Sable completed a three-story stair rebuild for me after a previous contractor started the project. The work of the previous contractor was not acceptable and I had to stop the project in progress - Adam was able to come by the same day I called him. My house was already half torn-up, and they managed to fit me into their busy schedule and start work quickly. It was a complicated job in an older downtown house and they did a beautiful job. I would highly recommend them, and will be calling them for any and all future projects on my house.

We engaged Sable to renovate a property for us while we were out of the country. They we were very professional and easy to deal with. The work was completed on time and on budget. Their communication while we were out of country was great. They have been and continue to be a very good company to work with across all the trades.

Sable Building & Design helped us to identify the source of a persistent leak that was causing damage in our heritage home downtown St. John's. They went above and beyond - identifying the source of the problem, and providing us clear information and advice on how to solve the problem once and for all. Their communication was excellent, the quality of their work is impeccable. They provided strong and thoughtful recommendations, their materials are excellent quality and their staff are experienced, reliable and trustworthy. We were thoroughly satisfied with Sable Building and Design's work at our house, and can confirm that there have been no problems since! Excellent company, great to work with! We hired Adam (and crew) to renovate our new clinic space turning it from a yoga studio to health care clinic. They were able to accommodate our tight timeline despite being very busy. They took care of everything from the design stage to finishing work. As soon we had the keys they started and finished in the amount of time they said which is rare for contracting companies. The attention to detail and not having to worry my project was in good hands was worth every penny. I highly recommend Sable for all your building needs!

The Sable team constructed an energy efficient, heritage sensitive house on the site of my old house. The design criteria was very specific in order to blend in with the Georgestown neighborhood. When complete passers by made the comment “nice renovation” which attests to the quality of construction and attention to detail. The City of St John’s recognized the development in May 2022. Sable quality craftsmen have earned a great deal of respect. Heritage appearance - modern energy efficient comfort.

After hearing great reviews from residential clients, and after having visited local businesses renovated/built by Sable, we approached their team to help us build our dream business. They were deeply generous with their knowledge and experience while we were still in the early real estate and planning phases. They were helpfully, friendly, adaptable, and communicative as we navigated the challenging construction and permitting phases. From conception to completion, Sable was a delight to work with, and made the whole process much more enjoyable than it otherwise could have been. They also do beautiful work. They put skill, passion, and care into everything they built for us. Our patrons constantly compliment us our facility’s appearance. We will certainly go back to Sable for future projects, and highly recommend their team for your big projects.

We completely renovated two washrooms and a front entrance. We worked with Adam and his talented staff including Project Manager Bob Sutton. It was a challenging time to undergo a renovation as it was during lockdowns associated with Covid. All employees were very respectful and talented in their specific areas of expertise. A great group to work with. We are really happy with the work they did for us and would not hesitate to work with Sable again.

We hired Adam (Sable Building) to do a full exterior renovation on our “Modern Salt Box”. The project included replacing all the windows (42), replacing the roof, adding exterior insulation, and replacing the clap-board siding. In doing this project it was essential that we maintain a number of specific design characteristics from the original house, in the windows, siding, and trim. Given the scale of the job, we would have been very selective with a builder for this job in any situation. However, in addition to the usual factors, we were even more specific as we currently live out of the country, and were undertaking this project remotely. We were looking for a builder and team that we could completely trust. From our very first interactions with Adam, he was extremely professional. He rapidly addressed our many questions, and provided excellent advice, including providing all necessary details on his recommended methods and materials so we could complete our research remotely. There were some delays in the project startup, however, these were related to the time it took suppliers to provide materials, particularly the windows. The team did take advantage of this time to begin painting the siding, which helped the project proceed efficiently once all materials arrived. Once work started, the project proceeded very smoothly. We were present for ~1 week of the construction (living in the house with our two young children) and Adam and his team were very professional. They rapidly responded to all our questions, and ensured that the house was fully sealed up every night, which was essential as the project was being done in late fall. There were a few additional repairs that they discovered once the original siding came off but, again, the team was very professional. They photographed everything, and clearly communicated with us on any additional work that needed to be done. The finished product was outstanding. All the unique design characteristics that we aimed to preserve were reproduced. The new insulation and windows has significantly improved the energy efficiency of our home. Adam and his team rapidly resolved all our (minor) punch list items. Even close to a year later, they are quick to respond to any questions we may have. We would highly recommend Adam and Sable building to anyone looking for a construction projects of any complexity, and will certainly use them again for any further work we need done.

I hired Sable to overhaul my back garden and could not be happier with the results and the process as a whole. The job involved landscaping and building a new deck plus tear down of the old deck and excavation of an established weed jungle. I have a row house downtown and it was a tricky job to squeeze an excavator in plus time consuming work to bring materials and sod in and out. But the team on the project were total pros. They took pride in their work and were meticulous about cleaning up after themselves at the end of every day. I also found Sable totally transparent in the initial quote and the final bill. I would highly recommend Sable to anyone who wants a good job done and peace of mind about their contractors. And I would call on them again for future projects.

What can we say - Sable is truly a joy to work with. Their wonderful crew and determined work ethic really made a difference when they completely re-sided/re-windowed our home (in the middle of winter no less!). Adam and Doug are great communicators, and because of that you are always in the loop. Being informed of what is going on is so important. Very friendly and professional. We also sincerely appreciate their continued help in maintaining an old home, no matter how small the job. We would happily recommend Sable to anyone looking for an honest and trustworthy contractor.

We’ve had the pleasure of having Sable complete 2 projects for us over the last two years. The first was the replacement of windows in the majority of our home as well as clapboard siding and the second was a restoration of the front of our Victorian-style home. Their professionalism, keen eye for detail and quality work is second to none. There are several reasons why we love working with them: 1. They start work when they said they would start work. 2. They see a job through from beginning to end, without breaking for other projects in the midst of ours which reduces the inconvenience of ongoing renovations interrupting our lives. Without fail, they show up at 8:00 a.m. and leave at 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. And if there is an urgent matter they have to attend to, they call to tell us what’s happening and when they will be back. 3. They know their stuff. They’ve worked on many older homes in downtown St. John’s and they know the challenges they bring and how to keep the true character of the home. The quality of their work is superb and you can trust them to do what they say they’re going to do and take on any extra work/requests without hesitation. 4. They’re very easy to deal with. They quickly respond to any questions and go above and beyond to include us in the process. Whether it’s the general contractor, Adam Steffler-Minty, or the carpenters working at the house, they are an absolute pleasure to work with. Aimee is actually kind of missing having them around the house. 5. They do what they can to keep the project on budget. As with most renovations, especially with old homes, issues get discovered which cause additional costs. Sable will build a bit of wiggle room in the contract to cover these costs and will work with you to make sound decisions based on retifying the issue as well as budget.
