As a developer, I get to know home builders on practically every level. From the process of choosing a builder, to the completion of a home and move-in, I'm involved on some level. I've had the pleasure to work with some fine builders and, unfortunately, some bad ones. Dan DeVol exemplifies what a custom home builder ought to be. Dan is patient and measured throughout the building process. He takes the time to set realistic expectations w his clients and manages those expectations through his own, unique and controlled process. -Dan is a builder. Dan didn't inherit his business, he built it by starting as a trim carpenter and it shows. Dan's building experience started in high school and it shows. Dan understands every aspect of home building and he personally and routinely manages his contractors and inspects his homes.....and he knows how to throw a hammer if need be. -Abliity to keep on schedule and within budget. These are the two areas I get the most complaints from homeowners. In my experience, Dan does a great job on delivering his clients a fine home, on schedule and w in budget. -Technology, keeping ahead of the curve. A stroll through one of Dan's new homes and it's evident that Dan incorporates new technology everywhere. From the newest energy efficient systems, to wireless whole-home control systems, Dan utilizes state of the art technologies and understands and can convey their function. -"Custom" Homebuilding. Dan is a true custom home builder. Artesian craftsmanship, maticulous attention to detail and the ability to access unique and rare materials, puts Dan in an elite group of custom home builders. My wife and I want to commend Dan DeVol Builders for the outstanding custom home they built for us in Bellbrook Ohio. Construction began in October 2013 and was completed, on time in June 2014. His skilled and dedicated subcontractors worked steadily through that very harsh winter to get it all done. The first step was getting a good plan together that incorporated the unusual lot size/shape, conformed to the local housing association covenants/codes and most importantly gave us what we wanted. We selected a Craftsman style, similar to others that Dan has done in the past. He and his designer did a fine job with that, letting us make modifications and warning us against others. Once we agreed on the design, Dan provided a very accurate cost estimate. He also gave us a list of local mortgage brokers he has worked with over the years. We went with Kathy Shaw who was excellent. She got us a very fair building loan and a really good final mortgage. Construction started with the foundation. The foundation guys encountered a significant cavity under the site (an old debris dump). Dan took the time and expense to solve that problem. Our foundation is SOLID. The sump pump almost never goes off. Next up were the Amish framers who worked steadily (and safely) during a very cold winter. Dan was able to pretty closely supervise the construction since he normally has only two to four jobs going at a time. Thus he was able to catch and rectify small errors and deviations from the plan. As building continued we were called upon to make choices: shingle, brick, stone and grout color, tile or wood flooring, electrical and plumbing fixture types and much, much more. It was a lot of work. Be prepared to make lots of decisions if you want a custom home. Some sub-contractors of special note were: the German Baptist cabinet maker (wow); the wood floor guy (hard to get hold of but outstanding workmanship); and the finish carpenters who did exquisite detail work on the front of the house as well as interior work to include the stair case and coffered ceiling. Dan’s brother made our front door and casement. We were able to move in on time. The house has exceeded our expectations. Dan told us to expect/look for problems or discrepancies as we occupied the house. These have been taken care of in the year plus we have lived here. Bottom line: Building a custom home is not an easy process and it’s not for everyone. You get what you want but you have to put in lots of your own effort. But if you’re committed, Dan and his team are really good. They’re easy to work with, do high quality work and give you what you pay for; in other words, EXCELLENT VALUE.

After an unsatisfactory search for a pre-owned house, we bought a lot in our favorite neighborhood and hired Daniel DeVol Custom Builder to build our house. The architecture diagrams were developed to our specifications and unique to our project. The house took about 10 months to build from clearing the property to finish and the entire project was immensely fun. Though it was a lot of work, as the house was custom (i.e., no pre-chosen packages), the process and finished project surpassed our expectations. Mr. DeVol (owner of the company) was great to work with; we had a great working relationship and he worked hard to gain our trust. Trust is such an enormous factor when building a house, particularly your first. His sub-contractor teams (e.g., finish carpenters, masons) were also great to work with. Dan does a great job vetting them and ensuring they working toward a common schedule with high standards. If we could afford to, we'd build a house every 5 years with Dan; it was that rewarding!

We have worked on several stairway projects with Dan and we greatly appreciate his concern for quality. He does whatever it takes to assure the design of the stairway is aesthetically right and demands top quality craftsmanship. He knows and understands the complexities associated with stairways and makes planning and managing multitudes of details relatively easy. It has been a pleasure to work with Dan knowing our product is represented in such a positive manner.

