Solid Rock Masonry

I look forward to cold, dark nights since Eric built my masonry heater! I'm going on my seventh winter. I love the warmth and the light, the efficiency, the beauty. I even like hauling my log bundle each night. Eric was so great to work with, shepherding me through the decision-making process and answering all my house contractor's questions. I learned so much from him and am grateful for the wonderful end result.

Eric and the other masons at Solid Rock are true professionals and master craftsmen. They designed and installed a Tulikivi masonry heater for us. The process was absolutely painless. Eric is a man of his word and stands behind his projects. He is uncompromising when it comes to quality. He not only knows masonry, but is an expert in the design of wood-fired heaters, and that experience is priceless since anyone can put stones together, but understanding the design and safety aspects of masonry heaters are what makes projects like this last a lifetime (or more). One of Eric's long time masons (Mike) told me that he "has the best job in the world" and "can't believe I get paid to do this", which speaks a lot about the quality of the people at Solid Rock and the passion that they have for their work. I was initially concerned about having a contractor that I did not know from out of town doing work for us since they are always under pressure to finish up as planned due to overnight expenses in addition to labor expenses. Our project took about a day longer than he had originally planned due to some complications, however they stayed an extra day to finish all the fine details and clean up and did not shortcut or try to skip out before the project was flawless. That is the sign of a true professional. I would happily pay for the 10hr round trip travel time to have him do another masonry project for us.

Pros: Good finished product. Obviously a highly experienced craftsman. Instructive, helpful. Willing to work with you on details and implementation. Good teacher. Watch Points Super busy. Don't expect immediate response. Be clear with what you want and expect, Eric may have suggestions based on his long-term work that may not match what you'd want to do.

Solid Rock Masonry (SRM) goes above and beyond what's necessary to ensure that the homeowner is happy with their custom built stove. I was able to approach Eric with a possible design that would allow for a "heat exchanger" to be tied into my in floor heat. SRM was able to have separate conversations with HVAC installers to make sure they had the proper information on the BTU output of the stove to ensure an accurate heat/plate exchanger, and pressurized system was built.

Eric and his team built an Austrian style Kachelofen for my new house. The workmanship was great, the design was well executed and we did not exceed the budget that we spoke about prior to the build. They worked long hours to complete the project on time. I estimate that our Kachelofen saves us roughly $200 per month on home heating, plus our house is comfortable all winter long. We did have a small issue with our Kachelofen a couple weeks ago and Eric has been very helpful and I am confident together we can come up with a solution. Overall, great people, nice to see that someone still has interest in traditional masonry heaters and possesses a skill that is difficult to find in the United States. I would recommend them to anyone looking at building a masonry heater of any kind. In fact, I hope to soon have him come and build another stove in a cabin.

I hired Solid Rock Masonry to build the core of a Masonry Heater with a grey oven above. Eric, the owner, was very good to work with, very willing to answer questions in the preliminary design stage and has been very helpful after the core was built. Through my interaction with Eric I found him to be very knowledgeable, and the most experience of all masonry builders that I interviewed. The building of the heater went very smoothly. I offered fours stars only because I have not had the opportunity to fully test the heater to its heating capacity. I would recommend Solid Rock Masonry.

Solid Rock Masonry built a large stone fireplace and stone entry pillars for our new home. They were very knowledgeable about the technical requirements of the fireplace and did a very high quality job. Laying smooth native stone in an aesthetically pleasing manner takes a special talent and they did it well.

Eric was great to work with on our masonry heater project. We worked with him to create a heater that works well functionaly as well as aesthetically in our small home. He was totally open to allowing us to complete portions of the project we felt comfortable doing. The heater was completed while we were living in the house and he was was very clean and respectful of our space.

I had Eric at Solid Rock Masonry design and install a custom heater in my new construction house. He did the design at his shop in Duluth, then spent the week at my place building it. He had to coordinate with local contractors working on other projects and build it in a timely manner as others relied on him to wrap up so they could keep working. He did a great job, and we are extremely happy with the heater and his service. He has always been helpful as I call with questions and concerns as I learn to fully heat cleanly, simply and efficiently my 4,000 +/- square feet with wood. I would make this choice again in a heartbeat to have the masonry heater installed, and after 4 years now we still love it as much or more than we every hoped for. Priced similarly to other high end wood burning devices. We calculated that the appliance payback time would be 4 years, so from here on out it saves us money!

We hired Solid Rock Masonry to build us a commercial wood-fired bread oven in 2015. We had an extremely tight timeline and limited budget, but Eric and his crew went out of their way to get the job done on-time. We love the oven, it works exactly as we had hoped, and Solid Rock has continued to provide excellent service even after the project was completed.
