Midtown Sky Garden by Hank White, FASLA, and Aaron Booher of HMWhite
This excursion to a spectacular workplace landscape will take visitors up high above the busy streets of Manhattan. The award-winning, 6,500 square-foot terrace of the Midtown Manhattan Sky Garden takes advantage of panoramic skyline views while providing an intimate garden backdrop to the mid-century-modern building’s newly-renovated interior workspace. Richly textured and seasonally diverse plantings include a dense blanket of drought-tolerant prairie grasses, wildflower perennials, and spring flowering bulbs, punctuated by flowering Crab Apple trees. At twilight, the garden evolves into a subtle stage set of textured plantings, rustling softly against the glow of a frosted glass parapet rail—a soothing space where workers can escape the conference room or the electrifying noise of the dense urban environment. The roof garden’s biophilic design has elevated employees’ well-being, productivity, and morale. Photo copyright Amy Stroud

1/4 minus gravel is is same path material used in Seattle Parks. Here we have set Montana Ironstone on the 1/4 minus gravel to great utility. The reason I prefer this grade is the ability to pack tight like concrete so that it will set the stone steady and does not grow weeds as readily as a more coarse gravel might. The other reason I like this is that is does not "contaminate" the surrounding beds like a larger particle might. Gil Schieber

Explore this revitalized backyard oasis in Washington, DC, where overgrown grass, weeds, and greenery once dominated the space.
Faced with the challenge of maximizing every inch in this limited area, our goal was to reclaim and transform. The result: a thoughtful design featuring a custom fence for privacy and aesthetics, a space-saving bike shed, and a cozy bench surrounded by mosquito-repellent plants. Witness the metamorphosis of this once-overgrown haven into a harmonious blend of functionality and style—a transformed retreat where space is utilized to its fullest potential.

This is a few months after. Everything starting to grow. We utilized both, cultural or mechanical methods applied through best management practices. Recommended mowing heights on turf. Proper water practices. Proper fertilizer used based on soil analysis.

This is a drought tolerant island flower bed, the customer had a small budget so it was my job to keep it simple while making sure our utilized as much space as possible. These plants will grow to fill out most of the space within a few years. Well also leaving some space for her to plant what she wanted as well. This was an overgrown weed filled, small tree infested area. We cleaned it up , Removed everything that was in here and made it simple and clean.
