb tiles are from Arizona Tile as well. It is the Cemento Rasato – Bianco 12X24. By pairing these tiles together, it supports the wall tile and allows that to be the star of the show. The bathroom floor is Frassino, from the collection of Porta Nouva from Arizona Tile. Laid in a horizontal random offset. This selection pops the whites and grounds the elements. This bathroom features a Calcatta quartz countertops that showcase a slight vein that supports the wall tile. The bathroom accessories, lighting fixtures and faucets are all brushed nickel.

After experiencing the less detailed approach from other contractors, these homeowners jumped at the chance to partner with the very detailed nature of our approach with clients. After expressing they didn’t think there was room for an island with seating and create more usable space, we set our samples down and said, “hold my beer”. We put our heads together and figured out just the right wall modifications and corner clips to not only give them an island with seating, a really cool dry bar area, a more efficient laundry room, but we gave them a spacious and elegant new kitchen! We assisted in helping select the perfect floor throughout the house to ensure a perfect pairing of cabinet colors. A few changes to the plan ended up leading them to take the countertop material up the backsplash and create a new windowsill. All the storage solutions addressed every frustration of the old kitchen and now each member of the family adores being in their new, beautiful and efficient spaces!
