Langhorne Carpet Company proudly announces its latest collaboration with Vermont Custom Rug Company’s David Hunt on an elegant reproduction of the early 19th century worsted wool carpet for the dining room of historic Hyde Hall.
A National Historic Landmark and New York State Historic Site in Springfield, NY, eight miles north of Cooperstown, Hyde Hall is considered “one of the finest examples of the neoclassical country houses in the United States.” The agricultural estate was the project and prize of wealthy British-born landowner George Clarke (1768-1835). Clarke owned 120,000 acres in New York’s Leatherstocking Region and designed Hyde Hall on the bank of Otsego Lake with Albany architect Philip Hooker. The mansion, the estate’s centerpiece, was constructed from 1817 to 1835. Today, Hyde Hall resides within Glimmerglass State Park.
Recent years have brought Hyde Hall a meticulous, history-driven, artisan-fueled restoration to recreate Clarke’s precise original vision.
David Hunt chose Langhorne Carpet Company to recreate the Brussels looped pile carpet for the property’s dining room. Made from the finest worsted wool, a yarn used today almost exclusively in apparel, Brussels carpets were a 19th-century status symbol among America’s wealthiest citizens, including presidents and major landowners. According to Clarke’s scrupulously kept ledgers, in 1831 he purchased “122 linear yards of Brussels body carpet, along with 24 yards of Brussels border carpet from the showroom of Lowe & Connah in New York City for the sum of $308.00. A hefty amount for the period,” said Hunt.
The carpet—which, Hunt said, may well be one of the first examples Wilton carpet woven in the United States—remained in the dining room through the end of the 19th century. As for the two tuffets? They not only survive—they also remain covered in the original textile.
This existence of these original tuffets for nearly two centuries, said Hunt, is both incredibly rare and fortuitous. “Having a documented portion of the original carpet, intact 186 years after manufacture, is, for the textile historian, a gold mine of information. Although the border portion of the design remains most visible, having the ability to document and verify the yarn quality, sett (pattern) of the weave and most importantly the original colors is huge.”
Hunt “dissected” the tuffets to reveal the yarn that, like in all Wilton weaves, is buried beneath the textile’s back, unexposed to sunlight, air, or cleaning agents. When he did, he found the carpet’s original colors and pattern. From there, he and Langhorne used a black-and-white photograph of the original carpet to create a botanical pattern for the field that would, he said, “honor the style of the border.”
He then turned over the work to Langhorne, to create the patterns, match the dye colors, and weave the carpets on narrow looms much like the ones used 200 years ago. Langhorne, he added, is the only mill in the United States—and one of very few in the entire world—capable of doing such a job.
“Langhorne has this wonderful capability to do all sorts of different things. I don’t think a lot of people understand that option is out there, and it’s a lot easier than you think to do it,” he said. What’s more, “They’re real people, working people—the folks on the loom, the weavers, the folks in the office: Except for the clothing, they’re the same type of people you would have found in a mill 200 years ago. It takes special people to do this, and that’s Langhorne.”

James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding Replacement — Littleton, Colorado
Project Summary:
Complete exterior transformation using James Hardie HardiePlank fiber cement siding in Light Mist with coordinating Arctic White trim. Installation completed to Elite Preferred Contractor specifications, qualifying for full 30-year James Hardie product warranty and 15-year ColorPlus finish warranty.
Materials Installed:
• James Hardie HardiePlank lap siding — Light Mist ColorPlus finish
• James Hardie trim and fascia — Arctic White
• Complete soffit integration with proper ventilation
• All flashing and water management details engineered to specification
Design & Aesthetic:
The Light Mist finish delivers a modern, sophisticated palette that complements Littleton's residential character. Arctic White trim creates crisp architectural definition and visual separation between walls and roof lines. The clean horizontal profile of HardiePlank lap siding provides classic curb appeal with contemporary minimalism.
Why Fiber Cement for Littleton Homes:
Littleton experiences Colorado's signature freeze-thaw climate — repeated daily temperature swings that challenge standard siding materials. James Hardie HZ5 formulation is engineered specifically for Colorado's elevation and weather extremes. The fiber cement composite is dimensionally stable through thousands of freeze-thaw cycles, resists moisture absorption and rot, and meets fire-resistant requirements for increasing home value and insurance considerations.
ColorPlus Technology:
The factory-applied ColorPlus finish is kiln-baked and UV-stabilized at the manufacturing facility — not field-painted. It resists fading, peeling, and chalking through 15+ years of Colorado's intense sun exposure. The warranty is realistic for Littleton's altitude and climate, not national averages.
Installation Quality:
This project was installed by 5280 Exteriors, a James Hardie Elite Preferred Contractor. Elite Preferred status requires verified installation quality, ongoing manufacturer training, and demonstrated track record. Only Elite Preferred Contractors can issue the full 30-year product warranty and 15-year ColorPlus warranty. Standard installation does not qualify.
Performance Advantages:
• Zero maintenance required — no annual painting, staining, or sealing
• Non-combustible material — meets fire-resistant standards
• Engineered for Colorado's freeze-thaw climate zones
• 30-year product warranty (Elite Preferred installation)
• 15-year ColorPlus finish warranty
• Increases resale value in competitive Littleton market
• Improves energy efficiency through proper wall air sealing
Before & After Transformation:
The before condition shows aging, weathered siding. The after transformation reveals a modern exterior with clean lines, architectural definition, and premium material quality. The Light Mist and Arctic White palette creates a cohesive, intentional aesthetic that enhances the home's curb appeal and overall property value.

