Do not work with this construction company. We contracted with BenKee for a four-month project to extend and renovate our existing 3/2 into a 5/4. The project started in March 2021, and was not "completed" (and we say that loosely) until the last week of February 2022. Their team failed to complete a number of projects for which we paid, including the stonework on our fireplace, the backsplash in the kitchen, painting the interior of the garage, the building of the pantry shelves, and other numerous tasks that were on the construction list, for which we ended up having to pay for directly or do ourselves.
They have a long history of non paying their subcontractors - throughout the process, numerous ones informed us that they had stopped doing business with them due to non-payment. Multiple liens were put against our house throughout the project by subcontracting companies working for Ben Kee; this includes a post-completion lien for non-payment of over $2000 owed to Flametech, even after BenKee signed the final paperwork stating that all subcontractors had been paid. Attempts to contact them about this lien (which is still not paid at the date of this writing) and any of the below issues went unanswered.
Their crews damaged our garage door while doing the reconstruction process and promised to fix it. We ended up having to get the lower panel replaced ourselves, plus painted it to match the rest of the garage and house, for a cost of $550. They failed to repaint the interior garage walls after drywall and stucco had to be replaced from water damage that infiltrated and caused mold during the deconstruction. The exterior paint job (which was done by a second-tier sub-contractor after the first painters refused to come back for non-payment of their costs) was poorly done, including missing 4 or 5 areas around drainpipe, windows, and others. We handled this, even though the painters had supposedly been paid to do the full job by BenKee.
The pavers that make up our driveway were left covered in construction debris and rusty scratched areas where the construction dumpster sat. Although BenKee promised to fix it, they did not, and we ended up paying $1150 to have it cleaned and properly treated to get it back to HOA standards.
Because of the extent of our reconstruction, the entire roof had to be replaced (which we figured was a good thing, since it was nearing its lifetime anyway). We paid for a full new roof with BenKee. Though the work was done, it turns out that BenKee filed the WRONG permit for the roof with Brevard County, so now our insurance will not accept it being a new roof. Attempts to contact BenKee on all of these issues fall completely on deaf ears.