As a supplier, it has been a very easy and very professional relationship with Dan DeVol Builders. Whether it is exchange of critical job-site measurements, or design detail, DeVol is an excellent communicator. In our business, an eye for detail is a necessity, and Dan takes his detail to the highest level!

This was my first time building a custom home. Dan DeVol made the experience absolutely wonderful. He recommended an excellent architect, who was able to design the perfect home for me. Dan was personally involved in every detail of the building process and communicated with me daily (sometimes more). I appreciated that meeting times were always flexible and could accommodate my busy professional schedule. All subs and suppliers offered solutions and were skilled and easy to work with. Above all, I was impressed with Dan's honesty and integrity. There are other builders in the Dayton area who provide a very nice finished product. However, few are as trustworthy as Dan. He knows his business and is a tremendous professional, as well as an excellent human being.

We wanted to completely renovate our master bath to the quality of the rest of our home and Dan Devol was nice enough to take on the project. After a very successful renovation and very trustworthy subs doing high quality work we decided to take down a rarely used screened in porch (just too dirty from the woods) and put up a 2 story addition. We did a lot of custom woodwork that had not been done before by the subs and some custom stone work. The stone work framed a custom wood fireplace in the lower lever and extended on to a adjacent wall from the fireplace on the main floor. From the inside and the outside you can not believe it is a addition. We have never loved our home more. Dan was here every day working or checking up and always available for questions. He is very easy to work with and completely trustworthy.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dan DeVol for over twenty years. As founder and landscape designer at Grandma’s Gardens and Landscape, I have worked together with Dan on many amazing projects. Dan’s early roots as a fine finish carpenter and his eye for minute detail have positioned him as one of our regions finest builders. Dan has a friendly, hands-on approach to fine home construction, and enjoys using the latest and greatest home construction and management software. He creates timelines to keep his clients informed and his contractors on task, allowing for a seamless project, and always uses a team approach, seeking input and advice from his subcontractors to create a better final product. We recently had our lower level finished by Dan DeVol Custom Builders. We chose Dan DeVol as we have seen some of the homes he has completed in the past. His work is top quality, and many people in our area have recommended him. I met him several times in the community, and found him to be very personable and friendly. Our experience was truly outstanding. The construction process went smoothly from the time we discussed our plans up to the finishing touches. He was always accessible and happy to communicate. He used an online program called Co-Construct that helped us stay organized with each step of the construction process. He guided us along the way and remained patient with us when we had difficulty making decisions. He took his time meeting with us when we needed him, and never appeared to be in a hurry. We were his top priority at all times. Dan is a great listener, and made sure everything was done to our satisfaction. His choice of subs was also excellent. They were very talented with their skills and of high quality. They were friendly and had a great working relationship with Dan. Many of the subs told us, “He is the best”…”He’s a great guy”. We thoroughly enjoyed our building project with Dan. We were inspired by pictures posted on Houzz, (which Dan recommended), and now we have a lower level that can be featured as well. Dan made our dreams a reality. His craftsmanship, talent, and character are top notch. We would recommend him to anyone looking to build a new home, or improve an existing one. We met Dan Devol during the 2004 Homearama. We had already purchased our lot and were looking for a builder who valued quality, details and willing to work with us throughout the building process. Dan’s Homearama home got our attention, the style and quality was exactly what we envisioned for our home. We met with Dan several times over the next 2 years refining the design and searching for cost efficient ways to achieve what we wanted within our budget. The construction of our home began in January of 2006 and was completed in December that same year. From start to finish Dan was always available to meet with us to discuss any questions or concerns we had about our new home construction. He helped us decide on finishing details and sourcing specific items we were having difficulty finding. During the construction we made what we thought might be a major change relocating the fireplace in the great room. Since we were working closely with Dan during the entire process, bouncing ideas wants and needs we discovered this change early enough in the process that it was no big deal. We truly appreciated Dan working with us and not incurring huge change orders for some of the modifications and refinements we identified during the building process. Dan has built a strong reputation in southern Ohio as one of the premier custom homebuilders. We would highly recommend him if you want a great home building experience. We still stay in contact with Dan today, value his advice and would certainly build with him again and we love our custom designed front door crafted by his brother.
