Campion Walker Landscapes

We’ve worked with Campion Walker (CW) on several large and small projects encompassing every aspect of our 2-acre property including hillside stabilization, erosion control, surface and subsurface drainage, a variety of irrigation systems, hardscape – steps, retaining walls, pool deck, fire pit, and extensive plantings. During each of these projects, CW explained their design philosophy to ensure we understood the scope, functionality, product/material choices, and connection with the existing environ. CW’s design approach combines the right mix of hard and soft landscape features that seamlessly blend the architectural style of our house with the rustic coastal/canyon environment – taking our property to a new level! One of the largest projects that CW did was to remediate a landslide caused by another contractor. During the course of this project, CW discovered and corrected surface and subsurface drainage issues which could have manifested in another landslide if left undetected. CW’s workmanship is flawless whether it’s above ground or underground. I cannot think of anything they’ve ever had to redo for us. We are very pleased with CW professionalism, design sensibility (functional, imaginative, and beautiful), workmanship, and attention to detail. Highly Recommend!

I have long worked with Nicholas Walker. My first project was the first home we purchased in Topanga. Nicholas created a lovely guesthouse amongst other improvements to the home. My next project was a cafe I opened about 5 years ago where Nicholas and his crew installed beautiful cement tiles from Bali on our patio. He built our main service counter with a perfectly executed poured in place tops which customers always complemented! my most recent project was a lot for my new campervan rental business. It looked like a junk yard at first but we had a vision for it and Nicholas executed it to perfection! Nicholas runs a very tight ship, his team is always on time, diligent in their work and very CLEAN. I really appreciate Nicholas's expertise and knowledge in every aspect of these projects. He brings a wealth of experience and holds himself and his team to the highest standards. I have the complete confidence when working with Nicholas and I look forward to more projects in the future!

Nicholas Walker is a passionate and dedicated landscape designer/builder who’s exquisite taste is matched only by his deep knowledge and integrity. Nicholas helped to shape our vision into a water-wise, ecologically sustainable, low-maintenance, low-fire hazard, and visually harmonious system that worked with what our property naturally presented. As an arborist and all around “plant-nerd,” he has a wholistic and ethical approach to design which works both aesthetically and systemically. He was an absolute pleasure to work with, collaborative but with a definite point of view, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. Let me be more specific: When we bought our property in Topanga, we met with a number of designers. Nicholas was the only one who talked to us about the whole process, from what native trees and plants would thrive on our land, to how we could grade and shape the property to help the landscape flourish based on the principals of permaculture. He discussed the whole system- not only how it would look and how the landscape design would interface with the hardscape, pool, and house (he knows more about architecture and construction than most of the contractors we met with BTW) but about how the landscape would develop over time. I particularly loved the way he talked about our landscape design decisions not only in terms of our lifetime as property owners, but how it would evolve in a sustainable way over generations to come. He talked us through drainage, water capture systems, potential hidden costs that might arise around our pool, and even about how to attract natural birdlife and pollinators. He helped us put into place a multi-step plan that would work within our budget, that began with grading and the culling of plants/tress with root systems that were destructive, while supporting natural plants that would survive within the right system. He had ideas that appealed to us, because they were elegantly thought through and clearly presented. Everyone on Nicholas’ team was professional, and simply top notch. It’s clear that all the guys like working for him (Again, a very different experience from past Landscape and tree services). It’s a nice feeling to work with someone as professional and passionate as Nicholas. He’s not trying to sell you anything other than the right way to do things when it comes to our relationship to the planet. If you have not done so, I highly recommend meeting with him and asking for a visit to his private home and “Lab” in Topanga, where you can see some of his landscape design working on a practical, integrated level.

We purchased a home in Topanga Canyon 15 years ago with a main house and guest house, and close to 3/4 of an acre of land. Being a young family with a 15 month old daughter at the time, we were also nature loving, grow your own food idealists intent on turning this into a garden paradise. It didn’t take long, though, before overwhelm set in. We quickly realized this was not a small front yard in the valley but a serious mountain ready to teach us a lesson. On top of it all, where there wasn’t just bare dirt waiting for the winter rains to wash it all away, what was growing were invasive and unattractive species that didn't belong. We knew we needed help but didn’t have the resources to have a professional service fix everything for us all at once. So, I still vividly remember our initial walk through with Nicholas Walker from Campion Walker Garden Design, Inc. He was not only able to reassure us that despite the initial appearance, our property had so much potential, but also to help us realize how to be in the moment and approach it as a living organism and not just a quick fix and walk away. Fifteen years later, as our home and landscape has evolved and developed, I see more than ever the wisdom of his words and vision. For our part, we are still idealists but much more practical ones now! While Campion Walker is certainly capable of performing a masterful overhaul, for us what I appreciate about Nicholas is his willingness to meet us where we are at each moment, take us through step by step, and look at this as an ongoing project. Nicholas has a passion for what he does and is truly supportive. His communication is patient, clear and understandable. Most importantly, at least for us, Nicholas’ work is grounded in sustainability and environmental stewardship. He speaks eloquently about the symbiotic relationships of the living ecosystem, and about creating a landscape that will be there for our children and grandchildren. We wish we had taken better photos of the transformation but in looking back we do realize how far we have come. From terraced gardens, to a diverse fruit orchard (we love that our kids get to have those memories of picking fresh fruit from their childhood), to careful and artistic stewardship of our oak trees, to an extravaganza of aromatic and beautiful lavender and sage, along with overall no nonsense advise about fire mitigation, drainage and more, we are grateful for Nicholas and the Campion Walker team!

