New Urban Homes is a boutique residential builder based in Alexandria, Virginia. We build custom homes, whole-home renovations, additions, kitchens, bathrooms, and ADUs in Arlington, McLean, Falls Church, Great Falls, Alexandria, Fairfax, and Washington, D.C. Two brothers, Clayton and Christian Hughes, started the company in 2018 and have grown it almost entirely by word of mouth. One of us runs every project from start to finish. There is no rotating project manager, which is a deliberate limit on how many jobs we take at once. We work on cost-plus contracts. Clients pay documented construction costs plus an agreed builder fee, see actual costs at every draw, and get our vendor discounts passed through at cost. Allowances sit outside our fee, so upgrading cabinetry or tile does not increase what you pay us. Custom homes start at $250 to $275 per square foot all-in, including soft costs and permits. Whole-home renovations range widely and we'd rather assess each project individually than give you misleading information. A custom home takes 14 to 23 months from first meeting to keys, including about three months of permitting. Additions and renovations often take less time, but large additions that trigger an LDA permit can run on a similar time clock as a new home. We build above code minimum in the places you cannot change later. Floors framed to L/480 deflection instead of the code minimum L/360. Three-quarter-inch AdvanTech subfloor instead of standard OSB. Full Schluter waterproofing in every wet area. And every client receives a complete pre-drywall photo record of every pipe, wire, and stud, delivered through their project portal and theirs permanently. We are a good fit for families investing in a long-term home who want it built correctly, including where they cannot see.
