The homeowners wanted to keep the original character of the home whilst giving their home a complete makeover. The kitchen space was expanded by opening up the kitchen and dining room, adding French doors off the kitchen to a new deck, and moving the powder room as much as the existing plumbing allowed. A custom kitchen design with custom cabinets and storage was created. A custom "princess bathroom" was created by adding more floor space from the adjacent bedroom and hallway, designing custom millworker, and specifying equisite tile from New Jersey. The home also received refinished hardwood floors, new moulding and millwork, pot lights throughout and custom lighting fixtures, wainscotting, and a new coat of paint. Finally, the laundry was moved upstairs from the basement for ease of use.

However, upon meeting the client it was clear she wanted a ‘wow’ island, symmetry in design and plenty of functional storage. As well as a contemporary, family-friendly space it was also important the space that still respected the heritage of the house. The original walls of the property had many angled walls and featured some tight spaces, so careful consideration of SieMatic's cabinetry choices was given to ensure maximum functionality in those spaces. After much consideration, The Myers Touch specified SieMatic’s SC10 Cabinetry in a Provence Oak Laminate finish which was placed in a framed-style at the rear wall. The same cabinetry was specified for under the island to create contrast with the new and original material features in the space. In order for the family to keep the kitchen uncluttered, careful planning of internal storage systems was considered in the form of using SieMatic’s internal Drawer boxes and their MultiMatic internal storage system which were used to store smaller items such as spices and sauces, as well whilst providing space for slide-out drawers and storage baskets. To ensure an elegant yet ‘wow’ factor central island, The Myers Touch combined contrasting textures by using 30mm Silestone Eternal Calacatta natural stone, polished worktops with ‘waterfall island’ edges and a Corian solid surface back panel. The distinctive geometric patterned Corian panel in Cameo White looks particularly spectacular at night when the owner's turn on the architectural-toned lighting under the island. Appliances chosen for the island included a sophisticated Elica Illusion extractor hood so it could be totally integrated in the new architectural space without visual distraction, a Siemens iQ500 Induction Hob with touch-slide control and a Caple Under-counter Wine cabinet. To maximise every inch of the new space, and to ensure the owners had a place for everything, The Myers Touch also used additional cabinetry and storage options in the island such as extra deep drawers to store saucepans, cutlery, and everyday crockery. The eye-catching Antique-bronze mirrored splashback not only helps to provide the illusion of extra space, but reinforces family ‘togetherness’ as it reflects and links the rear of the kitchen ‘snug’ area where family members can sit and relax or work when not in the main kitchen extension area. The original toned brickwork and 18th Century steel windows in the original part of the extension also helps to tell the story about the older part of the house which now juxtaposes to the new, contemporary kitchen living extension. A handy door was also included in the extension which leads to the garage on the main road for family convenience and over-flow storage. The Miele induction hob includes an integrated extraction which allows the client a seamless view across the island and out to their wonderful farmland vista. A Neolith Bromo worktop provides both beauty and durability, making use and cleaning of this kitchen a dream. Hidden within a bank of tall cabinetry lies a large walk-in larder space, perfect for storage of everyday items, or for keeping pre-made party food a secret! The dark SieMatic cabinets in Onyx oak laminate create drama and visual strength in this large open-plan space, whilst a soft sterling grey finish was chosen for the island and console cabinets to bring warmth and light into the central area. The entrance hall was designed around the eye-catching Crucial Trading striped carpet running up the stairs, and creating a joyful thread of spring colour that runs through the whole house. Porcelanosa tiles throughout the ground floor are durable and easy to maintain in this hard working space, and also help to bounce the light around. My client's favourite colour is orange, and this colour can be seen in the choice of paint colour for the inside of the front door and the tap in the cloakroom, both adding a touch of playfulness to the space. The Pooky 'Sweetie' lamp base works with the striped carpet, whilst the black and white lampshade provides contrast, keeping the colours from being too overwhelming. Selecting a console table with drawers provides much needed storage for keys and dog leads, and a space for shoes. In the cloakroom we chose Cole & Son wallpaper, presents an unexpected conversation piece and adds softness to the hard floor tiles and bathroom fittings.

This customer in Henfield was contemplating digging up her Terracotta kitchen floor and replacing it, the tiles were ingrained with dirt which had proved impossible to remove and as a consequence were left looking flat, dull and very un-appealing. Additionally she had an elderly dog that had been ill several times in the corner area and she really struggled to make it look decent again. Following a quick test I was able to persuade her to try a clean and re-seal first. The first step was to deep clean the floor to remove the ingrained dirt and any previous sealers. As well as the dog I had two rugby playing sons to deal with so to make it easier for the family I split the floor up into areas and worked on one area at a time. The tiles were first soaked in a strong solution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean before scrubbing it into the tile and grout with a black pad fitted to a buffing machine. The tiles were rinsed, the now dirty cleaning solution extracted and the process repeated until I was happy that the Pro-Clean had done its trick and the floor was as clean as it could be. The Terracotta tiles now looked clean but completely washed out so I assured the customer that once the tiles had been sealed the colour would return and more. Unsealed Terracotta marks easily so given I left the customer dust sheets to walk on. I returned after two days to ensure any moisture had left the tile and proceeded to seal with six coats of Tile Doctor Pro-Seal which is highly recommended for use in food preparation areas and gives a high gloss finish whilst providing maximum stain protection. As each coat takes 40 minutes to dry I took the opportunity to clean her slate front door step as well. The customer was very happy with the finished floor and I’m glad to report she has decided to keep the floor.

For a long time, the kitchen was a functional room and was treated as such aesthetically. The best way to check clinical cleanliness was against a light background; built-in cupboards and kitchen appliances were clad appropriately in classic white. Today, the kitchen is more a place for us: a communicative living room and above all, a sensual living space. Its colours have been updated too. The trend towards darker shades in recent years, from dove grey to elegant black, can also be seen on work surfaces, front panels and walls. Lighting is the most important factor in dark interiors. Whereas there was a simple ceiling light in the past, today’s dramatic ambience is supported by strategically-placed spotlights and concealed LED strips. In keeping with a cosy atmosphere, individual areas are highlighted whilst others are left in darkness – and with an intelligent lighting system, the mood can be digitally controlled to match the time of day and atmosphere.

For my clients who lead busy professional lives, working from home can often mean work bleeds into every corner of the house. In this St Albans project, I reimagined a spare bedroom as a strategic retreat – a place to find focus and then leave it behind. I designed sophisticated blue-grey cabinets alongside natural wood texture panels and caramel leather, to create a calming, quiet atmosphere that helps lower the heart rate for a productive day. Whilst the bespoke cabinetry houses the bulk of the office "admin," I kept the essentials – like the printer – accessible but integrated into the overall aesthetic. By creating a dedicated, curated space, it’s much easier for the brain to switch from "Work" mode to "Home" and ultimately, a study shouldn't just be about where you work: it should be about how you want to feel when the laptop finally closes.
