Quite simply, people want to do business with people they know, like and trust. We can say that our experience with Tryon Homes hit the mark on all three. As we went through the design process with our architects, we faced the daunting prospect of finding just the right builder to construct the home of our dreams, having heard every horror story imaginable from friends and family about their own tortuous remodel or new construction experience with residential builders. Now that we are in our completed home, we can say that that the design and construction experience was nothing short of wonderful, thanks to Phillip Tryon. Selecting Tryon Homes makes us feel like we drafted the All Star MVP to build our home.
Based on our amazing journey with Phillip Tryon, we recommend Tryon Homes unconditionally. He is a man of great character and skill who blends passion for his trade with an uncanny ability to listen to the needs and wants of his clients and deliver exactly the home desired. Through knowing him, we’ve gained not only the home of our dreams, impeccably built, but a lifelong friend as well.
Picking the right builder is the most important decision you will make to ensure the success of your home build/remodel/renovation project, but doing so is not an easy process. Choosing the right builder will make the project engaging, low-stress and rewarding in terms of quality, cost and schedule; picking the wrong builder will yield exactly the opposite result. Unfortunately, many folks focus primarily on lowest cost, not understanding that economy promised up front rarely translates into lowest finished cost or desired quality. What you may pay in modest premiums (if any) yields powerful returns and ensures that your project is successfully delivered to your expectations (or better) in terms of quality, overall cost and time of delivery. You don’t get to do this very often in your life so picking the right team is critical.
During an early design meeting, our architects, Kathleen Reardon and Susannah Devine, suggested that Tryon Homes LLC would be the right builder for us. When questioned why they thought so, they replied candidly, “Because Phillip Tryon is the only person we know who is more obsessive about details than we are.” Coming from top-notch designers, that was quite an endorsement, so we met with Phillip to discuss his qualifications and availability to build our home. We connected with Phillip quickly, did a deep dive on his experience and references, and concluded that he was the right builder for us. It was a leap of faith at the time, but the best decision we made on our home rebuild project.
Having worked with Phillip for over two years (six months of design and a year and a half of construction), we can attest to the full spectrum of qualities that impress us about him.
When considering the qualities that make Tryon Homes a builder of distinction, integrity is at the top of the list simply because it is so fundamental to a good working relationship between builder and client, design team and subcontractors. We trust Phillip explicitly because we’ve seen proof of his integrity a thousand times, in ways large and small. It forms the core of who he is both personally and professionally, and everything he does is built on its foundation. In matters of truth we trust him wholly, a vital quality in any relationship.
Communication is the key to any successful project, and we witnessed firsthand how Phillip excels at developing and maintaining strong lines of communication at every level. From initial consultations with our lender, myriad meetings with architects and engineers, vendors, subcontractors, consultants, through the final punch-list and closeout items, he communicated at a high level with everyone. As important as technical content was, though, we were equally impressed with how his personality made communication much easier, preferring as he does a genuinely friendly, non-confrontational and collaborative style. There were times when difficult news needed to be conveyed, but he was as calm, candid and forthright in discussing tough issues and seeking solutions as he was in in everyday conversation.
Another characteristic that distinguishes Tryon Homes is its unyielding commitment to quality. Phillip always does what’s right, not just easy, resulting in a home that is built safe, strong, secure and to code, in addition to being beautiful. Almost daily, throughout the construction process, we watched in awe as Phillip's impressive technical expertise was brought to bear on every aspect of the project, large and small. From protecting the legacy trees on the lot to double checking engineering calculations during the forming and pouring of the foundation to detailed coordination with all trades to ensure that the house was being built to specifications, no detail escaped him. His laser focus on quality flows through to the subcontractors he typically uses, who push each other to better their work so that it will meet the high bar of Phillip’s expectations.
A key factor in ensuring that a home is built according to specifications (and the client’s expectations) is being on site continuously during construction, which Tryon Homes excelled at. He was the complete antithesis of the “drive by” builder. Following demolition, he set up an office on our lot, then moved onto the slab when it was poured, then into various parts of the house as they were built. The advantages of having Phillip on site each and every day were powerful, providing him with accessibility for his subcontractors, the consultant team and us. He could spot actual and potential coordination issues, maintain high quality control standards, and was able to provide rapid feedback and responses to questions, crucial to maintaining schedule.
Another characteristic that distinguishes Phillip is his always-positive can-do attitude with which he approaches everything. We wanted a completely custom home with few standard details, so it was gratifying to see him embrace the innumerable challenges we threw at him with enthusiasm and a powerful desire to not just meet but to exceed our expectations. This is a character trait you’re born with: you’re either a “high challenge” personality or not, and he is definitely on the “high challenge” end of the personality spectrum, which is good news for his clients. His enthusiasm is infectious, which made every stage of the project fun for us.
As is usually the case in life, you get what you pay for. While we might have found a slightly lower cost alternative to Tryon Homes, we’re positive that our journey would not have been as joyous and magical as it was, and know in our heart of hearts that we would not be living in the stunningly perfect home that Phillip built for us, a home built with professionalism, dedication, collaboration and, above all, love.
