We hired Katz to undertake a significant renovation of our home, a roughly 3,000 sq ft split-level, and the project ran from March 2023 through March 2025. The scope was extensive: adding approximately 900 sq ft, primarily by building a new second floor over the original primary bedroom to create a new primary suite with views, while also gut-renovating the rest of the house down to the studs. The renovation included complete replacement of electrical and plumbing systems, replacement of all windows, spray foam insulation throughout the exterior walls, expansion of the rear footprint, and updates to all major living spaces. One of the defining challenges was a protected heritage oak tree governed by city regulations. Katz proactively brought in an arborist and worked closely with the city to preserve the tree while shaping the design so the new second story fit beneath it, which speaks to their professionalism and problem-solving approach. Katz also provided design support to help develop the new primary suite while keeping the rest of the house functional and thoughtfully updated without unnecessary changes. They helped future-proof the home by incorporating accessibility-minded features such as a curb-free primary shower and planning for a lift. We were also supported extensively in making finish selections—plumbing fixtures, kitchen design, lighting, tile, flooring, and more—through their recommended designer, Inés Lombardi, who was a joy to work with. Midway through the project, Zack and AC joined the team as project managers. Both were highly organized, proactive, and consistently ahead of issues. Problems were often resolved before we even realized they existed, which made a meaningful difference over the long timeline. Budget awareness was a constant theme throughout the project. Katz ensured we understood the implications of design or material changes and never allowed decisions that would significantly impact the budget without transparency. This approach built trust and helped avoid unpleasant surprises. The quality of the subcontractors Katz works with is outstanding. When an original cabinetry vendor proved unreliable, Katz switched vendors, which paid off tremendously. The cabinetry throughout the home—including the kitchen, multiple bathrooms, and office/library—is exceptional. The plumber was an artist, thoughtfully future-proofing systems, and the flooring team went above and beyond, including carefully matching wood flooring color on site to a showroom selection. On a personal level, Lucy and Joel are wonderful to work with. Lucy makes you feel genuinely cared for, while Joel brings deep expertise and steady leadership. Large renovations are never easy, but working with Katz gave us confidence that quality would not be compromised and issues would be handled professionally. We are extremely happy with our home and would not hesitate to recommend Katz to anyone considering a complex, high-quality renovation.

The Katz team struck the ideal balance for our extensive interior remodel project. They were realistic about the budget and the timeline from the outset--a product of their years of working in Austin--and they brought the work to completion as promised. Katz Builders finished a complete remodel of the interior our home in December 2019. We couldn't find a house that had the kitchen or master bath or closets we wanted so we settled on a house in Circle C that I believed provided the best bones to remodel and get everything that we wanted in our new home. House was built in 1989, I bought it in 2007, knowing it needed work. The previous owners had done some very shoddy DIY work in the kitchen & both bathrooms, plus the paint & carpet needed to be replaced. For a variety of reasons, it wasn't until 2018 that I was ready to attack a remodel--well, It was a case of if one more thing broke, I'd have to move out anyway! (Since I wanted to remodel, I didn't want to bother paying to fix anything I wanted to rip out). But I was stumped about who to get to attack the project of basically building a custom-built home inside my tract home. I found Katz Builders when I went on the 2019 NARI Tour, they had done the work I wanted done at a nearby home & they were in my neighborhood. I've been SO VERY HAPPY I entrusted my home to them. The result has been fabulous & they made the process very bearable, even in the middle of a pandemic! Great work & fantastic people. After hearing everyone's horror stories of various renovations, I had a lot of trepidation, but Lucy, Joel & Greg Katz took fantastic care of me & made all my dreams come true. I cannot thank them enough! I feel I got excellent value what this remodel cost & they made the experience as painless as possible!

I have high expectations for every contractor that works on my home. Over the past ten years we have done greater than $300K in remodels. None have gone as smoothly with as high a quality outcome then our recent remodel with Katz Builders. Katz remodeled our home office at a final cost of $63K. Three things stood out in our project: 1. Katz added great value. Joel and Lucy recommended changes that saved $10K and maintained high quality. There were no surprise change orders. They completed the project under budget. 2. Project management was outstanding. Greg, our project manager, communicated proactively, was on-site daily, tightly scheduled subcontractors to avoid downtime, and completed the project early. 3. Long-standing relationship with subcontractors. The Katz’s have been doing this a long time and they have long-term relationships with their subcontractors. The subcontractors did high quality work in a very timely manner. I especially liked the electrician, plumber and painter. Housekeeping was excellent. I did not pay extra for any of this because the project was competitively bid at the on-set.

