We purchased our home from Doug with HD Bailey Homes in May 2019. When we first met Doug, he was very friendly and represented his company well. He showed us the house in detail and explained the work that had been completed so far. The home had previously been under contract, but the previous buyers backed out during construction. At the time I didn’t think much of that, but looking back now I understand why.
When we first looked at the home, it was still unfinished. We made an offer in February and were told the home would be completed by mid-March since it only needed flooring and a few finishing touches. We were given the option to choose the flooring and change some fixtures because they had not yet been installed. Unfortunately, the flooring that was installed was not the same as the flooring we were originally shown.
When mid-March arrived, the home was still not finished. We were then told it would be ready by April 1st. April 1st came and went, and the home was still incomplete. After going back and forth several times, we finally accepted that the house would not be finished on the original timeline.
During our final walkthrough, we flagged several issues that we wanted addressed before closing. Doug assured us these would be taken care of before closing, which was scheduled just two days later. When we arrived at closing, Doug had already come earlier and completed his portion of the paperwork. The attorney informed us that there were issues with liens on the property that needed to be resolved. After several hours, those issues were cleared and we were told everything was complete.
Once we received the keys and went back to the house, we discovered that the items we had requested during the walkthrough had not been completed. I called Doug and he told me his painter was working at the house next door and that he would send him over. The painter never came. The next day I saw the painter and asked when he would be coming to fix the issues. He told me Doug had never asked him to do any work at our house.
I attempted to contact Doug again but received no response. Our paperwork stated that he would cover any imperfections in the home for up to one year. Within the first week we noticed the floors squeaked when walking on them, and cracks and nail pops began appearing in the drywall. For six months I attempted to reach Doug about these issues but was never able to get a response.
Later, when I noticed he was finishing another house nearby, I approached him in person and asked if he would come address the issues with our home. He told me he would come the next day. The next day came and went, and he never showed up or answered calls.
At that point I gave up and repaired the issues myself. The other two homes he built nearby experienced similar problems, and their owners also had difficulty getting him to come back and address the issues.
Based on our experience, communication and follow-through after the sale were extremely disappointing.
