Quality of Workmanship: The stair is made entirely from African mahogany and is finished on all sides. Custom turned balusters were designed to meet the challenge of the tight quickly climbing radius of inside handrail and stringer. Technical Challenge: The stringers were transported fully assembled as one unit. The structure is supported only by the lattice landing at the top and free-standing concentric stringers. Compound transitions for several moulding details and handrail provide continuous flow of the stringers and balustrade from the cylinders at the bottom throughout the stair and balconies. Stair Safety: The project required spanning of greater run than normal. Additional treads and risers were added to create a nice rise to run ratio for a more comfortable stride at the walk path. Quality of Workmanship: Seamless joinery of mouldings throughout curves and transitions. Technical Challenge: Designing a stair that laid out to fit the well and span. Providing sufficient structure in the freestanding stairway to tie into the floating 2nd floor at the top of the stair.

Solid hardwood staircase and supplemental structural iron work for securing the freestanding stair all done in house. Curved stringer and handrail transitions at all pitch changes. Technical Challenge: Assisting with engineering freestanding floor systems and integrated stairways. Rigging and hoisting stairways up multiple floors. Designing floor areas and transitions to accommodate flights becoming narrower as they went higher. Logistics of working in Manhattan.

This removes the need for intermediated post that you sometimes find in traditional balustrades for them to meet code requirements. Quality: No joints or seams could show on the finished panel system. All parts were cnc cut for the most precise joinery possible. Technical Challenge: Since all the panels where fabricated off site super precise field dimensions were a necessity. Using those measurements and CNC fabrication, panels were created that fit perfectly together and on the site.

Overcoming technical challenges, architects implemented continuous insulation and air sealing, using energy modeling and embodied carbon accounting to balance performance and aesthetics. Together with the addition of solar panels, the result is a fully decarbonized, ILFI Zero Energy-certified, all-electric house with improved insulation, air quality, and sustainability.