We enjoy working with Katz Builders. Such professionals. The attention to detail is evident in everything they do. They are so organized, thorough and have excellent customer service. I was fortunate enough to work on a project with Katz Builders that just recently wrapped up. The process of selecting a builder/contractor is very intimidating and stressful. We suffered through a lot of anxiety and disappointment when researching, interviewing, and attempted just the basic level of communication with various builders. It wasn’t until we met the Katz Builders team that everything fell into place, and visualizing our home was clear on the horizon. The level and quality of attention they gave us was absolutely impressive. We felt important from day one. And most importantly, it never stopped. They maintained a stellar level of professionalism and accountability not only on behalf of Katz Builders but for their trades and contractors. Ours was a complicated house project: 1,000 square foot two bedroom one bath 1940s bungalow in old south central Austin with four giant Heritage Live Oak trees on the lot. Add to that our need to accommodate two growing teenagers and a desperate need for a bigger home to grow into. Fast forward nine-ish months from breaking ground, we have a gorgeous 2,500+ square foot home. We preserved the treasured bungalow look-and-feel from the curb, but walking in the front door reveals a crisp bright and open modern/contemporary/uniquely old Austin vibe home. It’s everything we wanted. Everything. Katz Builders is well organized, the system they use to manage a project works very well. Every step is planned and outlined well in advance and unanticipated (by us) kinks that came up (tree root radius, foundation piers, extensive pre existing framing wood rot, etc) were no surprise to them and they knew how to handle them. Sticking to the timeline and the budget was always of importance and they followed through at every milestone. And most importantly to us, we always felt Katz Builders was on our side. We had a budget, and sometimes our eyes were bigger than what the budget could accommodate. Katz was always there to help guide us and keep us within budget. Their reputation within the trades industries (tile and flooring, interior finishings, plumbing, etc) was impressive and advantageous. Their knowledge within those markets was a major perk for us. Katz’s insures top quality of all their work and guarantees it with a warranty. We consider ourselves very lucky to have worked with Katz Builders. It could have gone so wrong so many times had we not partnered with a competent team like Katz. We absolutely love them and we love our “new old” home.

We recently completed an extensive six figure remodel/refurbish effort and we hired the Katz team to serve as our general contractor. They are outstanding. The Katzes built and updated my parents home, so when it was time for us to make some changes to our builder-grade home in east Austin we didn't even think about calling anyone else. Everyone on the team was amazing to work with through every step of the project. We started out just wanting to put in new windows to bring more light into our living room and quickly found that we also wanted to personalize our kitchen and inject some real personality into the place through electrical, tiling, cabinet work, paneling, and completing overhauling our pantry and kitchen island. You'd think having your entire downstairs out of order with a 10-month-old would be a nightmare, but given the steady, beautiful progress and frequent communication, the 5 weeks of the project just flew by. How do I know they're great contractors to work with? Everything they said would happen, happened, and any changes to schedule were communicated WELL in advance so that there were no surprises in terms of timeline. And when there WERE little surprises, as will always be the case when you start tearing into walls, Greg and his teams took care of them, often only making me aware after the everything was back to good or when there was a "this or that" decision to make! I never once felt like I had to brainstorm or "solve" a problem or feel inconvenienced by changes to the plan. And when I was the one introducing changes to the plan (additions of cabinet painting, changes to electrical scope, etc.), Greg's answer was always "of course!" and he took care of the details from there. It was truly awesome. I can't say enough great things about working with the team at Katz Builders... it was by far one of the very best investments we've ever made, in our home and in our happiness living in it.

We did an extensive renovation of our kitchen, mudroom, laundry room and wet bar. These look into a large family room where we changed the look of the entertainment center and fireplace mantle. The new design included opening up a wall. The rooms look updated, beautiful, and the design has a terrific flow. We also remodeled our master bath and installed beautiful hardwood floors in the master bedroom and a second downstairs bedroom. The project went well. The Katzs were great to work with. They are professional and responsive. We lived in another part of the house while the project was under way and they kept the working areas clean and were respectful and careful with our property and belongings. We hired Joel & Lucy Katz of Katz Builders to add on a children's bedroom, fix major drainage and flooding issues, vent the laundry exhaust to the exterior instead of to a bucket in the garage (yes, this was a thing), as well as general updating of the kitchen and rest of the house. They had quite a challenge in dealing with past remodels to the house that we were unaware of and they handled all of them in a manner which caused us the least amount of stress. The project manager, Corey, understood our main concern (safety) and always kept that at the forefront of his recommendations while still keeping in line with our modern aesthetic. The results were fantastic and the whole experience was as painless as a construction project can be. The best part is, we now have a home that we love and feel very safe in. We've done several smaller scale remodelling projects with other contractors and have had such horrible experiences that we were very nervous about such a big undertaking. The team assembled by the Katzs were hands down the most professional, thorough, and high caliber contractors we've seen. This is a relationship we plan to continue and we wholeheartedly recommend Katz Builders for construction and/or remodeling.

