This three-room project undertaken by Modern Kitchens of Syracuse encompassed the kitchen, a wet bar/coffee wall, and the laundry room, making this suite of spaces work together seamlessly. Desiring an elegant and highly functional space that is warm and inviting along with creating several areas for eating, cooking and meal prep that could all be enjoyed together, the kitchen and living space took special planning to meet the homeowner’s lifestyle. Complemented by natural lighting design choices, comfortable and functional materials were selected. For example, wood products used for the beams and columns were reclaimed from an old structure, and the kitchen island was designed to be one large piece of custom sized furniture. The clients chose Lancaster Recessed Inset doors in Nordic White finish for the kitchen perimeter, while a custom stain finish on knotty alder wood was used on the island, the custom hood, and the hutch. Several organizational features including roll-out storage drawers , tray partitions, spice storage drawers, adjustable drawer partitions, a double waste basket cabinet for trash and recycling, dish drawers with plate holders, and large drawers for storage were also incorporated. This gorgeous, contemporary wine cellar makes its home in a basement in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California. This Wine cellar was a very special collaborative project undertaken with the homeowner. It is always an incredible pleasure to assist in turning a wine cellar dream into a reality. The Homeowner's vision was to create this entire underground space from scratch. A stunning wooden grille covers the cooling unit face inside the contemporary wine cellar. Inspiration for a mediterranean living room remodel in Other

This 1950's split-level ranch house was completely renovated to meet the needs of a growing family. The central roof was raised to admit generous natural ambient light to the kitchen and living spaces. New metal windows were enlarged and repositioned to capture distant views. Interior finishes were replaced and the mechanical system revised to provide radiantly heated floors. The project was undertaken while Jim was a partner with Richard Brown Architects, AIA, LLP.

The project began with a 1970's, split-level ranch, on a spectacular hilltop site with a view to Mt. Hood. The house was transformed and updated by expanding the living room, renovating the kitchen and interior surfaces, and adding a second level master bedroom suite it now sits comfortably on the narrow site and takes full advantage of natural light and distant views. Improvements to the site include new terraces, walls and stairs, wrought iron railings and a long, linear reflecting pool. The new entry garden and pool provide a quiet transition from the street to the newly canopied teak entry doors. This residence was undertaken by Jim as project architect with Richard Brown Architects, AIA, LLP.

This condo is in an industrial redevelopment district in Jersey City, right across from Manhattan. Before, the dated wooden cabinets and black granite was not in synch with the modern loft look. Ceilings were low (7'2"), light was weak. The peninsula/breakfast bar under stairs was awkward, and the laundry jut out, making the entrance too narrow and claustrophobic. First, we raised the ceiling 7 inches, and straightened the sight lines, widening the entry to the condo. This allowed us to install new upper cabinets are on average 10 longer than the older ones. We put down white, scratch-resistant hardwood floors, white acrylic cabinets from IKEA, quartz counters, and Bosch appliances. The laundry was brought into the kitchen. We also added a second 1 foot wide 9 foot long counter space with cabinets underneath, making this a galley kitchen. We used stainless legs and upper cabinets to make the 2nd row of cabinets (an IKEA hack), which kept the kitchen from feeling narrow. We extended the kitchen into the living room, extending it 5 ft longer, and making it open concept and functional. The floating staircase was closed with risers to keep the kitchen cleaner. Finally, we used a large format tile as backsplash, making clean up a breeze and put in LED undercabinet lights. I love how the reflective surfaces bounce the light around. The most expensive part of the project was raising the ceiling and straightening the entrance, which cost about $10,000. We splurged on Bosch 800 appliances, top of the line flooring (Mohawk Architexture), countertop (Caesarstone), tile (Porcelanosa), and doors (Ringhult IKEA) but managed to stay under $20,000 otherwise. The kitchen was part of a full renovation designed by the owner, and undertaken by Nazco Interiors.

The homeowners had owned this 2,800sf apartment for many years but had never undertaken renovations as they lived in Washington D.C. The goal was to functionally update and renovate the spacious Classic 8 landmark apartment while preserving its pre-war character. With south and east exposures at 10 windows facing Central Park and downtown from a high floor, the apartment was light-filled and afforded significant views from the living room, dining room and library as well as two of the bedrooms. The goal was to create an urban oasis in the aerie-like apartment with light and views in a way that seamlessly integrated traditional methods, modern materials, lighting and technology.
