Architect: Michelle Penn, AIA This barn home is modeled after an existing Nebraska barn in Lancaster County. Heating is by passive solar design, supplemented by a geothermal radiant floor system. Cooling uses a whole house fan and a passive air flow system. The passive system is created with the cupola, windows, transoms and passive venting for cooling, rather than a forced air system. Because fresh water is not available from a well nor county water, water will be provided by rainwater harvesting. The water will be collected from a gutter system, go into a series of nine holding tanks and then go through a water filtration system to provide drinking water for the home. A greywater system will then recycle water from the sinks and showers to be reused in the toilets. Low-flow fixtures will be used throughout the home to conserve water. Designing a completely round home is challenging! Add to that, the two tubes are merely 8' wide. This requires EVERY piece of furniture to be custom built to fit the continuous rounding walls, floors and ceiling. We used every possible inch to provide storage for our clients personal belongings and household needs... sustainable for 3 years! Solid walnut wood paneling and custom built shelving was used throughout as well as tons of hidden storage... in, under and atop every possible inch of this project was locate and utilized! HOME THEATER MASTERPIECE This Northern Audio custom-designed home theater includes a 7.2.4 surround system, with flush-mounted Triad Gold speakers, AcousticSmart theater seating, hidden and motorized shades. We also installed a Sony 4K projector, placed “butt kicker” subwoofers in all the theater seating, and hung an impressive 181 inch, solid aluminum screen. Behind the screen, we hid all the electronics for the house! Speaking of the house electronics, Northern Audio transformed the entire home into a “smart home” utilizing Control4 technology. (The house was previously an old Lutron Homeworks system).
