Richard was hired by my landlord to replace the ruined sub floor in my house that I rent from her. Richard is the contractor which means he is responsible for everything done in the house, including the work done by the people HE hires. I was displaced for 3 1/2 months because Richard kept lying to my landlord about a completion date. The work included new sub floor, new flooring, all interior baseboards, all interior paint, new tile in bathrooms, and new kitchen cabinets. Not only did it take double the time quoted, he also charged my landlord thousands of dollars more than his estimate. Originally, the dining room (a newer addition) was not going to be renovated. During the process, it was decided that the dining room would be renovated. Instead of giving me an opportunity to empty the dining room of the stuff we had moved in there, the workers moved it themselves. My things were literally thrown into my garage. 8 of my personal items were broken. The beautiful rug I had in the dining room was completely ruined and thrown away. My landlord is having to argue with him about being responsible for these things!! Of course he's responsible! On the day I finally came back home, I noticed two paint spots on my leather love seat (which they had moved out of the dining room and were using as their seating area), and when I asked him if they were going to be able to get those off, he laughed and said, "probably". He could not have cared less about my things. The next day, he sent an electrician over because the hot water heater was not working. The electrician told me he needed a new breaker and that he would call Richard to see what he wanted to do. I texted Richard an hour after the electrician left and he responded that the breaker was only available at a warehouse that would not be open until Monday. This was another lie. I found the breaker at Home Depot, in stock. He just didn't want to pay the electrician for Saturday work because he didn't care. He wasn't missing a hot shower or clean clothes or clean dishes. As we inspected the house, we found multiple unfinished or very carelessly done work. For example, my bedroom door would not close because it was hung at such a slant. He said he couldn't do anything about it because the house was old. This was his excuse for a lot of the bad work. Amazingly, the subcontractors came, listened to me, and were able to fix most of the things on my list! There are so many places where the paint is so poorly done, I have to paint it twice to make it look right. Also, there's a drawer in the brand new kitchen we can't use because it hits the fridge. Also, he thought it was perfectly acceptable to live with a 1/2 inch gap between my brand new counters and the wall! Thankfully, the subcontractors came through again, caulking the gap They had come to do something under the house, but when I showed them and told them that Richard said that was just how it was going to be, they fixed it. It's a lot of caulk but it's better than a gap! The list goes on and on but you get the idea. Richard cares about Richard, not about quality work, not about your things, and not about your comfort.
