@Sharon Miller: I grew up in a house that was barely 1100 square feet that had 3 modest bedrooms, 1 bath, an eat-in kitchen, dining room, living room, and a basement with a workshop, canning and freezer space, and laundry area with a shower. It startles people today when I tell them that our parents raised 6 kids there. Yep, 8 people in that house before the older ones started heading off to college. It can be done...and happily.

So I am a mite bit confused. Some of the "small" homes are occupied by 1 or two people and if you average the square footage per person they have about 500 feet each. How is that small? I am one of 6 people (and two cats) living in 1000 sq ft twin house. That's around 166 feet per person. We also have a small backyard (20x100 feet) Myself, Hubby, Grammama, and the three little ones (8, 6 and 4) are quite content to be living in a "small" home. True we see each other all the time, but on the high side, we see each other all the time. We often have people over for parties. The kids constantly have friends over. There are two bathrooms, but one is technically Grammama's. So essentially we have 5 people sharing one bathroom. We make it work. I love that I can look around and see my kids doing homework, my youngest reading on the couch and hubby making dinner without getting up. (no I'm not fantasizing, my four year does read and my hubby makes most of the meals :)

Now here is the fun part, all of my friends have similiar size houses, with similiar family sizes. None of us see our houses as small but according to the mc'mansions going up across the country we are tiny.

I'll take my tiny home with it's crowded porch and loud dinners thanks ;)
