BUYER BEWARE – OVERPROMISED AND NOT DELIVERED
Our experience with Harmony Basements and its owner, Diego, was deeply disappointing, stressful, and financially damaging. What initially appeared to be a collaborative and exciting basement renovation project quickly deteriorated into a situation marked by poor communication, lack of transparency, unprofessional conduct, and ultimately what we firmly believe constitutes a breach of contract.
At the outset, we were optimistic. Like many homeowners embarking on a renovation project, we were looking forward to transforming our basement into a functional and well-designed living space. During the initial consultation, Diego presented himself as knowledgeable, confident, and attentive. We had detailed discussions about the scope of work, design elements, and specific features we wanted included. These conversations took place both during his first visit and in follow-up discussions where my husband and I were both present. Based on those interactions, we felt reassured that our expectations were understood and would be reflected in the contract.
Unfortunately, that confidence began to erode very early in the process. From the beginning of our working relationship, my husband had to repeatedly remind Diego to amend the contract to include items that had already been discussed and agreed upon. These were not minor details—they were important elements of the project that directly impacted the functionality and design of the basement. The fact that we had to continuously follow up to ensure the contract accurately reflected prior agreements was concerning and set the tone for what would become a pattern of oversight and lack of accountability.
As the project moved forward, we made a conscious effort to be proactive, respectful, and cooperative clients. We asked reasonable questions about various aspects of the renovation, including a visible crack we had concerns about, as well as general construction details. Our intention was not to challenge or criticize, but rather to better understand the work being done in our home and to ensure that everything was being handled properly.
Instead of receiving clear, professional guidance, we were met with defensive responses. Over time, communication became non existent. What began as delayed responses eventually turned into complete silence. Our questions and concerns went unanswered, leaving us in the dark about important aspects of the project. After 3 weeks of not hearing from Diego or his project manager, we received an email from Harmony Basements pulling out of the project stating "breach of trust."
We would strongly encourage others to carefully consider these factors by keeping track of what Diego (Harmony Basements) agrees to doing, reviewing the contracts carefully and ensuring everything that is agreed upon is reflective in the contract, and inquiring about a process of conflict resolution or a reasonable response time to address any concerns.
We’re thrilled that you felt the professionalism and dedication of our staff, including Diego, Sasha, and Stefany, from the very first meeting. It’s fantastic to know that the process—from securing permits to the final inspection—was seamless and met your expectations.
We’re especially grateful for your kind words about Roy’s leadership and the exceptional work of Julian, the Mtec team, and our other subcontractors. We take great pride in working with certified professionals who share our commitment to quality and excellence.
Your recommendation and recognition of our efforts mean so much to our team. Providing peace of mind to our clients is one of our top priorities, and we’re delighted we could deliver that for you.
Thank you again for your trust and support. We hope you enjoy your newly renovated space for years to come!
Warm regards,
Diego Botia
