It was time for a change. I sold my Floating Home (see Sleepless in Portland: Houseboat Diary) and my La Quinta home (see Transitional Living, La Quinta) and downsized to a house that's a better fit. The home was lacking sufficient storage so I added a beverage center with storage cabinets and a butcher block countertop to the dining room. An Ikea table frame was powder coated in dark grey and fitted with a Cambria Quartz dining top. A matching quartz piece was added to create a kitchen bar seating area and includes a beautiful waterfall edge. Reclaimed wood square tiles were added to the kitchen pop up ceiling and the living room fireplace to add warmth and texture. Black and white photography of the local desert landscape frame the fireplace. Although the home is mainly grey, black and white, pops of red are a recurring theme thought the interior and exterior, including a red barn door at the kitchen pantry. I broke design rules and didnt take the "safe" route. Quirky accent items can be found throughout the home. These include a wall-mounted family accordion, framed movie quotes in one of the guest rooms, a custom canvas photo of my miniature schnauzer, and dragon print accent pillows throughout. A Tongue and Groove (T&G) wood ceiling transformed the master bedroom and a beautiful red area rug adds color and warmth. The result is DARING and yet comfortable. The backyard was completely renovated. Tons of white rock were removed and beautiful landscaping and lighting were added as well as an additional 500 square feet of pavers. A sun shade, red umbrellas, and patio misters create inviting seating areas for friends and family. Tongue and Groove wood was also added to the outdoor patio ceilings. A high end surround sound system and built in BBQ with patterned cement tiles complete this outdoor living space. The process was exhausting and time consuming but now that it is over, I am thrilled with the results. I now live in a home that nourishes my soul and better represents my style and tastes.

This project called for a very modern interior with minimal visible wooden millwork, save for a few focal points such as the spectacular interior doors built by E. F. San Juan. We also supplied Loewen windows and exterior doors and custom E. F. San Juan Invincia™ impact-rated wooden entry door systems. Challenges: The interior doors were the greatest design challenge of this project. Interior designer Cindy Meador and the homeowners envisioned very modern, flush, European-style doors made of rich walnut with veneers for the bedrooms and bathrooms. The original design called for a brass inlay border to separate the horizontal panel veneers from the stiles and rails of the door; however, after some discussion, it became clear that this would not create the most stable construction to stand the test of time and use. Solution: We worked with the team to determine that a white maple inlay would create the desired contrast and enhance the all-wood simplicity of the door design. The most challenging part of building these doors was the time-consuming process of laminating the veneers and incorporating the maple inlay. As you can see from the photos, the entries become art displays along with the other beautiful art pieces that Cindy and the owners have incorporated into the home’s interior design. The Loewen windows and exterior doors are sleek and fit well with the home’s modern feel. These windows and doors, along with the sizable Invincia® main entry door built by our team, are made to impact-rated standards that will fortify the home and its occupants against the Gulf Coast elements. The completed home is a masterpiece by architect Tom Christ, interior designer Cindy Meador, and the Davis Dunn Construction team. The team here at E. F. Here we have a six year old Indian Sandstone tiled floor located a property on the outskirts of Lancaster. Measuring 100 metres squared, the very large floor had under floor heating in the concrete sub base. The type of stone used inside the property is what we commonly refer to as ‘patio Sandstone’, a material which is usually used outside because of its very rough texture. It’s not particularly comfortable to walk across in bare feet, hence why many people consider it be impractical for internal flooring. Nonetheless, the property owner was keen to make the rough textured floor as feet-friendly as possible for people walking over it. At Tile Doctor we have developed a process known as milling, which utilises diamond encrusted pads combined with a weighted rotary machine to smooth the rough surface, leaving it looking and feeling a lot nicer and more practical to live with. The milling process is only done once, but while the Sandstone will still need cleaning and sealing in the future, it won’t be nearly as difficult as when it was rough. The job would take over two weeks to complete due to the fact that the existing grout needed to be removed and replaced with a flexible floor grout: a very time consuming process. As mentioned, the surface of the Sandstone was very rough, and so needed to be milled down to make it a lot smoother to look after and make it easy to clean and seal. This was achieved by using Tile Doctor’s 50 Grit diamond encrusted burnishing pads, fitted to a weighed rotary machine and run along the entire surface area of the floor. Through this process the stone became much smoother and more aesthetic – completing one of our main objectives for the customer. Next, we started breaking out the already loose and badly applied grout with our grout removal tools. The builder who had installed the floor had used a sand/cement-based grout which wasn’t flexible. As a result, it started to crumble and loosen quite quickly after exposure to the underfloor heating. We removed this and replaced it with a far more flexible grout. Once the whole area had been successfully milled and the grout replaced, the Sandstone floor was left to dry out over the weekend. Upon our return to the property, we cleaned off any dust and resin left over from the milling and grouting processes, before leaving it to dry for a further 24 hours. The next day we returned to seal the whole floor with two coats of our impregnating sealer Tile Doctor Colour Grow. The sealer fills the pores of the Sandstone to prevent ingrained dirt and stains, while also emphasising the natural colours in the stone. It also provides a robust matte finish, which is what the customer wished for. It wasn’t the easiest of processes to get the Indian Sandstone into a condition where it would be both suitable for internal flooring and aesthetically pleasing, but the results proved to be very much worth the time and effort invested. A fun, custom and unique creation we designed and constructed which incorporates many facets to your outdoor living experience! With symmetry in mind we still wanted to bring forth a "softness" to this ensemble. Soft arches and curves combined with a balanced layout and symmetrically cut stone. We used one of our favorite types of stone for the facade- an Oklahoma thick flagstone called "Ozark". We installed this in a dry stack pattern for all vertical surfaces other than the sides of the chimney and pizza oven where we used a buff colored mortar to create a shadow joint. A thick Pennsylvania Bluestone was used for the counter top. The intricate "thin flag feather" insets and backsplash is a Tennessee thin flgastone veneer called "Crab Orchard ( gray). This was painstakingly cut and installed piece by piece in a dry stack pattern. Extremely time consuming but gorgeous! The chimney sits app. 12' tall and the pizza oven sits app. 9' tall. Plenty of room in between for the Green Egg, sink, refrigerator, grill and cabinets. Low voltage night lighting was also incorporated into the backsplash as well as surrounding landscape. We also recommend a clean burning wood for pizza ovens. This one is stocked with European White Birch. These photos do not do this project justice, yet due to the season we will be posting better ones come summer time. Copper planters will also be placed on top of the 16" wide backsplash cap.
