The 8,000 sq. ft. Combining tiled walls with a hand-painted custom wall design, various materials play together to tell a story of a dark yet glamorous space with an edgy twist.

This original fireplace remains a focal point of the living room, featuring its striking black tile surround and period-correct detailing. During renovation we carefully restored the surrounding architectural elements while preserving the home's historic character. Equally special was the discovery of the original oak hardwood flooring hidden beneath layers of old carpeting. Once uncovered and refinished, the floor revealed an elegant mahogany inlay border framing the hearth—a craftsmanship detail rarely found today.

The last piece for the project was in another portion of the home where a little tradition was desired while the TV was not in view all of the time. The bifold doors ensure little is sticking out when the TV is watched. A corner cabinet of heart pine offers a warmth and presence eliciting a sense of history. This beautiful American wood is hardly with us any longer. The timber today is gotten from reclamation of the huge beams once supporting America's factorys. In a while it will be bear impossible to obtain. The trees grew for hundreds of years before they were cut. Consequently the woods' grain was very tight and the wood was hard. It's desirability for flooring, furniture and cabinetry remains high today.

This Euclid kitchen renovation has a minimalist approach with a contemporary design style. This kitchen features Capozzi custom cabinetry line incorporating acrylic upper cabinets framed in a aluminum trim, a crisp white quartz counter-top and marble subway back-splash. Adding a darker finish to the base cabinets adds warmth to the space with such a cool neutral palette. So when the Society of Fellows asked me to redesign their guest rooms at Eliot House last year, my goal was to assemble an up-to-date, Harvard interior for the 21st century. The fundamental colors of Red (for Crimson), Blue & Yellow felt primarily appropriate for the venue. By blending elements from four eras on campus – Georgian, Arts & Crafts, Modernism and Counter Culture – I anticipated conjuring a sense of the past, from the vantage point of today. Notice the amount of years each style was culturally prevalent. The first 140 years of the college was run by British Loyalists. I wonder how Harvard changed afterwards? The campus certainly continued maintaining English standards of excellence, as did most of the country, by the way. Traditional furniture from this era remains timeless and becomes especially appealing when masterfully intertwined with today’s materials. That earthy Arts & Crafts period has more to do with the college than I’d first imagined. Its principles echo narratives of Thoreau at Walden Pond, Eagle Scouts, horse saddles and several clubs on campus.

When space is limited, it takes smart planning to create a multifunctional and aesthetically appealing kitchen. #CapitolKB designer Adrienne was able to add an enormous amount of storage space in this well-designed kitchen. It’s amazing what a few smart touches can do. Structurally, this kitchen remains the same, but simple switches like swapping the dated cabinets and appliances really made the difference.

This is what Mondays in New Orleans look like. Not pictured: a bubbling pot of #redbeans cooking itself on the stove. In the pre-washing machine days, Monday served as the traditional "laundry day"-- easily an all day affair when washing clothes and linens by hand. Red Beans and Rice, an easy and inexpensive meal that basically cooks itself, freed up time to spend on the wash. Monday washdays are less of a thing today (thanks to these guys!), but red beans have remained a Monday tradition in New Orleans
