10 Fabulous Fabrics and Textiles for your Home

There are so many different fabrics that you can use in your home. Just looking around my own living room I see several different types of cotton, velvet, yarn and silk used around the home.

Of course, some fabrics are more powerful than others. Thicker fabrics evoke a different ambience than light fabrics. Woven fabrics feel different than silk fabrics.

If you want to be able to control the effect that your home has then you need to understand the differences between some of the major fabrics. This ideabook looks at ten popular fabrics and how they may be used in the home.

Gingham. Finally we have this great fabric that is a must for any home influenced by country design. I love the freshness of this pink gingham and am also a fan of purple gingham but more traditional colors obviously work as well.

Paisley. Who doesn't love a great paisley design? It's widely used in the home for everything from blankets to wallpaper (as we see here). It traditionally has a Persian or Indian background, which can be replicated for ethnic home design by choosing the right color schemes.

Toile. This is a lightweight cotton fabric that is printed with pretty scenic designs. It is particularly common as a table linen but it is also used for window treatments, pillows and upholstery.

Silk dupioni. This is a shimmery womven silk fabric that captures the light and seems to change colors in it. This makes it a very interesting choice for the home. The bedding that we see in this picture is made from this material.

Calico/ Chintz. Calico is a printed cotton fabric that has a repeating design (usually of small flowers). Chintz is a type of calico that tends to incorporate bright colors. The drapes that we see here are a great example of chintz fabric in the home.

Brocade. This fabric is very similar to damask with the main difference being that the brocade material is not reversible. Never underestimate the power of the raised texture design of either of these great materials.

Damask. I love the beauty of this monochromatic or two-toned raised reversible fabric design so much that I recently did an entire ideabook on it here on Houzz.

Shantung. Furniture World Magazine describes this material as "a medium to heavy weight, plain-weave silk fabric with an unevenly ribbed or rough surface and a crisp texture". We see it here on the pillows.

Chenille. This is a soft velvet-like yarn. It is typically used for upholstery, tassels and rugs. It adds a lovely romantic texture to the room.

Matelasse. This is a beautiful heavy weight fabric that is woven to have a quilted look. It is commonly used for bedding and drapery. The heaviness can be offset by choosing a white or light color as we see here.
