Tile Girl
We almost died of heat stroke trying to get this travertine patio fixed for this homeowner in North Scottsdale. He paid a different company to come out and replace a bunch of cracked tile. They started taking the tile out and when they realized the job was harder than they thought, they took off with his money, and never came back. Our client, Tom, found us through the Houzz website and messaged me about his project. After looking at it, Robert, our master tile technician, got started tearing out the rest of the broken tiles. That was a chore in and of itself because the previous installer decided to tile over tile! See picture below. You never know what you are going to find when you start tearing out tile! After Rob got the tile back in we came back and cleaned, honed and sealed it. This will be the LAST patio job for us until October! This is the perfect Farmhouse bath. Let’s start with the gorgeous shiplap. This wife was adamant that she wanted floor to ceiling shiplap. It was a bit interesting to complete because these walls tile halfway up the walls for a wainscoting appearance.

This was a job I did earlier in May this year where I was asked to clean this lovely Limestone patio installed at the rear of a house in Haddenham near Thame on the Oxfordshore borders which had succumbed to the ravages of the English winter weather and was far from looking its best.
As a Tile Doctor and carpet technician I have invested a lot in powerful high pressure machinery that can make light work of interior and exterior installations so taking on this patio was not a problem and it was nice to work outside for a change.
On arrival I set-up the high pressure equipment and then proceeded to pressure wash the patio in order to get the worst of the dirt out of the tile. Then I soaked the tiles in a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean which was left to dwell for thirty minutes. The next process was to use a deck brush to scrub the cleaner into the stubborn areas and then rinse the patio with clean water which was then removed using a wet vacuum. After letting it dry I then had to re clean the worst areas again following the same process until I was satisfied with the condition of the tile.
The patio soon dried in the warm sun and later that day I was able to seal it using a couple of coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is a colour enhancing impregnating sealer that can be used internally and externally, it works really on Limestone and did well to bring out the natural colours in the stone.

Preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday is turning out to be a bit different. Gone this year is the uncle who throws crumbs of food and bits of trash in the fireplace. Or the kids that like to poke the fireplace logs sending sparks in every direction.
This year, we get to create our own scene. Once you and your family have finished the delicious meal, now it’s time to make the rounds of Internet calls. Whether you use Zoom, Facebook, Skype or any other system, one thing is for sure…you need a warm, inviting, good-looking background.
The fireplace is the perfect go-to background, especially when you can see and hear the crackling of the fire. Put a little extra time in decorating around the fireplace, and of course, include the cookies and pumpkin pie. To ensure chaos isn’t erupting behind you, make sure your fireplace and chimney is ready to go.
Begin with a Chimney & Fireplace Inspection
By getting a chimney inspection you’ll help to ensure smoke goes up and out of the house, debris is not blocking it and any animals are safely living outside of your chimney. You certainly don’t want your online guests to think you smoked the turkey in the fireplace.
Chimney backup or a Smokey fireplace is usually caused by an insufficient draft in the flue. However, there are lots of other reasons for smoke backup including the partially open dampers, too small of a flue or a dirty chimney. This is one situation that’s best left to a certified technician to identify and repair.
Debris knows how to make its way into the chimney. Leaves, twigs, paper, plastic, and anything else flying around on windy days, has this special radar, and when it finds a chimney, it’ll try to make its way in. If the chimney doesn’t have a chimney cap, or if it was blown off or shifted from the high winds, debris found a new home!
Animals are wonderful to watch outside. We’ve watched a couple of the squirrels in our yard go from a lean body to a very plump size, all in preparation for winter. What comes next is a cozy place to sleep. The chimney is a perfect. It’s warm and protects the animals from the outdoor elements. If there isn’t a chimney cap or if the cap is loose or moved in a way to squeeze in…perfect!
What is a 14 Point Inspection?
A 14 point chimney inspection for your fireplace tells us a story about the events that occurred over the past year’s freeze and thaw cycle. It reveals to us any wear and tear, the frequency of use and the age of the chimney. This is great information to have in order to stay on top of any necessary chimney repairs and know the current conditions of worthiness for use.
Since the chimney is high on the roof, we take pictures of your chimney to show you the current condition. If any repairs are needed, you can see it for yourself.
You have a little time before the ‘live’ internet chat on Thanksgiving Day. As part of your preparations, get your chimney swept and inspected today. Call 877-244-6349.

