Inspiration for a mid-sized transitional attached one-car garage workshop remodel

This renovation project updates an existing New York 1920s apartment with a modern sensibility. Replacing the cellular pre-war layout of the central spaces with a built-in walnut credenza and white lacquer side board effectively opens the plan to create a unified and spacious living area. The back side of the full-height dining room side-board screens views from the entrance foyer. The modern design of the new built-ins at center of the space is balanced by perimeter radiator covers and a full-height bookshelf which work with the period trim detail. The new powder room features white thassos wall tiles, robern medicine cabinets with custom cove lighting, a custom translucent glass shelf, frameless glass shower, and a wall-hung toilet and sink to create a very clean look. We sourced this historic 100-year old workbench that was given a second life by adding new plumbing with a cast iron sink, and custom fabricated shelving that houses new electrical for soft overhead task lighting. ⁠We partnered with a local fabricator to make this dream into a reality. It's the perfect place for our client to prepare her beautiful bouquets.

Prior to the remodel this home was 100% original and left to age while the homeowner moved on. Our clients are the second homeowner to the home, and we helped to keep the original feeling of the home as well as worked to reuse the original St. Charles steel cabinets where possible. The clients found a second steel cabinet Kitchen out of state with taller upper cabinets than the original and with a lift of the original soffit we were able to combine the original and additional cabinets to create a wonderful and more functional Kitchen. Each cabinet was relocated, painted, and reinstalled. It's hard to imagine that the Kitchen previously featured terra cotta painted cabinets with a pink countertop and backsplash 4x4 tile. The lighting, windows, and many other design details are still original throughout the home. As the home has many interesting minor angles - we had the flooring installed on an angle of it's own to add a wonderful detail and not fight with the other angles within. Spacecrafting Photography

Community requirements state that each home must have a cedar shake roof. We successfully worked with the builder and client to achieve a contemporary exterior in a heavily traditional community. We worked with the builder and the client to create a vanity with "floating" mirror on their facing vanities. A separate standing make-up and jewelry counter also became part of the design detail. Custom Quonset Huts become artist live/work spaces, aesthetically and functionally bridging a border between industrial and residential zoning in a historic neighborhood. The open space on the main floor is designed to be flexible for artists to pursue their creative path. The two-story buildings were custom-engineered to achieve the height required for the second floor. End walls utilized a combination of traditional stick framing with autoclaved aerated concrete with a stucco finish. Steel doors were custom-built in-house.

Removing the stone wall that once separated the kitchen from the dining room (now the family room–living room) allowed more natural light to flood the kitchen. Removing the wall also improved the flow between the two spaces, and now the homeowners working in the kitchen have a way to check on the kids or visit with guests when entertaining. The barn door can slide to the right to cover the mudroom or to the left to shut off the pantry. We are proud to say that this kitchen was featured in a Houzz Kitchen of the Week article!
