This custom fireplace design was client's vision that came to life and accomplished what the client desired, which was to provide a focal point in the room and add warmth to the space. The fireplace features dramatic and vibrant real fire flame and is especially enjoable because of its location in the room and because there is no glass installed around it. This custom fireplace is designed with three open sides and two linear ribbon flame fires about thirty six inches long, covered with crushed black glass to enhance flame pattern. Collection hood was installed and suspended at the top, which connected to proper-sized vent system and power vent fan to ensure proper draft. This appliance is a custom built decorative gas fireplace. The custom outdoor fireplace is rated for use with propane only and exhausts through a power vented 14” B-vent flue. The fireplace controls are designed to ensure that the exhaust fan has established an adequate draft via a pressure switch prior to initiating the pilot gas ignition sequence. This custom fireplace was approved by to the requirements contained in ANSI Z21.50-2014 “Vented Gas Fireplaces” standard. The investigation began on April 19, 2016 and concluded on April 29, 2016. The following non-destructive tests required by the applicable product standard were conducted with satisfactory results. Interlock systems Input manifold pressures Temperature Functionality The main burner tray is made of 16 gauge low carbon steel. Burners are easily removable, without the use of special tools, for repair and cleaning. The burner tray is readily accessible and designed so that one person can perform the removal and replacement unassisted. The burner is installed in a granite surround which is capable of supporting more than 300 lbs. The fireplace has an induced draft and the design is such as to prevent gas flow to the main burners and pilot burners in the event the blower providing the draft becomes inoperative. A pressure switch is used to achieve this. All controls are accessible for normal servicing and functional adjustment in position and are replaceable during normal servicing. Removal of an access panel to secure access to the control compartment is employed. Each appliance is equipped with an automatic gas ignition system which provides for ignition of main burner gas by means of proved pilot. If the presence of the pilot is not proved, automatic shut-off of pilot and main burner gas. The design of the custom fireplace is such that the flue gases from all burners are carried out of the appliance through a single flue outlet. The fireplace is equipped with a vent safety shut-off system designed to shut off main burner gas in the event the appliance venting system is blocked. The pressure switch device complies with a nationally recognized standard. The design of an electrically operated vent damper device and the control system are such that the damper is in the open position at all times that gas is flowing to the main burner. The firepalce is equipped with an automatic valve which controls both the pilot burner and the main gas.

Red Quarry Tiled Floor Restored in Abington

Here’s an interesting work I recently completed on a red Quarry tiled floor at a house in the town of Abington, Northampton. In post-war Britain (more specifically in the 1940s and 1950s), many new homes were built with Quarry tiled hallways and kitchens, so quite a popular feature back then. These floors are typically quite hard wearing and therefore ideal for such high traffic areas; additionally they don’t need a great deal of maintenance but their appearance will degrade over time. In this particular house, the Quarry tiled floor had been covered with linoleum for many years, causing significant patches of visible black mould. The floor also had a loose tile (which I promptly reset to mitigate the potential tripping hazard) and splashes of paint due to a lack of precaution while the house was being renovated. Needless to say, the floor needed a lot of work. Before beginning the cleaning I made sure to vacuum up all of the loose debris from the floor. I then applied Tile Doctor Remove & Go to the tiles, left it to dwell for a short period, and then agitated the area with a black stripping pad, adding water to aid the process. This helped to break down any old and ineffectual sealer, along with the paint splashes marking the tiles, leaving a much cleaner and more refined appearance. I followed this up with Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up to eliminate the odd speck of cement and grout haze dating back to when the floor was first installed; Gout Clean-up has an acid base so it’s not advised to leave it on the tiles for too long, consequently as soon as I was happy it had done the job I rinsed it off with water and give the floor a thorough wash down. I used a wet-vacuum machine to extract as much water as possible and gave the floor a once over with steam cleaner which improves the evaporation of any remaining moisture by heating up the tiles. After completing the cleaning process, I left the house to allow time for the floor to dry completely. Upon my return, I conducted a damp test which showed the floor needed to dry further before sealing so I left an industrial fan in place for a couple of hours to help speed things up. Once I was satisfied that the floor was dry enough to take the sealant, I sealed the floor using Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an interesting product that will not only provide durable stain protection but also improves the natural colours of the tile. While the floor required a lot of time and work to restore, I think you will agree the results were certainly worth waiting for. Phil Vissian Northamptonshire Tile Doctor

KBIS 2021: Café Appliances Endless Optimist Showcase Kitchen

February 9th, 2021 marked day one of the first ever virtual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), which showcases hundreds of new products coming to the design industry in 2021 from brand names ranging from GE to Kohler. While LIVDEN didn’t exhibit at KBIS this year, our sustainable tile was featured at the Café Appliances’ showcase kitchen, Endless Optimist, designed by exhibit designer TK Wismer. The GE brand Café Appliances manufactures custom appliances ranging from brightly colored refrigerators to sleek coffee makers for modern homes. Their trade mark is “Distinct by Design,” and after touring their test kitchens at KBIS, you will see why. Tk featured the playful PUZZLE PIECE series in MINT on our recycled 12x12 Polar Ice Terrazzo as the kitchen backsplash.

Affordable Hardscapes of Virginia - (Virginia Beach, VA) Our client had recently constructed a new custom waterfront home in Virginia Beach, VA. The homes main property is elevated almost 30' above the water, boat lift and dock. The natural hillside leading from backyard is steep, experiencing erosion, and difficult to trek up and down. To access the main property from the dock you would need to climb the steep embankment and to get to the dock below it was a definite test of will. After meeting the client to discuss options it was clear to us that a innovative blend of science and art would be needed to achieve their goals and expectations. Affordable Hardscapes of Virginia submitted an initial design utilizing Eagle Bay's Dublin wall stone as the primary material to construct the 18 individual steps necessary. At the clients request to utilize material left over from the homes construction (2" thick limestone) and incorporate wood to match homes elements the final design was approved. Planning for the project included submittals and approvals by way of a Joint Permit Application administered by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC). Do to access limitations and the desire to have minimal environmental impact all excavation and installation was done using only hand tools. Each of the (18) steps was individually built in place on solid footings with subsurface drainage. The steps risers are built with 12" x 8" x 4" (tall) Eagle Bay Dublin Freestanding Wall block in Tan. The limestone step treads are from recycled material left over from the construction of the new home. The wood used to frame around the limestone treads is clear Spanish Cedar cut and planned to 2" x 6". Patrick McGrath
