I’m sure you’ve heard all the horror stories associated with contractors; stuff about shoddy jobs, money-hungry contractors, disastrous work crews who leave a mess, work laid out in a contract unfulfilled and beyond. Let me be the first to tell you- that is the exact opposite of what you’ll get when you hire Colin Shaw as your contractor.
I first met Colin and his office manager Marissa one bright spring day (sounds like a set- up for a fictional story, I know…) when I decided to take a walk down to their office on Main Street in Niantic. I had a roof leak that caused some ugliness to the living room ceiling and wall. I was greeted by incredibly warm, friendly, inviting smiles and an adorable dog named Luna! The instant we began to converse about the job(s) I was looking to have done, I knew that I didn’t have to look anywhere else. The positive energy from these two people blew me away (and it still does).
It took no time at all to set up a site visit for him to come out to my home and get back to me with an exceptionally detailed estimate. Already, I was impressed. I hired Colin for a small job and told him point blank that this job was an interview for a much larger scale job I was planning on for later. (But to be honest, I was ready to hire him for the BIG job- the initial meeting was that positive.)
Naturally, he rose to the occasion.
The work performed was timely considering the weather interfering with the roof repair schedule. The two men who came to my house (Jose and Will) were bright with smiles and settled right in to begin work. I was hypnotized from watching Jose’s expertise in drywall and plastering. Will did a phenomenal job assisting (handling prep and clean up). We had friendly conversation while music played and it felt like I just had a couple of friends over who happened to be working on a repair I needed! Every morning I welcomed them back and enjoyed the pleasure of their company. I even felt comfortable enough to leave them alone in my house while I took my sons to and from school.
Of course, when the time came for the big job (complete gut and remodel of the first and second floor of my house) my husband and I met with multiple contractors but none of them could even compare to what I already knew, Colin could bring to the table.
This is what I experienced from the other contenders for the job: site visits, painfully vague estimates (or no estimate at all) which left too much to the imagination, no returned phone calls, and one exceptionally uncomfortable meeting with a contractor and his designer which still leaves me feeling gross.
Perhaps it’s too early for me to write a review simply because the work being done on my house is still currently happening, but I cannot help but boast about how phenomenal these people are.
At times I forget that they are at my house to do a job- not to simply visit me!
Needless to say, we hired Colin again. We had multiple revisions to the contracts to make sure our needs and wants were thoroughly outlined. Colin must have re-written the contract at least 4 times and it was done without complaint. Even as things changed while in the midst of this project Colin has been completely patient and even keeled. He’s always provided us with options of how to fix whatever problem arose and offered his professional opinion of what he would do. Issues were always non-issues really. He’s confident without being arrogant and really knows his stuff and is happy to explain anything you don’t understand until you’re satisfied. Conversations- even work related- never feel that way. Meetings to discuss contracts never feel like mundane meetings. It feels like a social engagement, one that you’re actually looking forward to!
Aaron, Jose, Will and Jay are excellent at what they do. Their attention to detail, the way they work together, the way they joke around and the interactions I’ve seen between them and Colin are solid. Putting a team together as Colin has, is not dumb luck. His crew is a further reflection of himself and the professionalism extends outward. Even the people Colin contracts out for (plumbing, electrical, masonry men, drywall people, and painters have been amazing).
Understand that when you hire Colin and his crew- you are hiring people who will feel like family and in a way, genuinely become a part of your family. They’re trustworthy, available, warm, and respectful. You will find yourself wanting to add to more jobs to the ‘to do’ list just to keep them around. They return phone calls and emails- even at times when you would least expect it (over the weekend, late evenings). They will give you their honest opinions. They are open to discussing anything you could possibly want to do to your house. If you have questions about a tool or what exactly they’re doing, they will answer you. The quality of their work shines through. They treat your house as if it was their own. Seriously, the list goes on.
I have never had the pleasure of working with people who are so responsive, so endearing, and just so amazing. I wish I was a part of that team but for now, I’m happy to be a cheerleader!
