About Us
Gardens... Not Just Landscaping
Besides being a frame for one’s house or a problem to be solved, a garden is much more than landscaping. It is a living, growing, changing collection of plants and outdoor surfaces that link the homeowner emotionally to the property. A certain flower or its fragrance, the crunch of gravel underfoot, the sound of a fountain, a handful of warm ripe tomatoes, an encircling hedge of evergreens sheltering songbirds -- any of these choices turn each garden into very a personal space – an outdoor room individually tailored to the owner’s senses. When we begin to think of landscaping in these terms, we are making a garden.

Shortly into my initial consultation with Ellen from What's Blooming, I knew I had finally found the landscaper I wanted to work with. I had interviewed several landscapers previously and even went so far as to have plans drawn, but the plans never really captured what I was looking for. Ellen's spontaneous suggestions and ideas were spot on. The plans arrived within a week. Ellen and Tracy's ideas were so creative and exciting. There was a wonderful ease in our discussions about the plans. All questions, doubts, and concerns about the plantings and costs involved were answered with candor and directness. They easily won my trust.
The actual implementation of the plan was flawless. Ellen and Tracy have an amazing team of workers. The whole team made it clear they wanted us to be happy. I felt included in decision making at all times. Ellen and Tracy were great problem solvers and kept perfecting the project as it progressed. Their experience landscaping and working with their team for so many years made it such a joy to work with them. Their artistry and top notch customer service is unmatched.

Ellen and Tracy were fantastic from design to execution. Ellen first worked on a detailed drawing of the landscape plan showing where every plant would go and explaining why she chose a plant versus another (e.g., shady area versus sunnier area, etc.). She shared pictures of all plants and shrubs and had various ideas that resulted in a beautiful garden. One ask we had was that we wanted to enjoy different blooms throughout the different seasons - and we had flowers blooming throughout December through February. They were a joy to see every time I drove up my driveway. Ellen was also wonderful in saving existing mature plants and incorporating them n the overall design.

Thank you, Anna! We are looking forward to adding more to your garden in the spring and summer to extend the blooming times even more.
The job: taming the backyard jungle of trumpet vine and assorted things I couldn't get on top of. In desperation, I called What's Blooming, and now my problem is solved. Ellen and Tracy (and their crew) did a great job of clearing out, but they also made a plan for my future garden.
They used what I had, analyzed my soil, sun, and deer situation, and created a thoughtful design that I could maintain. They added small touches (more bulbs and smaller plants) and large ones (transplanted some bushes that were in the wrong places), and they just brought the whole look together.
Ellen and Tracy are so easy to work with. Even my small job (which seemed huge to me) was welcomed. They listen and think about what's good for each individual garden. And they have a terrific crew, who are punctual, neat, and professional.
I recommend them without reservation.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I really enjoy tackling an overgrown garden and finding hidden treasures underneath; dividing huge clumps of ferns and other “lost” perennials. Our goal was to encourage visiting birds, bees and butterflies while we tried to discourage the inevitable deer.

I wanted to share our great experience with What’s Blooming. Ellen and Tracy provide creative garden ideas, “out of the box” landscaping and do an immaculate job! They are just not your typical landscapers but they work closely with you to create a custom design and plan for your yard.
When they transformed our front and backyard this fall they carefully chose the plants based on our taste, yard size, and our commitment to care and also made sure they selected plants that bloom at different times of the year so our yard always looks interesting. They also helped us to get rid of huge groundhog holes in our backyard, laid new sod and planted a tree. Our schedule and the plan changed several times throughout the project but they were always so helpful, flexible and fantastic to work with. We love our new yard and will keep on working with them in the spring. Highly recommended!

Thanks, Katri. And it has been fun working with you these past years, watching your children grow along with your garden.
Ellen, Tracy & the team at What’s Blooming were amazing to work with! Ellen sat with me and reviewed the best options for my garden, being sure to ask what I like/dislike, and skillfully designed a beautiful layout for me. Installation was timely and efficient; the team works together beautifully and are very considerate of the homeowner. Tracy went above and beyond to solve a pre-existing sprinkler issue, and followed up months after to be sure it was working correctly. I can honestly say that after living in my home for 20 years I FINALLY love my landscaping!

After having worked with What's Blooming for over 20 years on a treasured garden in the Heights of Ridgewood , and it came time for us to downsize to HoHoKus, I couldn't imagine starting a new garden without their help.
Ellen and Tracy helped me to turn a very traditional already established landscape to exactly my style in just two growing seasons. As I wasn't quite sure of how to proceed, we started with just a few garden pots, which they turn into pure art. Transplanting prized specimens and adding perennial touches have made me feel as if I've lived here all my life. They just know how to make magic happen.

Lovely mother daughter team who work with you to plan and execute your garden. They improved my garden so that it is a place I love to look at and spend time reading and relaxing. The gentleman that work with them to dig and plans are also very neat and polite. All in all a pleasure to work with.

I hired this wonderful mother-daughter team (along with their exceptionally dedicated workers) based on the stand-out work they had done around town. Their landscaping was always distinctive, balanced, and graceful, enhancing each individual property in subtle and unique ways. It wasn't until we started working together, that I realized it took more than their fine aesthetic sense to achieve these results. They have extraordinary listening and observational skills, which enable them to figure out the perfect garden and plantings for a particular home and for the people who live in that home. Their knowledge of plants, and horticulture in general, is beyond impressive, and when you add a strong work ethic with fair and honest pricing, you have a winning combination. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have discovered such pleasant and talented people to help me make my house a home!

The mother (Ellen) and daughter (Tracy) team and their co-workers have been keeping my gardens beautiful every year since 2005. They are very knowledgeable about what plants will do well in the various parts -- shady and sunny -- of the garden, and have a great eye for color and the harmony of different plantings. In addition, Tracy is very skilled at dealing with such issues such as how to handle drainage and run-off. They are willing to do as little or as much as I ask them to do -- from just cleaning up and planting annuals in the spring to periodic maintenance throughout the summer. They are always responsive to my calls and requests -- I cannot remember ever having them not return a phone call or email -- and are extraordinarily pleasant to deal with. I think if they ever go out of business I shall have to move to an apartment!

Thank you, Margot. We have worked together for nearly 20 years, fighting deer, shade, challenging drainage problems and poison ivy and its been a privilege and a pleasure to find ways to meet those challenges and give you a pretty garden to enjoy. Looking forward to more years together!

Ellen and Tracey and their what’s blooming team are passionate and great at what they do. I told them what look I wanted and they made great suggestions for different flowers and plants I could use to help achieve my beautiful garden. They shopped multiple nurseries to make sure they were getting the very best. They are detail oriented and made everything so perfect. Very kind, helpful and easy to work with. I will use them again and highly recommend.

We had a wonderful experience with Ellen and Tracy. Ellen spent so much time with me going over my wishes and dozens of inspiration photos for a complete garden renovation. She selects only the best plants and all of her work is amazing!
