Inspiration for a mid-sized coastal drought-tolerant, privacy and full sun front yard stone landscaping in Seattle for summer.

The program consists of a detached Guest House with full Kitchen, Living and Dining amenities, Carport and Office Building with attached Main house and Master Bedroom wing. The arrangement of buildings was dictated by the numerous majestic oaks and organized as a procession of spaces leading from the Entry arbor up to the front door. Large covered terraces and arbors were used to extend the interior living spaces out onto the site. All the buildings are clad in Texas limestone with accent bands of Leuders limestone to mimic the local limestone cliffs in the area. Steel was used on the arbors and fences and left to rust. Vertical grain Douglas fir was used on the interior while flagstone and stained concrete floors were used throughout. The flagstone floors extend from the exterior entry arbors into the interior of the Main Living space and out onto the Main house terraces.

Rear yard backed up to other homes above. Use of small round pieces of wood and rusted metal over a png banco solved the problem creatively. Fireplace adds interest.

Providing a natural habitat for native bee, birds and butterflies, this client asked for native plants outside the balcony porch. Our designer planted such native plants as purple milkweed, hyssop, woodland sunflowers and wild bergamot requiring less water, fertilizer and maintenance. A custom-made bird bath, hand carved from granite with a steel base attracts all kinds of nature to this secret garden. Rusted steel edging follows the path as it curves the bank of the slope. These unique doors feature rusted steel panels with hand scraped cedar trim. The doors measure 12' wide and 11' high. and is made of 4 solid wood sections.

Here you can see the rusted steel countertops and door panels, the flooring and cabinets were manufactured using reclaimed wood from the area.

The Saltbox is clad in 22 guage steel that will turn a reddish brown color as it develops an elegant rust patina over the coming years. An easy-attach accessory system allows accessories such as the kitchen window herb box to be quickly attached to the house exterior without penetration the thermal envelope.