As you may know, Superior Chimney writes a lot of articles to educate the Chicagoland area on chimneys and how to identify problems. Every once in a while, it is good to go back and review the basics. That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to discuss what are the components of a chimney. Let’s get started.
What are the Components of a Fireplace?
We’re going to get started on the actual chimney itself. Most chimneys are built of brick and some are constructed of a wood framed chase with siding on it to match the rest of the home. The traditional masonry fireplace chimneys include (from the inside out) a firebox, where the firewood burns and gas starter are located. Going up is the throat, smoke chamber and then chimney flue. These are the components of a masonry chimney where the exhaust/air travels through - From the firebox and out through the top of the chimney. You can most often ‘see’ your chimney from the ground, you will notice the bricks and on top of that will be the chimney crown (cement slab) which keeps the elements away from the brick chimney. On top of the chimney crown is the chimney cap. This is what keeps animals & debris from entering the chimney flue… raccoons, squirrels, birds, bats, etc… down the flue, and into the firebox.
Now that we know what components that a chimney has, let’s focus on a couple of key areas.
Fireplace Dampers
All chimneys are fitted with a fireplace damper. A fireplace damper is a metal plate that opens and closes, allowing smoke from the fireplace to move up and out of the home. If you have a fire and the fireplace damper is closed, or restrictive, the smoke will back up into your home. The smoke needs a place to go. When the fireplace is not in use, the damper should remain closed in order to keep the cold air out of your home and warm air from escaping your home. Just because you have a fireplace does not mean that you have to deal with cold drafts in the room the fireplace is in.
Chimney Flues
As we all know, heat rises. The heat from the fireplace is going to rise taking with it the smoke, and other gases. This process is known as drafting. It is important to have good drafting as it prevents the smoke or gases from staying in your home and harming your family.
Chimney Flue Liners
Flue liners are important to the chimney; they are your firewall. It works to prevent overheating of any combustibles next to the chimney. And, it helps so the chimney construction doesn’t corrode from the byproducts of burning wood, or creosote. There are a few types of flue liners, such as fire clay tiles, heat resistant concrete, and stainless steel. Superior Chimney recommends the use of stainless steel in our geographic freeze and thaw climate. Our technicians can give you the details when we are at your home.
What is the Purpose of Taking Care of the Chimney?
Chimney Fires. This is where regular sweep & inspection is crucial to the health of your home. Without a chimney sweep or chimney cleaning each year, (whether you use the chimney or not, gas or wood burning) the chimney can cause a fire to transfer to your home. Only Nationally credentialed service technician professionals know and can inspect the key components of a fireplace for known condition and continued use. Be sure to contact us today!

SHINGLE ROOF REPLACEMENT
Northmen Roofing, as a “specialty” roofing contractor, tackles the most difficult waterproofing challenges on a daily basis and we pride ourselves on the ability to extend the life of a roof system for maximum comfort and value.
Unfortunately, not all roofs can be repaired and sometimes it’s simply time for a full roof replacement. Some fail due to poor installation or materials but in most cases the Florida sun and rain is enough to weather a roof faster than any geography in the county with the cost/risk associated with a repair being prohibitive.
This particular shingle re-roof, using CertainTeed Landmark shingles, was completed in beautiful Winter Park, FL. Utilizing our in house metal fabrication custom brick step flashings and dark drip edge metals were fabricated to match the metal panels installed on the awnings giving this property a wonderful custom look and feel. The dead valley was expertly treated to prevent leaks in the most vulnerable part of the roof system. Valleys are treated with metal and self adhesive underlayment exceeding Florida building code. As with all roof services, this is backed by a no hassle warranty from the Northmen Roofing technicians who specialize in complex repairs!
Contact Northmen Roofing if you would like to speak with a roofing specialist. Experience matters! Visit us at https://www.northmenroofing.com or call (407) 498-2137.
