Have to agree with TAG and Lindel - local talent and personal touch beat 'cookie cutter art'. There are custom tile printers offering the durability you need with the art and photos which make your kitchen (or bath) unique and personalized.

That pegboard backsplash is so ugly and yucky, I cannot get around why would anyone do that. I am already envisioning insects coming inside the house through the many holes. Really yucky.

We wanted to be able to have spices readily available and save space in our limited cabinet storage. We had planned on tiling the backsplash integrated with strips of steel, but found someone who painted backsplashes. It was a perfect solution to our desires. We love it!!!

The tiles are washable with typical household non-abrasive cleansers, including those containing bleach. We also produce kitchen backsplashes with client-selected pictures and artwork.

My thing is, don't all of these rooms seem a little dated?! They don't seem to be displaying any trends in kids rooms today. Beside, like any have said it almost too much. Kids change their likes and dislikes so often it would be insane to go this "all out"! I also agree with another comment is this seems more for the delight of the adult and borderline "shoving it down a kids throat. Just my opinion and isn't that what this comments section is for?!

When my girls were little, I painted a garden mural on two walls with their bunk beds incorporated into it by making the supports and guard rails into posts and fences with vines weaving through them. In the boys' room I painted a mural of a train trestle/mountain scene and my husband mounted a model train track on a door which was on hinges and could be hooked flat against the wall. When set in the open position, the mural was the backdrop landscape for the train set. Their bureau I covered in Thomas the Tank Engine characters. It was fun to create, they had fun for years, and when they got older, they repainted the rooms themselves. The girls, by the way, chose neon pink walls, a black floor and white ceiling with black and white checkered curtains and a pink shag area rug. It was bright (!) but awfully cute and their own design and creation. Oh - and their friends without exception admired their rooms and had fun in them.

Funny how we don't think it strange to go "all out" for a dinner party lasting one night, or Christmas, lasting a few weeks or less... Children are with us for such a short time in the scheme of things, that making the extra effort to give them a special space and special memories seems like a no brainer to me.

An amateur photographer displays a collection in the kitchen with his custom printed tile backsplash. And a hospital ward 'warms the atmosphere' with family-friendly art in the hallway.

Nice article Laura! There's such a great emotional connection with portraits, especially those of people you love.

Portraits are my absolute favorite to create! Of course I like most figurative works in general, but I particularly enjoy the intimacy of a portrait.
