Every year in august we have the 'night of the shooting stars' My husband and I and our four kids bought out the old matresses and sleeping bags, stocked up with chocolate bars and turned out all the house lights. As we live in the countryside it was pitch black with only nature as our background noise. We began counting the shooting stars we saw, told stories, laughed alot and eventually one by one we fell asleep.

I went with a dark laminate floor throughout my home because my dogs' nails and hardwood just wouldn't mix. I do keep my wall colors lighter here than in any other home I have had -- that makes the most difference in the feel of the room to me. I detest white walls......reminds me of a sanitarium or a hospital.

You guys are going to laugh, but the best way I have found to keep my floors streak-free and paw-print-free is with a bath towel, my own 2 feet, and a squirt bottle of plain water (cleaners tend to leave streak marks, so I avoid them). I literally spray a little water on the floor, and wipe it clean with the towel that is under my feet. Hubby laughs at me buffing the floor with my feet, but this is so easy to do every couple of days. I use steam to kill germs, again only using plain water in the steamer.

I also have a flat buffer (similar to a mop) that I toss a microfiber rag under, but I am using it mostly for dry dusting now -- it is especially good to get under the beds and under furniture. I can keep changing out the rags as they fill up with dust.

Thank you all for the sources on unglazed tiles. We did intend for the tile painting to happen at one of our parties and think they will all have a blast doing it.

elizabethjacka, I have had ceramic tile counters and backsplashes for about 10 years and have found that if the grout starts to look a little dark, just spray with Clorox clean-up or any product with bleach. Let it sit for however long it takes then go over it with a stiff brush. It whitens right back up with very little effort. Around the sink was where I had to do this the most. It was rare for the rest to ever need more than just a wipe with a damp dishcloth. I loved my ceramic tiles because they really brightened up the kitchen.

That pegboard backsplash is so ugly and yucky, I cannot get around why would anyone do that. I am already envisioning insects coming inside the house through the many holes. Really yucky.

I reread the article to make sure I didn't miss anything about reusing the old kitchen cabinets because the layout and style are completely different in the before and afters. It just said that she did the painting and distressing herself so think the cabinets are new. Maybe the author could clarify that point.
