Our San Francisco studio designed this beautiful four-story home for a young newlywed couple to create a warm, welcoming haven for entertaining family and friends. In the living spaces, we chose a beautiful neutral palette with light beige and added comfortable furnishings in soft materials. The kitchen is designed to look elegant and functional, and the breakfast nook with beautiful rust-toned chairs adds a pop of fun, breaking the neutrality of the space. In the game room, we added a gorgeous fireplace which creates a stunning focal point, and the elegant furniture provides a classy appeal. On the second floor, we went with elegant, sophisticated decor for the couple's bedroom and a charming, playful vibe in the baby's room. The third floor has a sky lounge and wine bar, where hospitality-grade, stylish furniture provides the perfect ambiance to host a fun party night with friends. In the basement, we designed a stunning wine cellar with glass walls and concealed lights which create a beautiful aura in the space. This project is the third collaboration between the client and DEANE. They wanted their kitchen renovation to feel updated, fresh and modern, while also customized to their tastes. Frameless white cabinetry with modern, narrow-framed doors and satin nickel hardware contrasts cleanly against the opposing rift-oak wood cabinetry. The counters are a combination of polished white glass with Caesarstone countertops in Airy Concrete quartz providing durable, functional workspaces. The single-slab, White Calacatta Sapien Stone porcelain backsplash provides a dramatic backdrop for the floating shelves with integrated lighting. The owners selected a dual-fuel, 6 burner Wolf 48" range with griddle, and decided to panel the SubZero refrigerator and freezer columns that flank the message center/charging station. The custom, boxed hood adds bold lines, while the full Waterstone faucet suite is a memorable feature. It was important to create areas for entertaining, so the pantry features functional, dark navy lower cabinetry for storage with a counter for secondary appliances. The dining area was elevated by the custom furniture piece with sliding doors and wood-framed glass shelves, allowing the display of decorative pieces, as well as buffet serving. The humidity and temperature-controlled custom wine unit holds enough bottles to host the ultimate dinner party

This is a “right-sized” new home, designed by TBDA in Oak Park, IL. While its space planning and technology are entirely 21st-century, its form echoes the scale and detailing of its bungalow and foursquare neighbors. Indoor-outdoor experience is optimized with a front screened porch, complete with a wood-burning fireplace. This house is LEED for Homes Platinum certified, and pre-certified through the Passive House Institute US PHIUS+2015 program. In addition to the efficiency, durability, and inherent air quality that result from Passive House design and building methods, we have strictly controlled adhesives, caulks, sealants, and paints to minimize VOCs, and have used no-added-formaldehyde cabinetry and insulation. We engage a third party air quality testing agency at the end of construction to provide a report on air quality. NaturaHDP from Florida tile. Originally from the Italian word natura, which means “natural”, Florida Tile’s Natura is exactly that. A modern interpretation of one of the most natural building blocks of civilization, wood. Organic in its wood grain, but thoroughly contemporary in its colorful design palate, Natura is the perfect marriage. This evolution of a wood has brought a true commercial vehicle that will perform technically and aesthetically in any environment. Available in 7 distinct colors, the NaturaHDP is created in a 6x24 plank with a slightly distressed wood grain surface. The graphic and texture are based on a traditional Oak plank, but the style has been refined to meet the demand of current interior design needs. Complimented by a 24” bullnose, the line boasts a color body with 40% recycled content and third party certification. The surface is compliant with the new ANSI DCOF Acutest requirements for surfaces (commercial or residential) expected to be walked upon when wet and the product has been tested for indoor air quality and water absorption.

