Designing for an avid gardener isn't always easy, but will clear communication and frequent site visits, we were able to develop a landscape rich with diverse native plants, offering habitat to wildlife and beauty for the homeowner. Each autumn, this space becomes a kaleidoscope of fall foliage and pollinator activity.

Portola Valley has a heritage of horse ranching among pristine native woodland / grassland habitats. This situation gave rise to an architectural expression that perpetuates this culture, while fostering a responsible cohabitation of the land. With enough time on site, we were able to trace the game paths that traversed the site from East to West. These daily and seasonal routes connected the site to the bigger landscape of Canyon and its eventual merge with the Portola Valley. We situated all the habitable structures on one horizontal contour that threaded through four Northern California mature oak species on the steeply sloping site. This enabled the stables and pasture to inhabit the grassland meadow below protecting the slope, and restoring the grasslands to their native splendor.

This Takoma Park backyard was completely overtaken by English ivy and other invasive species beneath a mature tree canopy. Our team carried out a deep site cleanup, carefully removing invasives, clearing debris, and protecting the existing trees. What was once overgrown and impenetrable will be transformed into a native landscape that rebuilds soil health, restores ecological balance, supports pollinators and wildlife, and creates a healthier, more resilient environment—while inviting quiet moments of connection with nature.

Designed by Modern Habitat with a modern approach to lake living. A main house is sited with prime lake views and a 24 foot pocketing glass door that allows the outside to come in. Opposing volumes allow the house to hinge along the curving shoreline, while the continuous wrap around deck makes the transition from inside to out seamless. The bunk house is another 3 bedroom guest house positioned a short distance away on the same 2 acre lot with it's own private water views and dock.
