Cascade Custom Homes & Design

We used Houzz to identify a design/build company to help us with our home construction project. The reviews were spot on. Cascade Custom Homes hit all the things important to us including: creativity, price, responsiveness, follow through and quality. We love the design and flow of our home and get lots of compliments on it as well. For a smaller home, it feels spacious and there are no wasted areas. Little things that we didn't even think of, have added to the aesthetics and we haven't found one thing we would've done differently. All the vendors and subcontractors were professional and easy to work with. And the whole team at Cascade Custom Homes was amazing! Couldn't have asked for a better first experience with building a home.

Our team from Cascade did a wonderful job of transforming a rather funky house into a cohesive and comfortable home. We thoroughly enjoyed everyone who worked on our project. They were hardworking and creative and listened to our concerns and desires for the successful end result of our home. We especially enjoyed our project manager, Jay Roberts, whom we spent a great deal of time with. He kept things moving along and suggested creative and cost saving solutions. We also were incredibly impressed with the framers, roofers, sheet rock installers, finish carpenters, electricians, flooring installers, stone mason, tile installers, painters and cabinetry installer. The end result of our association with Cascade Custom homes has led us to refer others to them. We thoroughly love our View Road home. Thank you, Jon, for assembling such a competent team to transform our fixer-upper into our dream home.

Showed up eager and excited. It was like pulling teeth to get them to take my money, I called and called, and then finally drove down there to their office where they couldn’t ignore my calls. Paid them a third of the design fee right there to show them how serious we were. Set a budget, I communicated everything and it took them 4 months to produce a design with our immediate feedback on loose and rough designs. Had to follow up routinely to get any communication back in regards to the status of the design multiple emails sent with sometime weeks without a response. Deadlines, contractual or verbal, to provide a product back to me and my wife were consistently well past due with more than generous timeframe to begin with. We even went to the bank they recommended for financing because they have been doing business with that bank for years the same week we began working with them.... When they finally provided a bid and solid blueprint the bid came in at more than twice the budget, close to $600k, this was 4 and half months from initial payment. Once we took a second hard credit hit to extend our financing approval, at the 6-month mark, from the bank while waiting on a design and bid from Cascade Custom Homes, they finally decided to make our project a “priority”. The second attempt at a design was full of little things that were previously discussed about either not including or including, and was opposite of the majority those clearly communicated desires, and the design provided was a blatant rushed product that completely missed the mark after 6 months of trying to get them to treat us like a customer. My wife and I worked really hard to design our own floor plans and blueprints to make sure our vision was more than clearly communicated, we spent days, weeks, and hours doing work that they probably should have been doing. We were doing it only to try and make things move at a faster pace, and when the bid came back more than double our budget we made every effort to remove things from the design and lower the budget closer to something more realistic in price, he even suggested that we do our own demolition which we almost entertained but were advised by them to be careful that the bank doesn’t find out or they will want an estimate for the work we would be doing for ourselves, seems a bit shady. The last rough design that had completely missed the mark was maybe a day away from having a bid completed and delivered to us, I quickly sent an email to make sure that they wouldn’t take any more steps towards completing a bid to that design because of how far off we were from something that my wife and I could justify spending $250-300K on. That was our last communication, he has not reached out since to try to make things right or work with us in anyway. He did however, send a bill for close to $3,000. It's a good thing that the contract that we signed in February of 2019 that gave them a deadline of 60 days to have an accepted bid and design to us was not met. Breach of contract. Broken promises, terrible communication, late products, rushed products, zero reliability, and just plain poor customer service over and over again, and we hung in there believing that they probably were just spread too thin and had a lot going on and at some point our end goal would be met with the quality craftsmanship and organization they are known to provide even though it would be well past the timeline we were hoping for. We were more than willing to work with them and we bent and adapted and adjusted our vision and patience for over 6 months, but getting them to work, communicate, or respond to emails or phone calls was next to impossible. I left for deployment at the beginning of April and moved my tenants out of the house so it could be worked on while I was gone. We gutted the house in preparation for the construction which was promised to be started at the end of May 2019, with the house being finished 11 months from the end of February 2019. What we are left with is $3000 missing from our pockets, a $3000 bill, hours and hours of time spent working floor plans and blue prints trying to speed up the process that we won’t get back, and a house that was once a rentable asset that provided income for our family that is now uninhabitable. We went to Cascade Custom Homes because of their reputation and quality work. I'm afraid that they may have forgotten about the practices that built that reputation, spread themselves too thin, and started making promises they can’t keep because, well, business had been good. Hire at your own risk. Hopefully they understand that this type of behavior from any company is unacceptable, but especially unacceptable from a local company TO local Island County/Washington lifelong residents that support local businesses over the “Walmart’s” of the island.