The homes in Heritage Hills in Chapel Hill, NC are representative of the popularity and explosive growth of American Home Ownership that occurred during the economic expansion that followed the end of WW II. They were designed and built to foster the benefits and sense of “community”, where families could come together and share theirs and their children’s lives. They are typically in very desirable locations within their larger communities, and remodeling them with modern amenities, increasing the performance and efficiency of them, and having them Green Certified (independent third-party verified) makes them extremely attractive to buyers, and helps to raise other property values within the neighborhood.
Green Certified Remodeled Homes offer significant value and advantage in the marketplace over similar homes in their area, which is especially important as a new, younger era of home buyers enter the market. Current trends suggest that younger (as well as many “seasoned”) homeowners are interested in smaller, more efficient (and thus affordable) homes situated closer to shopping, their work, entertainment opportunities, and access to the economic and environmental benefits of mass transit.
These older homes also offer an additional value that is continuing to gain visibility and appreciation in the market place. They were built from lumber from slower-growth trees (denser and harder wood), and as such offer superior structural support compared to the same home built using lumber from today’s faster-growing (softer and less-dense wood) trees.
Robin and Kent had lived in their 2-story Gambrel Roof home in Heritage Hills since 1994. The house was structurally sound, due in large part to the old-growth (and denser) yellow pine that was used in its framing. They loved the quiet neighborhood, its sense of community and amenities, and their home. It suited their life-style and needs; and they had decided that they would remain in the home. It was showing its age, and was in need of general repairs and maintenance, and its energy, water, and indoor air quality performance was continuing to increase their ongoing cost of ownership.
Robin loved the screen porch that looked out on their private and nicely landscaped back yard, but she wanted to be able to use it in the colder months of the year. She was unsatisfied with the kitchen and the mud room / laundry room, and the darkness of other living spaces. A previous water leak in the laundry room had resulted in a large patch of mold that had compromised flooring, wall board, and insulation and contributed to the homes reduced indoor air quality.
The home lacked insulation in the crawl, and inadequate insulation in the attic. The single HVAC unit had been replaced a few years earlier with a more efficient unit, but with a single programmable thermostat control on the first floor and aging and un-insulated ducting, the second floor was often over-heated in the summer months.
The original wood windows had begun to deteriorate and were drafty and inefficient, and the original wood-burning fireplace was an open conduit for escaping conditioned air as well as an inlet for wood-smoke smelling air being pulled into the home. The siding had been replaced a few years earlier with a cement-fiber product, but the exterior wood trim was compromised and beginning to look unsightly. Its original architecture had been altered over the years in ways that presented ongoing maintenance and durability issues, as well as disrupting the elegance of the original design.
Kent has worked for over 30 years in the Environmental Sciences field, and is considered to be a national expert in understanding the sources of, and human exposure to pollutants in indoor environments. He had always been very conscious and cautious about the effects on indoor air quality that the construction, furnishings, and products used in home had on him and his family.
Project Goals
Increase the performance of their home by improving energy efficiency by at least 40% and lowering their natural gas and electric utility costs.
Increase the performance of their home by reducing water usage by at least 40% and lowering the water utility costs.
Increase the comfort of their home that was being compromised by an inadequate HVAC design, inadequate insulation, inefficient and compromised wood windows, and copious air intrusions and drafts.
Improve the healthiness of the homes indoor air quality that was being compromised by an open wood-burning fireplace, and prior water intrusion that had allowed colonies of mold to thrive.
Create a new Kitchen, Family Room, Home Office, Mudroom, and Laundry Room that featured some of the latest designs and trends and harmonized with the rest of the homes charm.
Increase the usefulness and aesthetics of the screened porch by creating a warm and inviting semi-conditioned 3-Season Room that extended the times during the year that it was comfortable.
Introduce day-lighting into areas of the home that were dark and uninviting.
Brighten and harmonize all of the interior finishes.
Protect and restore the exterior of the home with superior-performing products and finishes.
Achieve Gold Level Green Home Certification in conformance with the ICC 700-2012 National Green Building Standards (NGBS).

WHY CHICAGO DOWNTOWN HOMES REQUIRE SPECIALISTS
Urban painting presents specific challenges that suburban contractors might miss:
Building Regulations: We navigate strict HOA rules, freight elevator bookings, and insurance requirements (COIs) common in Loop high-rises.
Climate Control: Managing humidity and temperature fluctuations in glass-walled units to ensure proper paint curing.
Drywall Integrity: Addressing cracks caused by the natural swaying and settling of Chicago’s tallest buildings.
Pro Tip: When hiring a Chicago painter, always verify they carry the high-limit liability insurance required by downtown property management companies.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
