Spencer Howard Design + Construction Management

Spencer Howard is a fantastic collaborator. We have worked together on a historic renovation project for the last two years and we have been thrilled with his encyclopedic knowledge of historic architecture in Houston. He helped us craft a proposal that was approved and endorsed by the Houston Architectural Historic Commission--we couldn't have done it without him! He is not an ego-driven designer which makes him easy and pleasant to work with on projects. I highly recommend him and his company!

Spencer has been to our house on several occasions to discuss our home renovation. We have a small bungalow in the Heights and his ideas not only suit the area, they suit us perfectly. Even though we are just beginning our adventure in home renovation, we feel we are in great hands with Spencer. Heck, even now, instead of making some crucial decisions, my husband and I both just say "We'll ask Spencer what he thinks" and then the world is right again. He knows the area. He knows what looks good and he knows what will work and what will not work. He doesn't sugar coat, but he is very accommodating. He was one of several options we had for architects and I very happy we chose him above all the rest.

We are working with Spencer Howard to completely remodel our 1920's craftsman duplex, including converting the duplex to a single family home, building out a second story in the attic, and adding a porch/laundry/mudroom to the back. We feel great about our decision to work with Spencer. We live in a historic district, so his experience navigating the Historic Commission process has been invaluable. He listens to our wants, and finds creative ways to meet and exceed our expectations. His design for the attic addition hit all of our must haves, maximizing square footage, while maintaining the historic integrity of the home. Spencer's expertise in construction has also been a significant help to us, as we are planning to do a good portion of the remodel ourselves. He has provided excellent guidance on how we can retain the original details that give our home character. Spencer understands our vision for the home, and shares our excitement in the project. We're glad we found the right professional who really 'gets it'.

Spencer Howard is completing designs for our historical home. He is thorough, creative and sensitive to historical preservation. We appreciate his knowledge and attention to detail. He listened very carefully to our wants/needs. We know this, because his design was almost exactly as we described. The suggestions that differed from our requests reflected his careful consideration to usability and function, so we understood and appreciated his patient explanation of work.

We hired Mr. Howard to design a total rennovation of a property in an historic district but which, itself, had not been of significant historic significance and which had, over time, been changed so it no longer conformed to the general period look of the street. Mr. Howard met with us before beginning the design process, presented the original design, incorporated our ideas and concerns based on the first presentation, finalized the design drawings and met with the HAHC council to present the project and explain the design and conformity to the neighborhood 1920's look plus answer any and all concerns posed by the council members. Further, Mr. Howard met with the contractors we had contacted to be sure the designs were understood plus meeting with the final two contractors to assist us in comparing apples with apples plus look for ways to economize (the project will cost more than we spend purchasing the property). Throughout the entire process, from initial visualizations through final contractor decision, Mr. Howard has taken our ideas and desires and put them into a well thought and well designed final productwhich won the Historic Commission approval plus offering knowledgeable support throughout.

We hired Spencer Howard to oversee a complete remodel of our 1908 home. We have worked with many professionals over the years on this project and others, but hands down Spencer tops our list in terms of professionalism, talent, personality, and affordability. He really listened to what we were looking for, captured what was most important to us in his designs, and he was an effective advocate on our behalf with our general contractor and subcontractors. It was refreshing to work with someone who was always thinking ahead, and who was always quick to offer a solution rather than spending time lamenting that there was a problem. Spencer also really honored the quirky things that were important to us as homeowners. That was refreshing, as other construction professionals we have worked with had a tendency to impose their taste, or tried to steer us towards "what everyone else is doing" without real regard for our preferences.

My husband and I hired Spencer Howard to draw up plans for an extensive remodel to our home as well as for new construction of a garage and pool pavillion. The remodel included our kitchen, family room, master bathroom and enclosing a breezeway to make a butler's pantry. We found Spencer to be very creative, professional and easy to work with.

Spencer Howard has been an unbelievable resource on the remodel that we worked on together. His ability to convey key architectural design concepts and guide the direction of the project has been indispensable. The wealth of experience clearly shined through on every aspect of the remodel.
