I met Jim Carter's dad back in 1980. He started the business 71 years ago after he got back from WWII. He was a paragon of honesty and hard work. People still remember him from people who worked with him who have passed on. Jim Carter, who took over his dad's business, gets his reputation partly from his dad's honorable one. His dad could install anything. One time they installed astroturf in a major fashion designer's apartment in SF. Jim remembers installing on a nuclear submarine when he was a teenager. As a former business school professor at Cal Berkeley, I will add some details that impressed me. Carters Flooring just are really the best at what they do. Their installers have been with them forever and have been trained to do anything anyone can imagine, and they do. I have seen their custom work on the fanciest movie theaters, high-class commercial buildings, and regular homes, like the one they did for me. They perfectly installed beautiful carpet and tile flooring at my home in Walnut Creek. Unlike other flooring stores who use people who are unlicensed and pretend they are subcontractors to not have to pay taxes, Carters Flooring has scrupulously always been licensed and insured to the hilt. At one point when they had 25 crews working for them their workman's compensation was $22,000 a month. Because they are almost entirely labor their profit margin is slim.

I've used Carters Flooring on two occasions, and both times they did an amazing job. They were quick, respectful, incredibly easy to work with -- and the quality of their work was excellent. They clearly knew their stuff. And when the job was complete, they left the place clean. We haven't had any problems since then. We would use them again in a heartbeat.

This is truly a professional company that has fantastic customer service. They have years of experience and "can-do" attitudes. I wasn't sure what I wanted in terms of my flooring needs for my home and my studio. They helped me with selection and understanding what each option would mean in terms of use, care and reliability! Can't say enough great things about Carter's. We had them install wall-to-wall carpeting on one floor of our Oakland home. We were so pleased that we asked them back a few months later to carpet another floor as well as stairs. So, now having worked with Carter's twice, I can confidently highly recommend them. The work is meticulous, affordable and timely. They were easy to work with from planning/choosing carpet, to purchasing the carpet, to installation and follow-up. The installation was quick yet thorough and the workmanship was excellent quality. The installers were careful and respectful of our home right down to the clean-up after the installation. Carter's Flooring is the best! I got to see a wide variety of carpets and they ordered any sample I wanted to see in my house. Triss help me find what style and color would work best, she couldn't have made it any easier for me. It looks fabulous!