His wisdom and artistic vision is incomparable and we are deeply grateful for everything he and his company have done to transform our property and our lives for years now. Nicholas is as passionate and informed as anyone we have ever met in property, structure, and landscape design, plants, trees, homes ( inside and out). In August, our 200+ year old oak tree died and fell over on our sloped hillside. Once the remains of the tree were carted off, we were left with a barren, badly compromised slope. I was referred to Nicholas Walker of Campion Walker. He personally involved himself in the process of erosion control that thankfully has withstood these massive rains. I am in awe of his landscaping knowledge and professionalism, but above all his caring and concern to help. Campion Walker has been there every step of the way; and happily we are soon to be planting native plants and trees.

Campion Walker is really an extraordinary company. They are on top of their game. Nicolas is a very gifted and talented landscape designer and his crew knows exactly how to maintain the property according to the plan. I have had experiences where I hire a great landscape architect/designer but then the crew cannot maintain the vision, so the yard ends up looking far from great. YOU Won't have that problem with this company. They are all on the same page and meet weekly to make sure everything is on track with your project and maintenance. Anne is always on call at the desk and is probably one of the most amazing at taking care of requests and managing any problems that might come up.She is an excellent communicator and I adore her! You won't go wrong with this firm! They are amazing and will be more like family at the end of your project.

Campion Walker designed and installed the garden at my home in Hollywood. They've also maintained it throughout the years since. It is truly a magnificent oasis that has given me tremendous pleasure. My experience with Campion and the landscapers has only been positive. Also, their billings are reasonable. It has been a long and terrific relationship, and I'd highly recommend them.

Nicholas Walker and his expert crew have transformed our yards into stunning drought tolerant gardens of beauty. My wife and I are thrilled beyond all expectations! Let me put it this way: Nicholas is a master of his craft and a true artist to boot. He is a never-ending stream of ideas but not authoritarian about any of them. First Nicholas spent a good deal of time understanding what we were looking for (to the extent we even knew) before explaining what would work in our mini environments. I’m a writer and my wife is an actress and so we were right at home and thrilled with the creative journey Nicholas took us on in exploring our property. As he presented his recommendations he was actually unspooling his vision of what could be… all the while heeding to our budget. Then came the actual work. His crew was professional, friendly, hard working and very personable. Truly nice guys who we still miss around the house. So, that’s our happy story. We recommend Nicholas in every way. In a scale from 1 to 10, we would give him a 15… Nicholas is honest, a true mensch and has become a friend.

My yard is not a big yard, but I have some very challenging landscaping (giant bamboo to say the least). The project include irrigation, plantings and new lighting. This was a job that required both quality services and a good sense of what to do. "Richard" - my guy on the job was terrific. The landscaping looks beautiful. Richard knows plants and what he did fit in perfectly with the existing growth. First rate!!!

I highly recommend, and am extremely satisfied with my choice in engaging Nicholas Walker of Campion Walker Landscapes to help me realize “my peaceful place “ when I had to relocate into a new home. My backyard was concrete with a strip of dried up Bermuda grass running along the backside of an old Jacuzzi. The front yard was a thirsty lawn. Brainstorming with Nicholas was exciting! He is a walking plethora of information regarding design options, recycled, sustainable materials and practices, drought tolerant plants, and incorporating what materials were already on hand. He listens intently not only me the client but also to the site. When all the concrete was torn up, from my backyard, instead of ordering a dumpster and hauling it off to the dump Nicholas recycled most of it. He directed his wonderful team members to cut the concrete into beautiful reusable stone pavers that he then placed to create stunning pathways throughout the garden and created wonderful planters for my front yard. In the front yard Nicholas used all sorts of different succulents to design a spectacular alternative to a lawn. Both my front and back gardens have come alive, use little to no water and are now a haven for hummingbirds, butterflies and the very important bees. I loved working with Nicholas and his team.
