My builder uses Houzz Pro to plan the timeline and give detailed estimates and daily updates with photos of progress, and provide invoices at pre-agreed key points in the build. This made the whole experience much more efficient and stress-free.

About Us

x8 (“Times Eight”) Property and Design is a real estate investment, property management and interior design firm based in Joshua Tree, California run by former HGTV personality Karen McAloon and her producer Mikel Hubbard. Our goal is to create your perfect space to live, work or rent out that’s built around your taste. We want our clients to feel like every project reflects them, not us. Our focus is on creating bespoke desert homes for creative clientele in the high desert, but we also cater to clients in San Francisco and Los Angeles, which is where we reside when we're not bombing around the Mojave. From furniture arrangement consultations to whole house remodels to starting from the ground up, there isn’t anything we can’t handle.

Karen and Mikel helped me design and decorate my new house in West Hollywood. They are fantastic. Karen helped me come up with the new layout for my kitchen, and nailed it. What was once was two small rooms, is now the fabulous heart of the home- a modern, yet classic kitchen with wrap around counters and an island. She made such incredible use of space, every single person who has walked into my home absolutely loves the kitchen. Karen is especially good at getting a clear understanding of my style, and she enhances it and makes it 100 times better. I want to work with her one every house moving forward! She has such great ideas!

I hired x8 when renovating & decorating an apartment that was in a sad state-- purple carpet everywhere, old crumbling wallpaper & outdated lighting....a total mess! Karen worked her magic, advising me where to 'go big' (bold entryway!) and where to dial back the color a little (tiny bedrooms) to create a tranquil vibe. She & Mikel totally got my style & helped me figure out how to get the best bang for my buck with a limited budget. I am so happy with my place & with the super fun, creative & amazing dream team that is x8.

After staying at Karen's air bnb in Joshua Tree, I was so blown away by her gorgeous home, I hired her to come up with a design plan for my fixer. I was worried she wouldn't fit my budget but she was so great listening to my needs and working within my means. She instantly knew what to do simply by looking at pictures of the property. She's a total pro! Not to mention she was so pleasant to work with and available to me every step of the way. I finally found my go-to designer! Highly recommend.