Jon and his team are the best! For design work, Jon came out and gave us great options in about 5 minutes after looking at our project. The team arrived when they said they would, finished the work in a professional workmanlike manner. The kitchen remodel was completed in about 5 weeks, which is quite quickly for a gut to the studs to new everything. It seemed longer because we were "camping" in the rec room with a bar sink, and hot plate, but pretty fast in construction terms. The project cost what the quote said it would cost. I would recommend this firm to anyone who is looking for a design/build firm.

Integrity, creativity, faithful, and knowledgeable... Cascade Custom Homes is family owned, based in this area, and have a full understanding of the area's unique gifts, challenges, and building process. They built our custom home 17 years ago and we are still well pleased. We are adding new ideas to our home and have currently hired Cascade Custom Homes for the remodel.

We hired Cascade Custom Homes to build a new front porch on our home, cover a portion of the back deck, install a new roof and gutters, modify the front door entrance and build some porch rails. They then painted the entire home. We found Jon and Jay throughout the process very professional, open and honest. They went out of there way to work around the frequent delays caused by our very unusual fall weather. They met there estimates as to the work done other than the total cost increased due to an unexpected need to replace siding on one side of our home as well as some confusion over the gutters we wanted. There work quality was awesome! Their carpenter who built the porch, replaced the siding, etc., was a real artist! We would not hesitate to hire them again! Finally, we solicited bids from several other contractors on the island before hiring Cascade Homes. They by far had the lowest bid, a win-win situation for us!

My husband and I had a view lot for a few years before we decided that we were finally at a point in our lives to build. We contacted Cascade Custom Homes after researching their website and seeing several homes they constructed, and we met with Jon Roberts, the architect. We had some ideas that he helped us develop, always listening to our particular wants and needs. We were far along in our plans when a family setback forced us to stop the process. Jon was understanding and gracious and assured us that our plans would not be scrapped and that we could resume at any time. A few years later we started again. We resumed our dream and after plans were well established ready to be submitted for approval from the county, another and worse crisis occurred in our lives and we stopped moving forward again. As stunned as Jon was, he was again supportive of our decision to halt the project. Several years passed and although we would never recover completely from the disastrous blow we had been dealt, we also knew that building our home was going to be part of our healing. We were reluctant to call Jon thinking that he wouldn't want us as clients again after two false starts, but once we talked with him, our fears were never realized. We resumed where we left off. Jon worked extremely hard to keep our design well within our financial parameters without sacrificing our standards. We finally finished the planning stage. Then we were handed over to Jay Roberts, the builder. We were sure we wouldn't like Jay as much as we liked Jon...but we were wrong. Jay was our captain, our confident, our "no question is too small" guy, the crisis interventionist, and all around great person to work with. He answered every question with knowledge and confidence. We had changes we wanted to be made, and Jay took care of the changes as if we were family. That is how you will be treated....like family. He never treated our questions as being trivial and handled us and our concerns very patiently. We were out of state a lot of the time and we trusted Jay to make the day to day decisions for us long distance. We were not disappointed. The house was finished on time except for a few last minute touches; the people hired to do the floors, fireplace, deck, painting, all the electrical, plumbing, excavating, etc. were great. No complaints. The workers employed to do the finishing touches were all experienced artists. Our project went beyond our original price range, but that was because we changed some things.....made our deck bigger, invested in more expensive stone....not due to any problems or mistakes made by Cascade. Jay actually pointed out things that were unnecessary and very pricy to keep us on budget. To make a long story short, if you are looking for an objective review to read....sorry. We can't be objective. We had a great experience with a very professional company with owners who go the extra mile to make sure you get what you pay for. I would recommend Cascade Custom Homes to anyone with no hesitation at all. It will be a wonderful experience for anyone who wants to share the experience of building a home with a great team working beside them. Our home is beautiful, the workmanship is first class and is the building is structurally sound and solid. Thank you Cascade Custom Homes.

We have used Cascade Custom Homes twice and have been pleased above expectations. The Work Supervisor Larry Mason kept things on schedule and went above and beyond to ensure our remodel was perfect. Shout out to 1-2-3 Construction and Oak Harbor Drywall for excellent work as well as Brushworks NW, Pacific NW Trim and Whidbey Island Plumbing.

Jon Roberts of Cascade Homes & Design developed the plans for our new home. He was always took his time to listen to our thoughts and implemented them into the plans. He was quite easy to work with. His team was supportive as well. The construction foreman, Larry, made sure everything was done correctly and the jobsite was always kept clean. Their subcontractors were always pleasant and helpful, too. Recommendation is given without qualification.

Jon Roberts and his team at Cascade Custom Homes & Design remodeled the interior of our Coupeville, WA, 1000 sq. ft. “Mom & Pops” cottage on West Beach in February 2016. Jon integrated our ideas in a perfect remodel that maximized our living space, included features that would address our needs as senior citizens, and tied our theme of “beach & forest” together, making the entire cottage a beautiful, warm, and cozy place. Our project manager, Larry Mason, masterfully orchestrated his various building specialists every day, and he communicated with us continually. His specialists were all tried-and-true craftsmen, who took pride in their work.
