The Alter Architect's Studio, PLLC

I met Jim initially while touring one of the homes Alter did which was on the Charlotte Mid-Century Modern Home Tour in 2019 as my wife and I were moving to the area from Michigan. In late 2019, we purchased a mid-mod 1959 Ranch in South Park that needed some TLC. I called Alter Architects to learn more about their process and see examples of other homes they worked on. After seeing some great examples - one being in the Cloister neighborhood - we knew we found the right firm to engage on a renovation plan. Both Jim and Zack are great to work with, their designs are creative and practical - staying true to the mid-mod vibe without the typical prima donna attitude. After some initial sketches were done, we approved their drawings, and they led us through the quote process to choose a suitable GC to manage the renovation, which was completed in April of 2021. We incorporated some very cool 60's breeze blocks into an enclosed garage / carport as well as a newly constructed cabana that seamlessly was designed around a palm-springs-like 15' x 30' pool. I would highly recommend Alter Architects Studio and I count both Jim and Zack as friends and to this day we are still in communication about details, landscaping and other ideas to make the property flow as it should.

Zack Alsentzer is an energetic, creative force!! He helped us realize our dream home with our addition. His ideas are amazing and he has the greatest eye for where the natural light falls in a space. We had complicated ideas that he was willing and able to fully realize. I cannot recommend him and his team enough!

We recently worked with Zack from Alter Architects on a redesign of our 1928 Craftsman home. Zack met with us to get a feel for our lifestyle and preferences and over the course of several months, helped us to re-imagine our home! Throughout the process, Zack was responsive, detail-oriented and very thoughtful. During construction, Zack would conduct site visits and it felt like he was a true advocate for us. Highly recommend working with Zack if you are considering a home renovation and want to be very intentional and practical about your design.

Even after his "job" was done, Zack was there for any questions and opinions. I can testify he truly cares about doing the best job - and has a real connection with wanting to satisfy the client while keeping a consistent feel to the neighborhood's soul and history.

I had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with Zack and Alter Architects on a Residential project. He has an innate talent for being able to take the clients' different needs and translate into a final design that is both highly functional and beautiful. I feel fortunate that his work and design provided the perfect base and architecture for layering in my interiors work and palette. I would love to collaborate again with Alter Architects in the future!

Zack is a man of his word. When he commits to your project, you get his full attention and a design vision that is beyond what you might have imagined. He was always on time; professional; listened to my concerns; and delivered a complete product. You can't go wrong with Alter.

Zack is incredibly friendly and down to earth. He really makes the design process a breeze and was able to get us exactly what we were looking for. He designed a 2 story garage that looks amazing and matches our house really well.

Upon the purchase of a craftsman house that was, well, a slight fixer-upper, one of our first tasks was to hire an architect. My and my wife's tastes are quite eclectic for sure - we wanted a lofted area over the kitchen under vault ceilings, a long island in the kitchen, no dining room... vaulted ceilings in the bedroom.... all working off the original house (we did not want to completely tear it down and save as much from the original house as possible. In addition to the house, we wanted to build a larger garage in the back yard with a 1/2 bath and a loft upstairs for my personal work space. We interviewed several architects, and they all had great ideas - but Zack "hit the ball out of the park". He really took time to listen to our ideas and what was important to us - his initial mock up of the plan was really, really close to what we wanted, and incorporated many amazing features and use of space that we would have never thought of, yet complimented what we wanted perfectly. My wife and I are the general contractors on this house build, so the project is taking it's time and the house is not yet complete (we are just about to start drywall on the inside - the outside of the house and complete garage are done). There is not a day goes by that my wife and I are not completely in love with our creation of a house - it is simply amazing. If you are in the Charlotte, NC area, this is the architect you should be working with.

Alter Architect's designs were thought provoking, inspirational and truly represented every thing we were looking for in a house we could call our home. Zack is super professional, congenial and very attentive both during the design process and the actual construction process. We've been thrilled with them in every aspect and couldn't more highly reommend them.
