We removed the overgrown yews from this small front yard and added a narrow crabapple tree in the corner, a fragrant Carlesii viburnum and added a limestone stepping stone path leading to a birdbath. There are lots of perennials as well in this small east facing garden.

In 2024: the large hardy hibiscus flowers (North American nativars which are distantly related to tropical hibiscus) make you feel like you are in the tropics, even though you are in zone 3/4 (USDA) or Canada zone 4b/5a. This plant, which was about 2-3 feet tall initially, has grown to 4-5 feet in height Watch it develop and grow more, as it provides a beautiful allée along the driveway! The pistils of the hibiscus are the exact colour of the rudbeckia, so the hardy hibiscus and the nativar Rudbeckia are united by a common theme, and look as if they belong together. Closeup of flowering hardy hibiscus in the sunny backyard. Just a year after planting, this flower, larger than your hand, provides tropical-looking colour and bloom size, despite being situated in Canada zone 4b/5a - USDA zone 3/4. It's the magic of proper plant selection and siting - putting "The Right Plant in the Right Place". The results are totally worth it for the client, who feels transported to the tropics whenever they bloom in the summer!

This is a downtown city lot, 36' x 88', with housing for a family of 5. The parents are busy professionals, but the wife enjoys gardening. The brief is for organic landscaping that looks good in all 4 seasons (zones 5b/6a Canada, zones 4/5 USDA).
The house is a century home, brick with white woodwork. The N-facing front landscape was designed as a mixed garden, with a spring flowering tree (saucer magnolia), shrubs (azaleas and yews as foundation plants) next to the house; tree peonies, other perennials and mixed bulbs in sunnier parts of the front. All 4 seasons are enjoyed by the family.
In the spring, the graceful semi-circular curves of the windows are echoed in the gentle arches of tree branches, and the magnolia blossoms appear like butterflies poised for flight. The traditional landscaping and the century house complement each other.
