About Us

Ronald Johnston and Associates, Architects is an architectural firm specializing in residential architecture for both private clients and builders. Having practiced in Maryland for over 20 years, Ron's projects include a wide range of both custom and production single family detached homes, multifamily (townhouses), residential renovations, additions and alterations, and active senior housing, as well as the occasional small commercial project. The firm's work also includes approximately 20 new homes or substantial additions located in designated historic districts. Ron is a registered architect in the state of Maryland with almost 20 years in private practice, holds his M.Arch degree from U of M, and is a LEED Accredited Professional. He was awarded a full-term Graduate Fellowship to the University of Maryland School of Architecture, where he served as a student representative to U.M. Facilities Master Planning/Technical Committee, authored a successful research grant proposal to design and build an artificial sky dome to test scale models of daylighting designs, and received the Maryland Architecture Alumni Chapter Award and endowment. Various of his projects have been selected for design awards by the Homebuilder's Association of Maryland or been displayed at the University of Maryland School of Architecture Alumni Gallery Exhibit.

Ron is absolutely wonderful to do work with. I have known Ron for a good many years. It is easy to communicate ideas and thoughts with him. He understands the dynamic of a general contractor building from his print. He is always available to answer questions and is quick when revisions need to be made. I can't say enough good things about working with Ron.

Ron Johnston is the perfect professional to help you imagine, and then lay out in detail, the plans for your construction project. Some years ago, my wife and I decided to substantially expand the size of our home. We were referred to Ron by a friend in the home building industry. Ron worked closely with us, over the course of several afternoons, to come up with plans. When the plans were complete, he provided them to builders for estimates. And when the bank rejected the first design as too expensive, Ron went back to the drawing board with us and put the same time and effort into that process as he originally did to pare the project down to the right size while keeping it something to cherish. Needless to say, the addition was and is fabulous. It met all our needs and vision in a way both practical and elegant. It expanded our house by half again as much and turned it into a dream home. Ron is as excellent a construction partner as one could hope for and I can't recommend him and his professional skill highly enough.

Ron worked with my husband and me on the restructuring of our house plans for our retirement home. We found him to be a competent architect with exemplary ethics. Ron Johnston worked with us over a 8 month design period and provided a fully custom solution that exceed our expectations. It was a very iterative process that required substantial study concepts, coordination with structural engineers and interior designers. We were also fortunate that Ron was well connected with builders and developers, which allowed us to fully execute on the plans. As a long standing commercial developer and builder myself, I was extremely satisfied with Ron's design and coordination skills.