We contracted with Katz Builders to build a covered porch, attached to existing construction. The bidding process took several months, which was frustrating at the time, but the overall process was good and led to a final design that met our needs. The project was completed per schedule and on budget. The Co-construct updates were useful, but ultimately being able to reach out directly to Joel when needed is why we've continued to work with Katz Builders over the years (this is the third time we've worked with Joel & Lucy, including building our home and also for some interior upgrades in 2012). As in the past, the quality of work done by the skilled trades was very high. We are ultimately thrilled and very satisfied with the final product.

Katz Builders helped us in all phases of design and implementation of a major upgrade tour home in Barton Creek Country Club from May to November 2011. The upgrade completely involved adding a wing to the north end of the house to accommodate an elevator, an expanded walk-in pantry a new solid irocha wood center island with warming drawer and integral microwave, a new cooking alcove featuring a chef-quality Wolfe gas-burning stove, Sub Zero refrigerator and a new family room entertainment center. Joel andLucy were wonderful to work with as were all of their subcontractors. The quality of the materials and the exceptional craftsmanship achieved in the upgrade are remarked on by all our family and friends who visit our home. We have been working with the Katz's for about a year now in building our lake house. They have helped us at every turn and are producing a beautiful product. We have had a number of people, both industry professionals and others who have gone through the building process with other contractors, comment on what a good job they are doing for us. They continue to work with us to manage our budget and not have us spend money that is not necessary, but at the same time do all of the little things that will make this house meet our needs. Katz Builders did a job at our home last summer which took about two months. The job involved multiple teams of workers. With the number of crews coming through, I was initially concerned about project plan management, the consistency of the work and the potential for cost overruns. Katz Builders remodeled our country home located on a 20 acres horse farm. Our home was "Texas Style" and needed updating, extra space and a little added elegance. In my mind I wanted what I call "Texas French" with an equine flair, not western or cowboy. After weeks of discussions and drawings we came up with a plan. We expanded the kitchen by removing walls and relocating the laundry room. We relocated the guest bathroom and added a "queen's size" bathroom with a wonderful walk-in closet. We added an attached garage. I love that I can now get in my car without windblown hair and being sprayed by the pool cleaner as I walk to the carport. It is hard to say which addition is my favorite. I love the screened-in porch, the little bedroom fireplace, the new tile floors. My kitchen is awesome and beautiful and the center of entertainment. Hello, I worked with Lucy and Joel and their crew on a beautiful project in Central Austin that backs up to Shoal Creek. They managed the project wonderfully, provided expert advice, and were able to pull off several custom details that the average builder would never have been able to accomplish. Further, this home achieved 5 stars with the Austin Energy Green Building Program and is still performing great. The Owner's called me a year after moving in and said they were incredibly pleased with their electric bill. Under $150/month for a 3,400 s.f. home, during 110 degree Austin Summer Heat! They were really glad to gloat to their business peers who were complaining about their $500 electric bills for smaller homes! Katz builders have a wealth of experience, a willingness to help client's create beautiful custom homes, that perform well beyond expectations, and are very personable. I highly recommend them.

Joel Katz is one of the best builders in Austin. I've worked with him since the early 90's. First on Lakeplace Lane off of Stratford and then on Woodcutters. Both buyers were physicians. Joel added an attic addition for one of the doctors at his cost which significantly increased the value of the home. My wife and I retained Katz Builders to build our home 20+ years ago and have continued to hire Katz Builders on every upgrade and remodel since. We retained Katz Builders to replace the decks, refurbish all the exterior deck handrails, replace all the windows, replace the roof, replace bathroom fixtures, paint the exterior, etc. Most recently we hired Katz Builders to remodel our kitchen. They removed the old cabinets and appliances and helped us design new cabinets and select appropriate appliances. Ultimately they installed the new cabinets, appliances, redid the hardwood floors, and painted the walls. They also worked with us on appropriate countertop, backsplash, and hardware selections. Katz Builders (the whole family) have always done an excellent job and stood behind their work. In an industry that seems to have its share of less than honorable providers, it is comforting to know that the Katz's honor their commitments and are always fair. The Katz Builders team is very professional. We have worked on dozens of projects together over a span of over 25 years (my firm draws the plans and Katz does the construction) and every one of my clients who has used Katz for the construction project has been very pleased with quality, professionalism and service. The level of personal attention and care they provide is unparalleled. In one remodel, for instance, they painstakingly removed the original wood casing from doors and reinstalled it after the remodel was finished. Their tile installer did my own floors and I was extremely impressed with how carefully he and his lead installer planned the layout to make sure that the tile was centered on several different axes as well as ensuring no small slivers of tile at edges and other subtle things I would never have noticed had they done it incorrectly. If something "doesn't seem right" about plans we have provided, the Katz team always call to make sure they get it right rather than "winging it" in the field risking misinterpretation of our intent. They have used many of the same sub-contractors the entire time I have known them which means to me that they have loyal sub-contractors and you will get consistent and high quality results from them. And, once again, I want to mention that in all these years I have not once had a homeowner come back to me and complain about them as their builder. That is very rare in this business.
