Exemplar Carpentry & Home Renovations

We hired Matt last summer for a moderate-sized project including: supporting a sagging wall in the living room, drywalling three rooms, putting a ceiling on the laundry room and painting the entire house (3500sqft) including cabinets. Matt and Dennis did an excellent job in all the above. They were very helpful with ideas and went out of their way to accommodate our summer vacation plans. Matt was very professional, reassuring, and overall a great general contractor. We were so satisfied that we ended up giving them the paint job, although this was not in the original plans. I highly recommend their services.

Matt was open to our continuous adjustments to materials and plans. He offered much useful advice without interference with our style preferences. His workmanship and attitude were excellent. Shows up as planned, ready to go. We will hire him for other projects.

We had the guest/ kids upstairs bathroom remodeled and Matt did a great job. He is meticulous in making sure things are done right. We would not hesitate to have him do our next project.

Matt and his team are doing two complete bathroom renovations for us, replacing everything right down to the studs. We usually are DIY types, and this is the first time we've hired out any of our renovation work. Exemplar Carpentry came highly recommended from a co-worker of mine, and we couldn't be happier with their work. Matt listened to our needs and wants, offered great suggestions and tips, and moved quickly from start to finish. Matt and his team are very professional, responsive, dependable, very tidy and they do absolutely beautiful work. We're loving the first bathroom, and are they are working on the second right now, which I'm sure will be just as gorgeous!

We chose and hired Exemplar after we saw the great work they did on my son's house remodel. They provide excellent value for the money. Our project had a lot of finished wood work and this is a specialty of Matt Sayers. Exemplar is not a design-build firm but we knew what we wanted and Matt helped us flesh out the design. Exemplar is easy to work with. I would give them 4.5 stars rating if that was an option.

My wife and I hired Matt to remodel our kitchen, and throughout the entire process Matt has been nothing short of exemplary. To start, he was always easy to reach, whether it was via email, phone, or text. After we had a few larger companies (full "design & build" firms) come out to give us an estimate on our kitchen project, we were almost scared off from doing the project altogether. However we found Matt through Houzz, and figured we'd give him a shot. Right off the bat, his prices seemed much more reasonable. Other reviews, his website, and pictures of past projects gave us good confidence and him, and in the end we could not have been happier hiring Matt to do our project. Our kitchen project may have been one of the most complex kitchen jobs he's taken on, and he handled everything extremely well. Matt and his team took down multiple load-bearing walls, dealt with plumbing issues, a weird roof structure that resulted in Matt having to modify a couple cabinets (home is from the 1950s), a week and a half delay to have our floors refinished, and too many mid-project changes (from my wife and I) to count. And yet, he was very professional about everything, and very upfront about cost and timing impacts. Possibly best of all, Matt clearly has a knack for this line of work. Not only are his carpentry and general remodeling skills of the highest quality, he demonstrated multiple times a good eye for what will look good, and what may not look as nice. He was always willing to do whatever we, the customer, wanted, but every now and then he would say something like "you can definitely do that, but I personally think it would look good if you did this instead..." and every single time he was right. One last point to make - we felt that Matt truly cared about our project. We never felt that our home was "just a job" to him, it always seemed more than that. Case in point, through no fault of his own, we had a major plumbing leak in our basement while he and his team was at our home. He and his team spent the entire day, drenched in water, moving our belongings (including a huge stack of books) upstairs and away from the water. He immediately called the city to send someone out to shut off the water (we had a couple water valves fail, so he couldn't shut it off from the basement), and he called a company to come out and deal with the flooding. Due to his quick actions, our belongings were saved from any severe damage, and the "flooding" ended up being only a minor inconvenience instead of a disaster. Ultimately, hiring Matt to do our kitchen was probably the best decision we made all year. Next up, a bathroom remodel, and we will 100% be sure to have Matt take on that project as well. Exemplar and Matt Sayers crew did an excellent remodel of two full bathrooms in our Brighton, Michigan condo. The attention to detail and quality finishes stand out. We got lucky, we heard about Matt from a tile company we used for a fireplace remodel. We did our homework and went through several quotes, Exemplar seemed like the right choice and we were rewadred with a job well done. Matt and his guys always strive to do the right thing and do the best job possible. I was very happy to see that this was true of everything, not just the finished surfaces. Matt is very knowledgeable and has deep experience in building and renovation. All of the guys work hard to achieve the highest quality. Matt was flexible and willing to work on those little extras that come up during the job. Everything came in on budget and, although there were minor delays, I never felt worried about it because communication was good. I would happily recommend Exemplar to others and contract them for any future job.

We are so happy with our new kitchen! Matt is very meticulous in both his work and the work of his crew, as can be see by the pictures. Communication with Matt throughout the project was excellent. He was prompt in responding to any questions that we had. The cost of the project did not change from the original estimate. Matt even went with me to the tile store to pick out the back splash, and he interceded on our behalf when we had some issues with the company who installed the counter top.

Exemplar Carpentry did a great job finishing our basement. Matt and his team are talented, professional and fast. We would absolutely recommend them to others.