This family throws some mean parties where large crowds usually sit at the poolside. There’s an entire section of this walk out second level that is dedicated to entertaining which also gives access to the pool in the backyard. This place comes alive at night with built in surround sounds and LED lights. There was just one issue. The kitchen. The kitchen did not fit in. It was old, outdated, out-styled and nonfunctional. They knew the kitchen had to be address eventually but they just didn’t want to redo the kitchen. They wanted to revamp the kitchen, so they asked us to come in and look at the space to see how we can design this second floor kitchen in their New Rochelle home. It was a small kitchen, strategically located where it could be the hub that the family wanted it to be. It held its own amongst everything that was in the open space like the big screen TV, fireplace and pool table. That is exactly what we did in the design and here is how we did it. First, we got rid of the kitchen table and by doing so we created a peninsular. This eventually sets up the space for a couple of really cool pendant lights, some unique counter chairs and a wine cooler that was purchased before but never really had a home. We then turned our attention to the range and hood. This was not the main kitchen, so wall storage wasn’t the main goal here. We wanted to create a more open feel interaction while in the kitchen, hence we designed the free standing chimney hood alone to the left of the window. We then looked at how we can make it more entertaining. We did that by adding a Wine rack on a buffet style type area. This wall was free and would have remained empty had we not find a way to add some more glitz. Finally came the counter-top. Every detail was crucial because the view of the kitchen can be seen from when you enter the front door even if it was on the second floor walk out. The use of the space called for a waterfall edge counter-top and more importantly, the stone selection to further accentuate the effect. It was crucial that there was movement in the stone which connects to the 45 degree waterfall edge so it would be very dramatic. Nothing was overlooked in this space. It had to be done this way if it was going to have a fighting chance to take command of its territory. But when the “kind of retired” couple, as they describe their current status, decided to finally build their ultimate dream house in the flower streets of Corona del Mar, they opted not to skimp on the amenities. “We wanted this house to have the features of a resort,” says Ron. “So we designed it to have a pool on the roof, five patios, a spa, a gym, water walls in the courtyard, fire-pits and steam showers.” To bring that five-star level of luxury to their newly constructed home, the couple enlisted Orange County’s top talent, including our very own rock star design consultant Richard Bustos, who worked alongside interior designer Trish Steel and Patterson Custom Homes as well as Brandon Architects. Together the team created a 4,500 square-foot, five-bedroom, seven-and-a-half-bathroom contemporary house where R&R get top billing in almost every room. Two stories tall and with lots of open spaces, it manages to feel spacious despite its narrow location. And from its third floor patio, it boasts panoramic ocean views. “Overall we wanted this to be contemporary, but we also wanted it to feel warm,” says Ron. Key to creating that look was Richard, who selected the primary pieces from our extensive portfolio of top-quality furnishings. Richard also focused on clean lines and neutral colors to achieve the couple’s modern aesthetic, while allowing both the home’s gorgeous views and Kathy’s art to take center stage. As for that mahogany-lined elevator? “It’s a requirement,” states Ron. “With three levels, and lots of entertaining, we need that elevator for keeping the bar stocked up at the cabana, and for our big barbecue parties.” He adds, “my wife wears high heels a lot of the time, so riding the elevator instead of taking the stairs makes life that much better for her.”

Harbor View is a modern-day interpretation of the shingled vacation houses of its seaside community. The gambrel roof, horizontal, ground-hugging emphasis, and feeling of simplicity, are all part of the character of the place. While fitting in with local traditions, Harbor View is meant for modern living. The kitchen is a central gathering spot, open to the main combined living/dining room and to the waterside porch. One easily moves between indoors and outdoors. The house is designed for an active family, a couple with three grown children and a growing number of grandchildren. It is zoned so that the whole family can be there together but retain privacy. Living, dining, kitchen, library, and porch occupy the center of the main floor. One-story wings on each side house two bedrooms and bathrooms apiece, and two more bedrooms and bathrooms and a study occupy the second floor of the central block. The house is mostly one room deep, allowing cross breezes and light from both sides. The porch, a third of which is screened, is a main dining and living space, with a stone fireplace offering a cozy place to gather on summer evenings. A barn with a loft provides storage for a car or boat off-season and serves as a big space for projects or parties in summer.
